When it comes to Quirrell trying to kill Harry physically, I always thought it was because he knew that Voldemort was struck down when he used magic to attack Harry as a baby. Maybe he was just scared he’d be destroyed too.

I think the being able to physically touch harry thing was more about proving that he is stronger than love, considering dumbledore always rubs it in voldemort's face that he doesn't understand it / its strength

Yeah, this is the one. Voldemort places a lot of importance on the "arcane" aspect of magic and he always has. He's not making salt grain horcruxes and sealing them under the ocean, he's not using physical means to immediately kill Harry without chance of repercussion (just drop the baby, dude), he's not content with an arbitrary amount of horcruxes; All of this adds up to his horcrux plan being found out, the identity of the horcruxes becoming apparent and essentially every defeat he ever suffered to be at the hands of his own hubris. If Voldemort was more logical, he'd have easily killed Harry and conquered Britain, before getting squashed by the rest of the world, as the real life events that inspired his faction have been squashed.

Personally I've always thought Voldemort's plan was to be resurrected, unalive Harry, then use the portkey to transport himself, his followers, and Harry's dead body back to the start of the maze where he would announce his triumphant return by taking out as many important professors and ministry officials as possible. I could see Voldemort doing this bc he does something similar in deathly hallows after taking Harry's "dead" body back to Hogwarts to gloat about his victory. Plus, he still has barty crouch Jr disguised as Mad Eye amongst the crowd. He'd be an excellent candidate to hit Dumbledore or the minister of magic with a death curse since his cover hadn't yet been blown. Though I do really like the idea of Voldemort disguising himself as Harry to infiltrate Hogwarts. It feels like something he'd do

You should watch supercarlin video about what the plan would have been if voldemort managed to kill Harry in the graveyard. It is a great theory. They surmise that they would have had worm tail take polyjuice potion to look like Harry and send him back via porky because he has a lot of knowledge of Harry and his friends from his time as Ron's rat Scabbers. I do not think that voldemort and his death eaters would have taken the porkyback because because in the 2nd book one of the advantages Voldemort has is that nobody believes he is back. Also I do not believe Voldemort would go back to where he knows Dumbledore and a bunch of very capable professors, witches and wizards would be and because he is afraid of Dumbledore and he knows Dumbledore could defeat him in a duel.

doubtful tho, none of the returning death eaters were even prepared to do such a thing, they literally just learned he was alive, and show up while being skeptical. they def werent in a battle ready state of being. voldy is smarter than that to throw unprepared people into a fight, not to mention even voldy wasnt sure how many were still loyal

@@lesliebrown5721 See now that makes more sense. Worm tail would be ideal since he's spent several years learning about the trio. As cunning as Voldemort is, I think he'd have a tough time blending in around ron and Hermione long enough to take out Dumbledore. Frankly I think Dumbledore would see through his disguise. With worm tail posing as Harry, Voldemort could continue gathering Intel whilst also rebuilding his forces behind the scenes as he does in order of the Phoenix. Yeah this one makes the most sense

I thought Voldemort couldn’t harm Harry at all because of his mother’s protection, that’s why the Avada Kedavra rebounded when he used it on Harry as a baby. That’s why he went through all the trouble of getting his blood, not just so he could physically touch him. Which means he wouldn’t just go through with his plan using Cedric instead of Harry because he still needs to be able to kill Harry which he wouldn’t be able to do if he didn’t use Harry’s blood to come back.

personally I always thought that the Cup was a portkey but normally meant for the winner to appear in front of the maze and then the teachers and other adults involved would go and get the other Champions out of the maze. So maybe Crouch jr. just put a second portkey spell onto the object and the newer one triggers first? Also in the book (I just started it again yesterday) Wormtail asks Voldemort at the beginning to use another person than Harry, saying that he thinks that it would work with anyone but of course Voldi wants to kill 2 birds with one resurrection potion

I always assumed if anyone other than Harry touched the cup (on their own) that the cup would have take them to the audience & the only reason it took Harry & Cedric to the graveyard was because it was spelled to take Harry there. As in it was Harry’s touch that sent them there. No Harry no graveyard?

