Yay, I'm inspired to pick these up. With long-running series one often doesn't know where to start for the fear of missing out on previous references. So this comic in four cycles seems like a manageable read. :-) PS. Loving all the new thumbnails.

Oh yes, this is a quick and completely standalone read. And though there are 'sequels', they have more to do with the neighbourhood and different residents over time, so there's absolutely no 'series' feel to any of it. The Bronx in Will Eisner's books is closer to R.K. Narayan's Malgudi than to Metropolis or Gotham City =)

Yes, this is going back a while, naturally, but there's a reason why today the 'Academy Awards of Comics' in the US bear Eisner's name!

me too. I wonder why Eisner's graphic novel was such a big deal. Japanese graphic novels were already a big thing way before 1978. I think Eisner's work about "gremlins" is really interesting.

I jumped here from the latest video, and this video looks so different from the recent ones (a testament to your growing prowess in editing, and camera work (and better equipment ?)). And this video reminds me of the old DD Metro programs or the old news bulletins.

Hahahaha I bet those old TV ads had better focus. I almost feel bad directing people to these videos but at least I still stand by the script (if not the delivery! 😋). Going through my old videos can be embarrassing in many ways, but I think they help me figure out what to improve next (an endless list!)

Woah I feel more smarts after watching this vid. Hey say, why does he got the Disney font as his signature?
@ftloc
@ftloc Ай бұрын
Haha thank you! And that's a great question. Funnily, neither are genuine signatures. The Walt Disney logo was created by an animator, using a brush style. Similarly, Will Eisner's signature by pen or pencil was different, this is how he painted his name, using a brush. The similarity I think comes from cursive in brush for W will need to be loops to not smudge or blot (I think...)

I bought a second hand copy (and a few other comic books) as part of a package for my friend's 12 year old daughter who loves the comics I occasionally send her (she's crazy about EC horror comics and was very taken by Maus). I reread ACWG for the first time in years and was very struck by the content. It has domestic violence, rape, underage sex, suicide and animal cruelty all of which are presented in a frank manner yet the book isn't in any way lurid or "trying to shock". The characters are all very complex people and it could be argued that none of them really come across in a good light (with the possible exception of Benny in the final story). Needless to say, I'm now going to send the copy directly to my friend with a note saying he should read it first and then decide for himself whether he thinks it suitable for his daughter.

Wow, a 12-yer-old reading Maus is pretty impressive. I wonder what your friend will think about giving her _A Contract with God_. I completely agree with you, it's a lot harder and grimier than one perhaps remembers, especially if you only think of the first/ title story when you look back at it. But the honesty with which those things are presented, not to shock, as you say or to scandalize but almost matter of fact is exactly what makes it feel so modern and appreciable even today, not something we can say about most things from decades ago.

@@ftloc Something struck me on this reading concerning the third story "The Super". The super, Mr Scuggs, is German and is widely disliked by the tenants (and he even has a German lugar pistol) and yet it is a ten year old Jewish girl that brings his downfall. I wondered if Will Eisner deliberately made the nationality of Mr Scuffs German to add to the irony of the story.
