One of my favorite shots in the movie is right after Casita falls apart. When Mirabel is covered in dust, she looks like she did in the vision. That might be obvious, but it gives me chills every time.

Just a thought. The fact that mirabel was still sleeping in the nursery shows her childlike-out of the box thinking. When everyone enforces the thought that being in the nursery is a bad thing, it’s actually the thing that saves her and Casita. Once a person has their powers, Abuela pretty much pigeonholes that person. Making their existence their power. They are not allowed to have a life of their own. Because mirabel is “safe” from this burden she was able to see things from a different perspective and use the gift she DID receive. She received the gift of freedom and the opportunity to think for herself. Bruno tried to do this by living in the walls. But because this didn’t fit “his role” abuela pressured him into, he only felt loneliness and separation. Casita is the foundation and protection for the family. Mirabel is the foundation and protection for the family. Had she received a “door”, she wouldn’t have had the opportunity to bond with casita on the level she did. Much like her cousin who can talk to animals, mirabel could talk to casita. That is why she received her vision of the house cracking. I believe Mirabel not only grounded her family but humbled them too. She made them relatable to the villagers. While everyone had god-like powers she did not. She made the family more approachable. Lbh, Abuela has RBF, and that is not your best spokes person. Mirabel was known for smiling and singing, having fun.

I saw many people headcanon that before Mirabel's ceremony went "bad," Abuela's favorite grandchild was Mirabel due to her being the youngest and taking after Julieta the most, who was also Abuela's most favored child.

I feel like something I don't see talked about enough is how bad Luisa's technique for lifting would actually be: she doesn't have to exert ANY effort to lift obscenely strong things, and when her power fails, she is still treated like the pack...uh...donkey?, and she would never have had to worry about lifting before. She would have hurt herself pretty badly. (That said, I freaking love Luisa, and I love that she gets her powers back and then immediately has her baby primo basically ground her, like nah, take five fam. XD)

Interesting thought. But I think she does need to exert effort. She is seen working out/training several times. And Isabella says "You're so strong" when they've already lost their powers, which means she actually is really strong even as a "regular" person.

I dunno if she can turn off her powers or not, but it seems like she does need to exert effort though. She has the muscles to show signs of strength and resistance training, and even when she did not have her powers anymore, we see her being able to move a piano all on her own. I cannot say about her lifting techniques though. I am no weight lifter so.....

@@LieutenantByrd At the beginning and end of the movie, when they show what happened to Abuelo, you can see that mountains of the Encanto formed between the river, cutting it out of the Encanto. But at the end of the movie, Mirabel and Abuela go to the river. During Surface Pressure, Luisa says "I move mountains, I move churches" While she's literally moving a church. So I think it shows that she's not just sensationalizing her powers by saying she can move a mountain, but that she literally can and has moved a mountain. I guess it's possible that it's just a different river in the Encanto, but I personally don't think so

@Lauryn I believe it's the Encanto that does that, and I think they ha e a vid about it. The mountain pops up to protect the village (they don't seem to have any contact with the rest of Columbia) but the mountain breaks when the miracle breaks. When the magic comes back, the mountain stays broken as a sign that they've changed and no longer need to be protected in the same way.

One of my favourite theories about this movie is that Dominic Toretto (main character from fast and furious movies) is a long descendent of the Madrigal's and his gift is "family" which makes him immortal so long as he has family.

I feel like the people that would die because casita wasn't able to protect them would be: Mirabel, Isabella and Camlio because they are the only ones actively trying to save the candle, everyone else is just trying to protect each other.

The way this theory plays out feels more like a Ghibli or Makoto Shinkai anime than a Disney movie. In that case, I highly suggest you see “In this corner of the world.” They are not the same story, but some of the sentiments in the third act resemble this scenario.

I feel like Pedro had powers and that’s why they were chasing them. Also I think that’s why he decided to sacrifice himself to save everyone else. They never even found his body or had a funeral for him.

What If Mirabel touched Antonio's doorknob? Set-Up: Mirabel walks to Antonio's door, just like in the movie. However instead of Antonio touching his doorknob and getting his gift of speaking to animals, he grabs Mirabel's hand and puts it on his doorknob. "I would rather risk losing my gift, so Mirabel could have another chance getting one of her own than have her go another day without one." What would happen then?

I actually got emotional during this video. Very well done! I think this is one of my favorite videos of yours now. A part of me wishes this is how the movie actually went. It's heart breaking, but so meaningful. And would rival, or even top, some of the most tear jerking moments of Pixar.

Encanto 2, mirabells start hearing voices and seeing old ghost of her family, she thinks she turns crazy and runs away, rest of family start to look for her. insert plots of intrest. due to plot mirabel starts to realise that it´s her power awakening beeing able to comunicate with family spirits and realice pedro is the spirit of the house. rest of family is splitting once again due they cant find mirabell until in a hectic event, she pops up to rescue the spliting family once again with help of the spirits of family. That could be a fast easy pitch for the sequel. ed. should be bit more bruno beeing one main plot to start searching for mirabel. ( or both bruno and mirabell is running away making rest trying to find both.) Mira is still a main char.

Abuala talks to Pedro like he is still there because the town are all catholics. The priest makes several appearances in the movie, including when his church is moved. Catholics believe in eternal life and that you can ask those who have pased to liason with God for you.

