How does a battery management system work in an electric car? Where is it located, what does it consist of and how does it look like?
Roles of the BMS range from keeping the battery safe and healthy by monitoring cell voltages, temperatures and battery pack currents, to predicting State of Charge SOC, EV range and State of Health SOH, to allowing EV charging and disconnecting the battery in case of an emergency.
Learn all the details about the new wireless BMS from Mark Ng, General Manager EV powertrain at Texas Instruments - Live from CES 2023.

Texas Instruments make great chips especially for hobby projects, I especially like their quality for the prices they ask for. I will have to look at TI's battery management system chipsets soon as I have been planning on converting my old Chevy Silverado truck to EV.

Absolutely! We are right now also investigating how we might be able to integrate some TI products into our Jeep conversion - especially on the Junction Box - we noticed some major advantages in some of the products. Stay tuned for that.

@@ElectrifiedVeronika Looking forward to the video that involves those chips as I may have to put together the custom BMS, so of course safety is still the priority.

@@Dr_Mario2007 Absolutely, as you might know in our conversion we are using AEM BMS but this is just the "Cell Supervisor Unit". Then we try to reuse the contactor box from the Mach-E, but especially the pre charge unit and the pyro element peaked our interest at CES!

Thank you Veronika for sharing this insightful video about a battery management system. What I really enjoyed was the simple language and the additional information that you provided during the video. A fun scene was when you needed to crash the demo car to the wall 😂

What a great video, very interesting and informative overview of the BMS. I ddn't know about Matter protocol either - this sounds like gamechanger with V2G. Imagine parking lots with solar panels over the bays, the cars are parked and store the energy and release to the grid - or power your house / flats. I need to get to CES next year...😀

Wow!! Quality 20+ minutes!! Technical yet easier to comprehend! I was curious about their gauging algorithm. Does their SOC algorithm consider the 50% mark of Ah discharged right in the middle of the OCV curve or little less than that? I would like to know if their algorithm is based on SOC based on capacity or SOC based on energy. Also very happy to learn about the smart DC fast chargers to coordinate and work together to fulfill the peak/off peak hours. Very curious about integration of the V2G from a commercialisation aspect. How can EV car users get benefits when they provide energy to the grid.
@ElectrifiedVeronika
@ElectrifiedVeronika Жыл бұрын
A very good question. Actually, the algorithms that run on the BMS are developed either by the BMS developer or by the OEM itself - TI is the supplier and integrator of the system in this case, but the programming and algorithms are responsibility of their customer.

Very insightful. 👌 What are the sampling frequencies and measurement rate in different subsystems in a BMS? This important for amount of the data and to upload to the cloud.
@ElectrifiedVeronika
@ElectrifiedVeronika Жыл бұрын
Thanks! So in a traditional BMS industry standards for voltage and current would be a sampling frequency of 100ms - but they are pushing for 10ms right now. The latter comes with the challenge that the communication bus between the battery monitors must be fast enough and able to handle the bus load. Moving to 10ms also has an impact upon the diagnostic timing interval which is typically around 150ms depending on OEM. Overall, if we want to move towards sending voltages and currents to the cloud, we would envision more preprocessing of data on-board of the BMS to reduce the bandwidth of the data over the cloud - instead of sending all those signals in high sampling frequency. I am really curious to see where all this will take us.

I mean, cute demo but the whole power of their wireless BMS system is that it makes packaging way easier, BMS wiring can be right next to the modules instead of snaking huge harnesses everywhere. It's fantastic for conversions in principle
@ElectrifiedVeronika
@ElectrifiedVeronika Жыл бұрын
Indeed, one of the biggest benefits of wireless BMS is the fact that production is easier. A machine can pick and place the modules without having a technician present to physically connect all modules together. Eliminating those huge harnesses not only increases reliability and saves space, it can also reduce the amount of manual labor required to connect each and every module. Would definitely be a benefit in my conversion too!

@Veronika, have you ever had problems with the BMS on your BEV's where you have sufficient range, then type in an address on the GPS and the BMS then tells you that you have insufficient range? Maybe this only occurs on the BMW i3 (I used to lease one). Very annoying, but I understand the system is taking into account distance, temp, driving style and trying to compensate...
@ElectrifiedVeronika
@ElectrifiedVeronika Жыл бұрын
We definitely have had the case where the predicted range and SOC drop is different to what it turned out to be in the end with our Mach-E as well as the Lightning - of course Don and I always think we are smarter then the computer but we are not always haha. At the point where you type it into the GPS there are so many assumptions regarding driving style, traffic, temp etc. so a little inaccuracy is absolutely okay and it will be updated once you start driving and the system learns again. We had an extremely positive experience with the Tesla when we did a roadtrip in Nevada (video coming soon). We have to distinguish between the SOC prediction of the BMS and then the actual range prediction which goes beyond what the BMS can support but of course uses input from the BMS. Certainly, there are OEMs that do a better job at that than others. I personally do not have experience with BMW. I think the reason Tesla is doing so great at that is that they really make use of all the vehicle data they can possibly get - getting to the point of connected cars and big data algorithms rather than doing everything on-board.
@paulsmith4996
@paulsmith4996 Жыл бұрын
@@ElectrifiedVeronika thanks for the reply. In the end I found that inputting GPS coordinates as Lat / Lon worked better in terms of predicted range. Seems the old BMW idrive system was a bit crap. Like you say, Tesla make use of the data, and so will Texas Instruments with their systems, so we should all see benefits in the long run.
