NOTE: A few people have pointed out that Tony Montana is Cuban and not necessarily a white character; I should have instead specified that he is played by a white actor.

I just think calling Ariana Grande a gay icon is a bit alienating to gay/bi women because it's gay male culture that's adopted the iconic/diva women. I've noticed that when LGBT are spoken about as a whole there does seem to be a default to men.

Megan Williams Thank you for saying this, this is kind of what I was thinking. Like I know what the basic "gay icon" guidelines are but I wonder why those are there. Does there need to be like completely separate lesbian icons and like bi icons (bicons?) and the queer icons for the whole umbrella? I don't know... language is weird.

@@annalol6128 idk either, but in the wild (aka the internet) I've seen people use both "bicon" and "lesbian icon." Examples include (MCU) Thor, whom several lesbians say is cool/neat and claim he'd be a great wingman to wlw; and Eleanor Shellstrop from The Good Place, because it seems she is canonically bi.

@@mirandabee2323 what I find interesting is that many of the "gay icons" are (perceived) straight women who act dramatically, like Lady Gaga or Madonna, while "lesbian icons" are just that - famous lesbians, like Jodie foster, Tegan and Sara, and more recently names like Kate mckinnon. Other lesbian icons are just women lesbians like, like Gillian Anderson or talk Gadot, but other than Thor (whom I've seen talked about like you say) I've not seen many real men that are seen as "lesbian icons". In my opinion I could see maybe Jeff goldbloom as a lesbian icon but that's a personal thing and I can't think of others 😂

See the trans community has the problem that the majority of our icons are trans, but are mostly transwomen, Laura Jane Grace, Chelsea Manning, Laverne Cox, The Watchowski Sisters. Maybe because society is more obsessed with transwomen, or doesn't understand transmen are a thing. It's really weird.
@happyninja42
@happyninja42 7 жыл бұрын
This is just speculation on my part, but I think, given how most transmen look after therapy, that it's just easier for the cis community to think "Oh, ok yeah that person was obviously a guy all along (even though that might not be biologically true), and they just did the therapy needed to correct the problem" Most people I've met, who were openly transmen, clearly, and definitively looked like the typical cis male would. There weren't a lot of ambiguous physical traits that might confuse the issue as it were. But for some trans women (some), the transition doesn't appear to be as seamless, from a pure cosmetic perspective. And looking at them, people can still think "that's a guy dressed up like a girl". And so it causes some disconnect. Again, not sure if that is the reason, just a theory on my part, but I think that might have something to do with why the trans issue is so one sided. The transmen, are just more easily blended into society, due to the physical characteristics and how they are presented outwardly. Did that make sense? I feel like it rambled a bit in the middle and end, not sure if my point got across as intended.

I think that transwomen, by their very nature. stand out more than transmen. I can't think of a transman (who isn't in porn) who puts themself out in the public eye the way Chelsea or Laverne have.

Robin I think in general, there is more vitriol aimed at trans women, and more dismissiveness towards trans men. From how I see it, a vast majority of people still see trans people as one gender pretending to be another. This makes it a lot easier to draw parallels to traditional male-female dynamics--without transness even being brought into the conversation, there's a parallel with how people are allowed to dress. AFAB people can pretty easily get away with wearing traditionally male clothes, because male is supposed to be the norm, supposed to be superior, supposed to be enviable. AMAB people can still get harassed for it, but it's a lot lesser, and so when people see a trans man they're just like "Okay that's a woman dressed as a man that doesn't mean anything it's normal." And so trans men are dismissed. On the other hand, if AMAB people wear traditionally female clothes, it challenges gender norms a lot more, because for someone who was given the supposedly superior man-slot in life to find something appealing in the supposedly inferior women's side challenges the foundation of the whole gender hierarchy. And so trans women get violently resisted and harassed. Since media thrives on controversy, it's no wonder trans women are more discussed, but I don't think that prevalence is necessarily a bad thing--we need more trans male exposure, yes, but we don't need to reduce trans women's visibility to do so. Anyway, this is all conjecture on a college kid's part, so you can take it with a grain of salt.

I think it has more to do with precedent set in film and literature: there is a long history of women dressing as men to go into battle, or female children being "tomboys" in a lot of very old stories. If you think about it in terms of power dynamics, it's a lot easier to understand why a woman might want to be seen as a man (with a man's historical privileges) than it is to understand why a man might want to be seen as a woman.