Voldemort referred to Cedric as "the spare" when he and Harry showed up in the graveyard, so the Portkey was probably for anyone who touched it- Harry would be ideal, but not essential.

I mean I wasn't even questioning why the portkey got Harry back: The apparitions reactivated it. The whole graveyard scene happens in some sort of "priori incantatem" thing, so while neither of them casted the original portus spell, the apparitions clearly have some autonomy and so they "reversed" the portus spell, allowing the key to work backwards.

Isn't it pretty obvious that voldemort didn't want to risk casting anything on harry without breaking the protection first? last time he tried to avada kedabra him with the protection on he got kinda rekt. which also means if he doesn't use harry's blood he can't touch him at all and has to plot another potter transfusion lol

I'm not going to lie... I love Cedric. I dont have an explanation, I just love Cedric (for anyone thinking "you like Cedric because he is Edward Cullen" you are wrong, I like Edward Cullen becuase he's Cedric Diggory). I love the idea that Cedric is just unfailingly kind BUT he is a hufflepuff ("that's the point" you say. No it isnt). Hufflepuffs are kind and patient and LOYAL. That word is extremely important. Loyal might as well mean, will defend the people they care about no matter what it takes. Giving voldemort his blood would not be defending the people he cares about, it would be putting them in danger. Don't cross a hufflepuff, or more accurately, don't cross a friend of a hufflepuff, you will greatly regret it. (If you like a metaphor, her you go: Hufflepuffs are stereotypically kind Canadians, but you get on their bad side they become Canadian Geese.)

I'm not convinced he ever would have used Cedric. He needed an enemy, he wasn't short of them (just as he wasn't short of murders to create the horcrux). He'd have tried again for potter maybe using Cedric as bait... Wormtail could even appear without Voldemort presenting it as a failed attempt on Harry before sending Cedric back.

I always loved the theory that it was actually Wormtail that would take the polyjuice potion and come back as "Harry". He spent 3 years living with Ron and Harry and could easily pose as him for the remainder of the school year etc, get close to Dumbledore, while keeping Voldemorts return secret

I think the Lovecrux idea is the thing that makes me more angry than anything else in Harry Potter; it's just so needlessly complicated. It would've made so much more sense if the 'accidental horcrux' situation just gave Harry a one time immunity to Avada Kedavra, because the curse would be expended on the Horcrux, rather than on Harry. I suppose that would require a slight change in the rules about souls, specifically that you should need one to be alive, and AK should kill you by destroying your soul, explaining why it leaves no physical trace.

I always like to think that the fact that Harry owns all 3 Deathly Hallows at this point also helps. Otherwise why would Dumbledore put him on the quest to find the Hallows if they don't work as Hallows vs horcruxes?

I think the whole 'alive without a soul' thing is neat, but the reason Harry survives AK is needlessly overcomplicated. If souls were required to be alive, it would make everything a lot more simple.

I asked the opposite of this question literally yesterday, asking "2) what would have happened if Cedric tricked Harry into picking up the cup by himself" or something along that line Edit: bonus Idea; What if the Dursleys were FORCED to attend the tri-wizard events (perhaps by dumbledore, or under threat by Notorious Seriel Killer, Godfather Sirius)

Even though Cedric is the person he is, it was a close call in many ways. Harry could've taken a little longer or Cedric a little shorter to get through the maze, and they wouldn't have faced each other at the end.

I actually love this theory, but honestly idk if voldemort would willingly use polyjuice like that. Tom's most fatal flaw is that he is set on being different / better than everyone else. On the same vain idk if he would willingly use cedric's wand without absolute need to. Even when he needed a different wand to kill harry he kept and used his own because of his obsession with collecting valuble objects and things he has attachments to. I think he would have wanted to use his own wand to kill harry and albus

To add to this, i still think ultimately he would win, but for a different reason. I feel he would use his own wand against harry and learn the same thing as before but quicker. This would also be bad for harry because without albus he would never learn about the holcruxes and would have no way to beat him.

