Excellent messaging, Greg! For example, the HHAAAHHHH's do such a great job at conveying the emotions that attach to such moments that I had to interrupt the video in the middle for a few seconds in order to take a couple of deep breaths: That's the power of a great teacher. Keep teaching, Greg.

just came home from a ride from my partners back to my place, i ride the same route almost everyday and was feeling good about my skills and the bike (tyres are pretty much done in terms of wear) came into a right hand downhill corner too quick and was pretty much completely off the brakes but managed to get back on and progressively add more pressure and get out of the situation in one piece. just wanted to say thankyou MotoJitsu! been watching your videos for a while now and got myself out of a few hairy instances with your tips and advice :)

The slower you get the more tighter you can turn every mph counts to control your line 🙌 explained really well .

Know that feeling well, even on a scooter or a bicycle. Great advice, as usual. Also, it has been my experience that when a turn sign suggests 25 mph, you could maybe do 40. But when it says 5 mph , you had better be doing 5 or slower!

I'm 78 and was pretty good from age 16 to 45, but then I got away from bikes, until a couple of years ago. I was mostly an off-road guy but on a dual purpose Suzuki to get me to the good places. The corners of street riding is definitely what I forgot most. My normal approach is as you advise here And it can't be over-emphasized if you use both brakes or just the front...it has to be no grabbing.... and if like my current older 350cc it has disc front and drum rear, there is that problem, which only 200 practice curves and miles or running two-lanes helped me regain confidence.. Thanks.

Great video. I stuck with my msf course info for the first 1500km but clearly they should talk about these techniques instead. Thanks for giving sensible info.

Literally just did this the other day. 🤦‍♂️ I made a rookie move and 2as trying to keep up with my little brother, who is on a MUCH smaller MUCH more Agile bike than I am. Ended up turning way to hard, brake brake brake, roll off the throttle just a bit, still ended up wide enough to ride that yellow line and had a car coming. Butthole puckered. Anywho, ride your own rides yall. Just cause buddy takes it at 70, doesn't mean you need to. Take it at 20 if that's where you're comfortable. You do NOT need to keep up with a more experienced rider.

Ha... Yeah, this is the one i could have done with watching before my drop. As I've already commented on another video, your advice saved me from a much more severe incident. I've saved this and I'll rewatch it as soon as i get my rear brake master cylinder repaired. Application and practice, guys.

Nice vid. What about when peg is scraping? Some bikes they are low, mostly on cruisers. Also wet, I was riding in Oregon and nice easy turn but the road was slick and I wasn't in center due to oil on the road. I'm in the turn and the bike sliding to yellow line. I was concerned but kept calm and worked the turn. I didn't hit the brakes harderbut let up on rear brakes a bit thinking the front would have more weight on it, just let the bike react and moved my weight a bit from my trail riding days, shifting ones body helps too. I have been riding since 3rd grade. I like to take that course, who knows I may have habits I can work on. I taught myself so I'm sure there are some. I'm also a pilot and they teach us always keep a learning mindset. Every flight is different even if it doesn't seem that way. One other habit to have is.... When you ride think what if this happens..... If you do that, your mind will recall that when adrenaline is rising during an event. Always say what if this guy pulls out or what if this car doesn't see me, perhaps texting. You think what if.... We do that when flying all the time. Ex Sully. Did you think he just learned that during that emergency event? No, he always said what if we hit birds many times during his take offs. He knew what was around him post take off in NY. He knew the builds and Hudson River. If you watch the movie when they hit he didn't turn away from river, he turned while working issue towards river. Same with bikes, what if.....

I can't see someone having a problem if they are driving at the posted speed limit. Using the speed that the road is engineered for is the smartest practice. The video is good for people who always drive way above the speed limit.

A human can always misjudge a turn. You can't convince me it never happened to you. Given that, its better to have and have practiced your options than just saying your prayers and hanging on.

@Dennis Meulensteen I have been lucky on that one. I once made a last-minute turn off the highway and found the turn was tighter than expected, but the bike did well. I was riding a zl600 cruiser. I put myself in that situation by making a last-minute turn, so I didnt miss a highway exit. No incidents other than what is mentioned, other than what's mentioned . I don't find going into turns fast thrilling.