Trans man here to give my trans man opinion, but it's a result of how transphobia affects both groups. As the people above me mentioned, trans women are hypervisible in trans discussions because everyone sees them as men dressing as women, and given our super misogynistic culture that's much more confusing and outraging than a woman dressing as a man. The only acceptable time for men to be cross dressing is when they're doing it for a joke, so then you get transmisogyny popping up which targets trans women in specific and makes them more vulnerable to transphobic abuse and violence. Trans men, on the other hand, are often written off as girls pretending to be boys, which still does draw transphobia, but not in the same grand way that being a trans woman does. I think it's inaccurate to say that presenting as masculine when you're AFAB has no repercussions, as it has been criminalized in the US (I don't know if it's since been decriminalized in all states or not), and you see butch lesbians get a lot of flack for being butch, which spills over to trans men too (and something I can testify for). Nonetheless, ridiculing "men who dress like women" happens on a much more public platform than shaming "women who dress like men" because cross-dressing, NB, and trans AMAB folkx are seen as people betraying their assigned male gender, which is heralded as the superior gender, versus AFAB people who do the same because they're just a silly girl who we can bully back into submission on the side. I've seen some people try to claim that people actually want AFAB people to be masculine which is 100% not true, considering how much flack I've gotten for presenting androgynous/borderline masculine for four years now. I find that straight trans men, or the more masculine sorts, don't really seem to make a fuss over trans representation? And that's not really a bad thing, but from those I've run into, they might care about their transness but in a way where they'd want it to be treated like a normal part about them rather than some strong political identity that they want to be celebrated in the media. I, on the other hand, am a gay trans man, so I exist on this rather frustrating intersection where I don't quite fit in with cis gay men and I don't quite fit in with straight trans men, so while I appreciate all the visible trans women in the media, I don't really have any icons of my own. A lot of gay/bi trans men I know (including myself) /love/ David Bowie. I know he's kind of an LGBT icon in general, but all of us are very specifically drawn to Bowie in the late 70s vs Ziggy Stardust (Lodger is my favorite album of his, personally, which is the era I'm talking about). I also find a lot of trans men (including myself) love Fight Club, but not in the same way that cis guys love Fight Club. We're a lot more aware of the sense of fragile masculinity and search for an identity, and also the super homoerotic subtext (or at least the gay trans men are). Tl;dr here is that trans men tend to go for either traditionally cishet male icons, but with a more mature understanding of their gender and sexuality in a way that we find it relatable, or gay/bi trans men are attracted to cis gay/bi men because we would just love to be them/they're relatable as well.

The only celebrity of this generation that's worth of being a Gay Icon is Lady Gaga. Ariana Grande is totally fine and all, but Lady Gaga has helped the LGBT community so much over her career and she's even made a song specifically about us (Born This Way), not to mention the Born This Way Foundation. Also Kylie Minogue is underrated, she's one of my favorites.

I agree with most of what you said but you hit on two things that i feel like you don't go into enough, because they are pretty significant. A) you yourself said that those "gay icons" mostly stem from a time with barely any LGBT representation. But times have changed and we DO have more of that representation now, so i think with that paradigm shift, that definition of gay icon should also change in times of greater visibility. instead of straight people we should uphold famous LGBT people B) You say "canonized by the LGBT community", but later hit on something different: It's NOT the entire LGBT spectrum that mostly defined those icons, but the ones who have the most prevelant voice of that community: white gay cis men (you kind of hinted at that in a side sentence, but then didnt go into tha). those are the people that mostly defined and uphold those icons, but i feel like as we move forward we should consider more of the spectrum when it comes to discussions like this and don't let THEM determine what the entire community canonizes and upholds. This is an important discussion to be had and i like that you talked about it and the way you did it!

Conankun66 agreed the defintion should change. Gaga would be a great gay icon because she's bisexual so she's a part of the LGBT community and she's also very outspoken about LGBT rights.. hires LGBT people and wrote the iconic "born this way". I mean no hate to Arianna but I dont get why would she be a gay icon.

a) yes, he did talk about that point when he said that the young people today dont really know what gay icon means(something that the commenter ساره already discussed in their comment) B) Instead of discussing the points i brought up, you simply discuss if this is "the right place" for this discussion, which is just plain derailing. I am discussing the topic of the video(the concept of the gay icon and how it worked and how it works today/how it could change), you are not.