I don't think the graveyard is completely out of play if Harry doesn't tuch the cup at all. I believe that Bartty is smart enough to make sure that the cup only works tike it does when Harry grabs it.

I doubt Harry would be sitting there for who knows how long after he sees Cedric disappear after touching the cup. He'd probably send red sparks up at some point in order to get taken back. After which they all would probably proceed to brainstorm ideas of possibilities of what just happened while Voldemort and Wormtail do their ritual in the graveyard.

We all seem to be forgetting crouch disguised as moody, who has his eye to see what is going on inside the maze. He will know immediately that cedric and the cup vanished, and have time to formulate a plan before Harry sends up the red sparks. On top of that, fake moody will probably be the one to retrieve Harry when he sends those red sparks ... and execute the plan At a minimum, fake moody might have a backup portkey to the graveyard, and he will send Harry on his way

Then they'd have deemed the plan a failure and just used Cedric instead then killed him! He'd have been missing, Harry would have sent up red sparks to be rescued assuming the Port Key had taken Cedric to outside the maze then been surprised when he wasn't there meaning people would search for him and find he wasn't in the maze but would probably never find out what happened to him!

I understand you wanna end up on a positive note, but I personally think that Cedric being a fierce and loyal friend would trust Harry. So Harry would have been able to trick him into grabbing the cup first by doing a fake out. So the scenario isn't Really that far off. I think the real question is if Voldemort would even come back at all if Harry didn't get teleported to the graveyard. Because he sounds like he's Really intent on using Harry's blood specifically. Voldemort has so many enemies. He could have also just had Wormtail break into some random guy's house. Have Wormtail say: 'Hi! I'm here in the name of lord Voldemort!' before killing the guy's wife and kids. Then that random guy would definitely qualify as An enemy. And then Wormtail could just use his blood! If it weren't for Harry, the plan had no Point. So I could see a scenario where Voldemort just has Wormtail erase Cedric's memory of the graveyard entirely before sending the boy back and getting started on a new plan! Maybe he'd Grab some of Cedric's hair to do the polyjuice potion except that he already has Barry Crouch Junior at Hogwarts who's one avada kedavra away from killing Dumbledore and Harry anyway! I love these what if stories. They're always entertaining and well-thought out. I just personally think that not a lot would have particularly changed in this particular hypothetical scenario.

As much as I adore your What if...? videos, I'm utterly unconvinced with this one. In my opinion, you're taking the "I couldn't touch him" line, too literally. I feel it was supposed to mean that Voldemort couldn't even touch Harry, leave alone harm him in any way. Why would you assume that Lily's sacrifice would've only worked once? In my opinion, as soon as Ceric-mort tries to use Avada Kedavra on Harry, he gets vaporized just like it happened the first time. And knowing this, he insisted on using Harry's blood so that he could break through the defences of Lily's sacrifice. Harry would've still possessed the power that Voldemort knew not. Could that mean that Voldemort ultimately had no way to defeat Harry by his own means? Possibly. But Harry needed to believe that he could be killed by Voldemort to allow his own sacrifice in the Forbidden Forest. But this also means that if Voldemort didn't rely so much on the prophecy and chose another wizard's blood to revive himself and then had a Death Eater kill Harry, that would probably have a chance of working, but like Dumbledore had said "he wouldn't have been Voldemort"

Thank You! I don’t know where they got the idea that Lily’s protection was confined to protecting him from physical touch. Sure Voldemort said “I can touch you now” but that was never meant to imply that Voldemort was only prevented from touching Harry. The protection stopping Voldemort’s Avada Kedavra when Harry was a baby is literally the catalyst of the whole story.

Yes, remember Voldermort used Avada Kedavra against Harry as a baby AFTER killing Lily. They were not hit by the same spell at once.