@INMORTALKING Speed limits are set by Governments who work in coordination with engineers to design roads for vehicles to be controllable on them at said limits. It has to do with the friction between tires and roads. Also, turns are designed to accept a certain speed due to centripetal force. What allows you to turn is the contact force between the tire and the road pushing you in that direction. To make a long story short Governments know what they are doing when they set speed limits. It's never been proven that following the posted speed limit is unsafe. However, there are unsafe people and their unsafe vehicles. Thus, there is a need for a speed limit.

@INMORTALKING There is a science called transportation engineering that takes lots of factors in to consideration. Also, there is always a little more tolerance built in for the unknowns. Its always safer to follow the experts.

Unless you're touching the pegs down, you can still lean the bike over further. Don't target fixate, look for the corner exit, relax, breath !
@OtterMachine
@OtterMachine Жыл бұрын
Yes true it's important to relax and be confident in your motorcycle BUT more lean angle always equals more risk, what if the corner has a bad surface and therefore provides bad traction. Not every rider has high quality tires while doing some spirited riding on the public roads. It's better to know proper braking techniques, so you can safely make it through a corner at a pace you're comfortable with instead of just "lean it more bro"
@alanbrown5593
@alanbrown5593 Жыл бұрын
@@OtterMachine sort of. You shouldn't ride faster than the distance you can see, and safely stop in. The point is, when you find the corner tighter than you anticipated, you usually don't need to "comfort brake" you will still have more lean angle than you think. The normal reasons for running wide on corners can be broken down to the following. Too fast an entry speed Too high a gear Incorrect road position People then tense Target fixate Crash
@patrickmba7638
@patrickmba7638 Жыл бұрын
@Alan Brown Sort of? The SAFER option is to slow the bike to tighten the turn. But if ur go to is to add more lean, more power to u.
@OtterMachine
@OtterMachine Жыл бұрын
@@alanbrown5593 its really situational. I've personally target fixated and gone off the road in a corner a few times in my first year of riding luckily every time I was able to stop the bike before hitting a barrier. Target fixation is a survival reaction one needs to "unlearn" when you start out. I know it can happen to experienced riders but thats where practice comes in and learning to be comfortable at certain speeds and lean angles. Its very scary to have to lean your bike on a "fresh" untouched part of your tire when you never HAD to lean that far before and then have do it not on purpose but because you cannot make a corner, its a bad idea to "lean more" as an emergency maneuver. Practicing new lean angles on purpose can be fun and a learning experience. Going into a corner too hot with incoming traffic on the opposite side and forcing yourself to lean more is dangerous in my opinion, if its a small amount of lean change then its fine but it is situational. Learning to use your brakes properly in lean can save you more times than not. Having more "tools" at your disposal is more important for a rider. In some extreme situations you may not WANT to lean more, then at least your brakes are there for you when you know how to use them.

Once i had a bit uncomfortable entry speed at a turn, couldn brake too hard as the bike already had a lean, so brake pressure keepin lean in mind and counter steered for more lean and tighter turn did it for me. Wondered what was best at that time.

Great video. So if your the pink rider and you keep leaning the bike over won’t it change direction as you increase your lean angle? Assuming you’re just going in a little fast?

I was just thinking about this today. I've seen so many videos of people going in too fast and they almost invariably straighten up and ride into the field or hill or whatever is there. It made me wonder: if the choice is to accept going wide and hope for the best or take the turn and hope you don't low side, which would be better?

Well, that's the whole point of this topic, right? To know there's a better,safer option than the two u mentioned. Which is to use the brake(s) to slow the bike down until u are able to turn the bike.

brain fight for surviving and produce fear. fear produce braking and braking is straight line, crash. only riding 8 on parking lot is way to have fast success. many riders don't trust bike, tires etc. all this combo produce fear from leaning. i crash myself on 1098 because of this. also, riders have wrong when speak about that you only need to ride 100000 miles and that you will have progress. NO. you will spend 100000$ on tires, gas, services and you will touch your brain limit at maybe 35 degree lean. riding 8 on parking lot is THE BEST way to train riding bike. also, many have expensive bike and here is fear from damage. invest in crash cage and ride in relax. when you can all day 55 degree lean angle both left right you are ready for saving situation like this in video.