Has Ariana Grande ever done anything related to gayness? IMO the idea of 'a voice of a generation' is a BS concept in itself, I'm almost 23 years old and she certainly doesn't speak for me, I barely know anything about her. I've never understood the concept of 'gay icons' and after watching this video I think the concept's simply not for me. The reasons for them being iconic based on flamboyance, glamour, drama and loud personalities alone makes it seem reductive and stereotypical to me, it's equally valid as any other other 'way to be gay' so putting them on pedestals as icons above the rest strikes me as wrong, especially if they're not even gay as you point out. If someone asked me to name a gay icon I would name someone like Rebecca Sugar who is herself bi and whose works address the topic of gayness for both young and adult audiences. Then again, I suppose the whole idea of gay culture is something that totally flies by me, if someone asked me how or why it has helped gay acceptance I wouldn't know what to tell them, though I do believe it has. It feels weird to be gay but to also be outside of the gay community and not have much interest in it either. I do like your videos though, they're always interesting!

I feel it's a generational thing. While older (way older) gay men consider Bette Midler, Cher, Liza Minnelli, and Kylie Minogue gay icons, barely anyone from my generation considers those women relevant. Same when it came to the gay generation (gay men in their 70s-90s) before older gay men who loved Judy Garland, Bettie Page, Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford, etc. my generation was more of a pop diva thing. Britney, Christina, Pink, JLO, Lil Kim...and the new kids have a different take on it. I can totally understand them not wanting to canonize Arianna, but would rather choose one themselves. Maybe the idea of a gay icon will change. Who knows, it'll be a male this time? I also feel a gay icon can be a personal thing. Because I never really liked Britney or Christina. Women in rock such as Patti Smith, Janice Joplin, Courtney Love, Stevie Nicks really made me feel...more of myself than a pop princess. Sorry for the long post, just my thoughts :)

Viktor C I think you phrased this perfectly. I'm a straight person, but the majority of my friends have been on the LGBTQ+ spectrum. My grandmother also had many gay male friends when she was younger. The age gap seems to play a huge part in how a gay icon is defined and viewed, as well as who the icons are. I'm 26, and I've got friends in their mid-20s to mid-30s, and even that gap of a decade makes a huge difference. Some of the 30-somethings still see gay icons as people like Cher and Madonna, but also David Bowie, Divine, John Waters, and Freddie Mercury. The younger folks look to people, fictional or otherwise who are either super open about their sexuality or are dealing with it in a way that's relatable to them. My grandmother's friends were all "friends of Dorothy" and very into cabaret, musicals and being flamboyant. Times do change, but history shouldn't be invalidated.

I think Madonna was the last gay icon. Judy and Betty was big, by being contextualy iconic, in the former being married to gay man and the latter being subject to closeted lesbian hollywood bad romance. Straisand and Cher was estheticaly gay, Barbra looks and acts like a good drag queen and Cher sounds like Oscar Wilde would sound and she acts slightly masculin. And than came Madonna, after which EEeeevery female celebrity claims to have this status)) Exception for Celine, she is fabulous. I would rather call Rupaul gay icon of THIS generation, than Ariana Grande

I'm 35, so I was practically glutted with gay icons growing up. Tina Turner, Storm from X-Men, She-Ra, Rita, the original Pink Power Ranger, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Cher, not to mention the wonderful women who came before. The most important thing about a "gay icon", to me, is support. The sense of style they being is half of it, but the rest is their acknowledgement of LGBT+ community -- or at the very least in Rita's case, not hating them any more than they hate everyone else. In the time where there WERE no openly gay role models, or the ones that did exist were walking stereotypes, having someone who wasn't gay acknowledge your existence and worth as a person, someone who even celebrated your sexuality (if only because it kept their carrers alive :p) was a HUGE deal. I don't think these people deserve to be scorned for not being gay. If Ariana Grande supports us, we should support her right back. That said, more cultural icons who are ACTUALLY LGBT+ would also be great. So why not both? There's no sense excluding people.