Because no one with lilys blood would be present. Remember in the original books harry was only safe due to petunias presence at privet drive. If petunia wasnt what was keeping him safe then he wouldnt have had to have gone to privet drive to begin with.

Pretty sure Dumbledore doesn't have the authority to choose who raises Harry so in the hypothetical scenario that Dumbledore doesn't give Harry to the Dursleys than Harry would have likely been raised by the Malfoys because they are "good upstanding citizens", Purebloods and close to the minister (Fudge) but let's say that didn't happen let's say Harry ended up with the Weasleys for example well would Harry be protected by Death Eaters? No we see evidence of this with Neville's parents who despite being in hiding and having strong wards around their house were still tortured to the point where their minds retreated and didn't recognize their son anymore.

Interesting idea about polyjuice. I always figured the plan was for Voldemort and the Death Eaters to ride the portkey to Hogwarts with Harry's corpse. Crouch Jr. would shoot Dumbledore in the back while the others start fighting, killing Fudge and leaving the wizarding world in chaos.

Harry would have living parents. Harry would grow up under James and Lily in a loving household and either be a great child or the biggest bully you’d ever meet. I like to think that maybe if Harry was a bully, he’d 100% bully Neville. He’d totally be the new Draco😂

I think its more likely that the port key worked for the way back is because its twice enchanted, the original "bring the winner back to the start of the maze" and the graveyard port which was put "on top"

totally agreed on all the foreshadowing in Goblet of Fire--i reread it for the first time earlier this year and loved seeing all the hints to what was going to happen later. there was even the bit about Harry and Draco getting into a fight and their spells bounce off each other foreshadowing the fight with Voldemort at the end.

12:50 I read a fanfic once where it was still Harry in the graveyard, but he was a bit more lucid at the time, and as soon as Wormtail said “Blood of the enemy, forcibly taken”, Harry said “You can have my blood! Take it!”, and as such Voldemort came back much weaker from the messed-up ritual.

We've seen "forbidden transport" turned off in only certain parts of the grounds before already. It's not really out of the question that a similar rule was made for the portkey and Barty fiddled with not just the place the portkey brings you, but also the extent to which that boundary was removed. Of course we'd need more theoretical knowledge on how portkeys work, because the only other instant transmission type transport had someone specifically state that you shouldn't try to get out of it, but what can you do. With Dumbledore's special skill to detect and realize magic, being suspicious of Barty Sr. to the point where he checks the pensieve and having students run through a place where no one can see them (great spectator event, btw), there is no conceivable way a substantial breach of Hogwarts grounds rules like this would've gone unnoticed by him, though.

The protection Lily gave Harry wasn't just about literally physically touching Harry. As long as it lasted, he couldn't be killed by Voldemort, magically or physically. That's the whole reason why the original killing curse meant for Harry rebounded and Harry became "the boy who lived". It even mentions this in Deathly Hallows when none of Voldemorts charms could stick after Harry died for them and there were no further casualties from the good side. Voldemort wanted Harry's blood because it bypasses the protection spell and puts him in with it and eliminates the barrier between them.

I still don't get why Voldemort's plan even had to involve the tournament at all. I mean, Fake Moody could have just slipped Harry a portkey at any point during that year and propably gotten away with it. I guess style points really matter, especially for evil masterminds.

I’m not sure any of this really makes sense because after he kidnaps Harry, he immediately summons his death eaters to announce his return. And Snape would for sure feel the mark and know that he’s back, and Voldemort already suspects that Snape is on Dumbledore’s side. This was always my problem with the plan anyway. Why would he not assume that Snape would tell Dumbledore the mark has been burned if he already fears one of his group may be gone for good?