Yeah I thought the same when he brought that up, I don't think she's talking to Pedro because she thinks he's the house, I think she was literally just talking to his spirit in the afterlife, because they'd most likely be religious and believe his soul lived on and is in heaven watching over them.

The way I see it is Pedro is the Candle, and Casita(I don't know the spelling) is more like a sibling to Pepa, Julieta, and Bruno, born from the Candle(Pedro) to protect and shelter, because a new town would need shelter too, and I don't think Pedro is Casita because it's a feminine form of house, if they called it Casito, then sure, but that's not the case

One question that came up for me during this video is this: What's purpose of Camillo's shapeshifting and Antonio's communication with jungle animals (at least at the point when he gets the ability). The communication with jungle animals would've made sense in an older character, like Camillo or Mirabel, as a useful ability to have in the town because it could've still been dangerous to venture in for food but by the time Antonio gets his gift the town seems pretty settled and safe, they have ample access to food or else they wouldn't have nearly as many donkeys as they have people. And Camillo's gift has no application in defence or advancment of the town. However, both their gifts would suit well in espionage and in breaking down enemy defences. But I feel like the miracle/Pedro (who just wants his family safe) wouldn't be overly interested interested in actively undermining the military on the other side of the magical mountains across a river that his family is safe from

I had a similar what if kind of thought a while ago, but not 'what if mirabel died' but 'what if she'd kept going' when she ran away to the place where Pedro died, what if she had managed to get out and just kept going - so there would be a chance her family could follow her and bring her back. A lot of the same emotional problems you noted here would come up but with the silver lining that Mirabel is still there for them to apologize to lol.

The butterflies in Encanto remind me of the butterflies in Bambi 2. In Encanto the yellow/golden butterfly is at the end of Encanto where Mirabel and Abuela reconcile, and Bambi 2 has them when Bambi dreams about his mother. Both films have a yellow/golden butterfly(s). Abuela, Mirabel, and Bambi all make peace with their losses and change for the best, no longer tied to their trauma. I like the repeating symbolism of the yellow butterflies. (Idk if other films/shorts/etc have them or not).

I know that the war is based off of an actual war but in movie, I think it was different. Why would Pedro believe that sacrificing himself would stop the soldiers? The only reason I can think of is that the soldiers were after him. My theory is that Pedro had some sort of magic or something that the soldiers wanted to destroy. When he was killed, the magic connected back to his wife and children.

I feel like that would have been a great act three for the movie. If they had more money and time that would have been Amazing. Of course it would be sad Mirabel died but we have scene Bambi’s mom die and several other characters die. I just feel Abuela needs to feel that kind of guilt. I also can see the scene with Julietta yelling at Abuela clearly in my mind.

I mean...I love that you have such an optimistic outlook on the scenario, but honestly I think if Mirabel died during Casita's fall, that would be the absolute straw for Bruno. Guy spent TEN YEARS hidden away in order to give his niece a somewhat normal life. If that was all in vain...I honestly think he would be the first to break. And I wouldn't blame him. Would it break the family forever? No...I don't think it really will, but it would take a long time. I've read some canon extending fics where the author allows Bruno to finish what he was starting to say to Alma at the river (often at Alma's own request) and it's always extremely cathartic.

There's a bit of pushback from some very good fanfic writers against some other writers who will either a. infantalise Bruno to the point that he can't function at all or b. make him act like a complete saint. He's neither, he's a complex character with both good and bad traits, and I just don't believe he would be instantly ready to forgive his family, specifically Alma, if Mirabel got killed.

What if Bruno hadn’t left? This could happen two ways - either he doesn’t let his mother convince him to ask why Mirabel didn’t get a gift, or he just doesn’t leave after that vision. Does he try to hide it? Lie? Break it and throw away the pieces? How does he treat Mirabel?

My only problem with this is that in the story as originally presented, casita comes back to life anyway, which to me means that Pedro was able to still live on, so in your scrnario, with Mirabel as casita, what becomes of Pedro? And why does Mirabel's mom get to be the keeper of the magic *and* have her own gift? But I do like some of your other insigts and thoughts on this, and how it plays into the themes of the movie

I've got a what-if scenario for you... What if Marlin died from the barracuda attack in Finding Nemo? Coral was the laid-back parent, but after Marlin's death, would she act the same way Marlin does in the main story? Given the Catholic influences that Encanto draws on, I would say that Pedro can't *be* Casita, but perhaps could be given the ability miraculously to be able to work through Casita from the afterlife (presumably Heaven).

I've never liked the idea of Pedro being casita mostly because that means he'd have to watch his wife, children and granchildren and every one of his descendants die. I feel like there's only so long before a spirit loses its identity, and eventually Pedro would forget who he is, and simply become a nameless living house, and I find that sad as well.

Nice. Abuela becomes a murderer! But... Pedro would likely still be there to support his daughter and rest of the family so... What about "twin" casitas? Because the new casita would have 2 souls (Pedro and Mirabel) so eventually it could grow and divide so each soul control 1 casita.

I doubt that would end well if that happened Isabella doesn't want to marry Mariano so if they did resentment would build up for years without being talked about and Delores would be suffering every day unless she moves on which I doubt.
