My father died from dementia four years ago, in his last days he was bed ridden and was unable to eat even when fed, but the worst part was his eyes; He had stopped blinking regularly simply because his body didn't remember how, and when I saw how dry and lifeless his eyes looked i didn't think of it at the time, but it has haunted me ever since. I just feel so bad for him, all that life only to die in such a horrific, insulting painful way. I just hate existence so much.

im sorry for your loss. but this is exactly why im for assisted suicide. my grandpa is in hospice right now from dementia. i really hope my family understands if i take myself out if i start having symptoms. its a horrible way to die and i think its horrible to force people to live that way if they dont want to. my grandma constantly asked my whole family permission to die and everyone said no except for me. i understand wanting to go from pain so i told her i understand and its up to her if she wants to go. i told her i want her to feel better and if she can achieve that by letting go then i dont blame her. i told her i love you ill see you again you can let go if you want. she died that night. and i dont feel guilty for saying yes bc i know shes at peace now.

In USA, you can create a living will that specifies conditions to stop treating you. You can say that if you're not able to feed yourself, the doctors aren't allowed to feed you or hydrate you. I really need to put off making my living will, because you never know when an accident can take away your ability to make this decision in advance of losing your ability to communicate.

If you’re going to lie, don’t do it on the video where people go to fact check you. According to literally what we just watched, if you kept your eyes open for the full 10 minute video, you’d have risked permanent vision loss, had completely dried out eyes, and would have such searing pain it would send you into shock. You claim to not even have had bloodshot eyes at the end of it? Seriously dude?

As an Opthalmic Surgical Assistant for the last 22 years, this is all true and even goes deeper than this video. the tear film is made up of water, mucous, and specialized "globulet" cells that help the tear film adhear to the cornea and the cornea is actually like a pump, it draws moisture amd oxygen in on the surface while the innermost layer helps to pump aqueous out to assist in normal intraocular pressure but also assist in keeping the cornea healthy and clear. The surface cells, also known as epithelial cells are one of the fastest regenerating and healing parts of the body only beaten by the epithelial cells of your tounge. 👁👁👀👀👅👅👍👍😎😎

We have to try and fix eyelids that have been removed, injured, or don’t close all the way. The cornea suffers the most. Sometimes we have to sew the eyelids shut temporarily to save the cornea. Interesting video, 🤔, however, I think the severity of damage that could be caused by not blinking, is greatly underestimated in this video, not blinking for a prolonged period could result in complete destruction of the cornea and conjunctiva, which can pave the way for diseases like trachoma and eventually blindness, or at the very least, cause permanent damage, that would be irreversible, except by surgery.
@dinamosflams

How exactly is it underestimated in the video? It talks about all the horrible damage it would do and says that within a very short time that's irreversible, you'd go blind and probably need your eyes removed to prevent infection spreading to your brain. Not exactly downplaying the consequences there.

Sometimes I wake up with dry eyes. Very annoying and painful. But it has turned out that forcing my eyes open for a minute while looking down will trigger tears and then everything is fine again. While trying to wash my eyes with water in order to make them moist again is much less confortable and painful.

One time, I wanted to see how long I could go without blinking. It hurt for a while, eventually getting so bad that I had to hold my eyes open with my fingers. After a short time of doing that though, the pain completely went away. It felt perfectly normal, like I'd been blinking regularly. Has anyone else experienced that? Is there a reason the pain would go away? I finally closed my eyes when I decided that there was no more challenge to it, cuz by that point, not blinking was super easy. While my eyes were closed they started to sting again as I felt the moisture return to my eyeballs. That makes sense to me. But still, if the pain is supposed to get worse, why'd it go away for me? I can't be the only one, right?

Im confused, Ive read through many comments and only one person claimed to not have blinked for 13 minutes. Nobody had Bells palsy here?? Nobody told me it was thiiis dangerous to not blink. It was crazy uncomfortable, pretty painful actually as I already have sensitive dry eyes. But blind?? I barely blinked for 4 weeks on one eye. At night I had it taped shut, and during the day it was always open although I force shut it a few times now and then, but it didnt help much on the dryness. Even force shutting it, it wouldn’t close completely. But I did try to sleep more as it was exhausting.