The reason why the try wizard cup sent Harry with Cedric's body back to Hogwarts when it was touched a second time is because that was the intended purpose for the champion to be teleported to the area in front of the crowd and judges since whoever touched the cup would win point wise Cedric and Harry were tied for 1st place and the only reason it sent them to the graveyard first was because Barty crouch Jr caused it to go to the graveyard but after someone was sent there then the Second touch cause it's true purpose to happen which is taking the winning champion to the beginning of the maze. Voldemort did not have any hidden plan to go back and pretend to be Harry because the prophecy said only Harry had the power to kill him so why would he bother. Killing Harry would mean he already won

I just realized something while watching the clip at 2:32. This may be more common knowledge than I think but it seems like it was done so subtly and was never actually mentioned in the movie, so who knows, maybe it isn't common knowledge. The scene shows Moody turn around to point the way for Harry with Dumbledore walking by in the background. Albus then shifts his eyes between the two before continuing on his way and it always made me think he suspected something was amiss but I could never figure out what he was thinking. The best I could come up with is he's thinking "Why would Alastor be helping Harry so blatantly?" But now I think Albus probably can't see what Moody is doing so, from his perspective, Moody, a man with a magical eye that can see through solid objects, TURNED AROUND to look at Harry. Why would he do this unless it may not be the real Moody? Knowing Albus, he probably picked up on a few other things that seemed suspect throughout the year and this was just another to add to the pile. Of course, as we all know, the tipping point is what he did right after Harry came back. Again this may be more widely known than I know of but I'd never noticed and it's something interesting to think about

I love your videos!! Do you have a video where you describe who makes the patronus which harry sees in the 3rd book at the lake the first time? And there is one other thing that bothers me. In 5th and 7th book when they fight, why do they not distroy the wands? If they don't wanna kill them that would be a consistent way to make them incapacitated...

I love your what ifs. I'm wondering if you could do some past Potter what ifs (i.e. things before "The Boy Who Lived" chapter in The Sorcerers Stone.) Like these: 1.) What if Merope Gaunt Riddle had survived? Would Tom Marvolo Riddle still become Lord Voldemort? Would he be bad but not a Dark Lord with Horcruxes (perhaps he'd go into the Ministry and become Minister of Magic and implement pro-pureblood, anti-muggle born policies directly instead of using a rogue group like the Death Eaters)? Or would he be good? 2.) What if Arianna Dumbledore hadn't died and Dumbledore and Grindelwald had teamed up for "The Greater Good"? 3.) What if Dumbledore LOST his famous duel with Gelleret Grindelwald? Who would have picked up Tom Riddle from the orphanage? Would Tom Riddle have joined forces with Grindelwald or slowly rose in the UK as a rival? 4.) What if James Potter had been sorted in Slytherin instead of Gryffindor? Would he and Snape still have been enemies? Would he and Lupin, Pettigrew, and Black still have formed the Mauraders (and if, so, would Snape be among their number?)? 5.) What if Severus Snape had been sorted into Gryffindor instead of Slytherin? Would he have married Lily instead of James? Would Voldemort have gotten any bit of the prophecy without him joining the Death Eaters? Would James have bullied him anyway, despite the two being in the same house? 6.) What if Peter Pettigrew had stayed good and not joined Voldemort? 7.) What if Severus Snape had failed to get ANY of the prophecy? Would Harry or Neville still become the Chosen One? And, if so, how would their story have panned out?

The protection on Harry covered any sort of attack/contact from Voldemort, be it physical or magical, that's why the first attempt rebounded. Touching him was just an example of the fact that he could now attack Harry. That's why he so desperately wanted to use Harry's blood, to be able to even use the killing curse. In your scenario, if he came back using Cedric's blood, any attempt to kill Harry would backfire again, even if he used Cedric's wand

Voldemort needs Harry's blood to overcome Lily's protection. Without it Voldemort still loses to Harry, unless the elder wand can overcome her protection on its own.

12:56 about the O negative blood, i imagine that the things that make wizards magical are part of their blood, meaning that if cedric performed a blood transfusion on a muggle, or anything else for that matter, they would temporarily gain magical powers and also have control over cedrics wand id imagine wizards are forbidden from doing this for this exact reason