Even before I knew anything about him as a person, David Bowie has always been an icon to me and most of the people I know who are the same level of obsessed with his persona(s) are other multisexuals (bi-, poly- or pansexuals). Possibly it could have to do with his transformations, going 'back and forth' between pop and counterculture. But if one looks at David Bowie's legacy, it's clearly one journey, not of choosing between pop and underground, but simply veering towards adopting a popular sound in his music, then adopting a more controversial tone; Bowie happened to just like these sounds and didn't feel like he had to pick one in the long run, simply following his (musical) heart. So Rantasmo, please do an episode on David Bowie?

So many of the things and people that I was obsessed with as a kid which either no one else knew/cared about or which I was actively made fun of for liking because they were "uncool" are things that I later discovered were hugely celebrated within the LGBTQ community. Moulin Rouge, Judy Garland, Romy Schneider's Sissi, Oscar Wilde, Xena, Hello Dolly, My Fair Lady.. so many performers and pieces of culture that informed my aesthetic and personal identity but that didn't seem to particularly resonate with anyone else in my immediate world. As I got older, I found kinship with people through shared pop culture obsessions and gradually realized that a lot of the things I had been made to feel embarrassed for liking were not only appreciated but hailed as iconic in the queer community. This realization felt like discovering my people, a tribe that I hadn't know was there all along, caring just as passionately as I did. Thanks for this video.

First of all I love that you're branching out from talking specifically about tv shows/movies - I LOVE the movie videos, don't get me wrong, but it's also cool to just hear your thoughts on things. Second - I tentatively think it might be fair to say that who is and isn't considered a LGBT+ icon should change as the culture changes. Like, maybe these days unless a straight person creates a work which just happens to become massively popular with the LGBT+ community, straight people generally shouldn't be considered gay icons. BUT it's also very important to make sure that the newer generation of LGBT+ people don't forget that the culture WAS different once upon a time, and that just because something isn't kosher now doesn't mean it isn't still relevant, and that it's important to understand and respect its history and the reasons it was more ok back in the day. Interesting topic! Thanks for making the vid!

I've had this question eat at me, whether it makes sense to consider people like Carly Rae Jepsen a "gay icon"-- one of those things that makes sense to me inherently, but I couldn't really explain or justify it. That is actually a good question and made me think so I find it kind of pause worthy that I could not (at least not from the top of my head) say who I would concider an icon. Maybe that one needs a bit more thought or it could be due to the fact that I am a bit outside of what people would describe as "gay culture".

I view many videogame characters as gay icons, Nina Williams, Cammy, Princess Peach, Yuna, Amy Rose and especially prominent for me was Coco Bandicoot! The news of her being fully playable in the N.Sane Trilogy was truly a special moment for me! I think the thing with women in videogames is the fact that they are an accessible and socially acceptable power fantasy for gay boys.

Great video. I (gay trans man) have had a lot of conversations with a lesbian friend trying to puzzle out why so many gay men idolize straight women as our icons. You've made some really interesting points about the entire definition of the term, and I feel like it is one that I can totally agree with, and I don't even feel like this needed to change. If anyone insists on wanting their gay icon to actually be gay, then... fine, but that shouldn't stop others from picking those women as their gay icons. These things are not really set in stone after all. Personal preference and all that

This was really interesting. Other icons that immediately come to my mind are Bernadette Peters and Debbie Reynolds. I wonder if the concept of a gay icon (in the sense that you talk about) will slowly fade because of more gay representation in media. I think something that is appealing about Ariana Grande and other gay icons is that they are straight women who support the gay community. So while certainly not without its issues, but I can see why Ariana would be chosen-it's nice to have allies. I think in that way, Beyonce can also fall into this category. Thanks for making this! -S

Now that you've asked the question, I don't think I ever really paid much attention to celebrities to where I could follow a gay icon. The closest person I could consider a gay icon growing up in the early to mid 2000's is a well known person in the furry community, 2 the Ranting Gryphon. At the time, he used to have a podcast before podcast were a thing where he would read news stories, answer questions from listeners and have some comedy segments, all while offering his colorful and funny commentary. 2 himself is gay and very outspoken about it and was very influential on me becoming comfortable about myself. He's not popular as he used to be, imhp, and doesn't do podcast anymore but he's still around and known.

I'm probably amongst the generation that's asking these questions, but it's always seemed pretty clear to me. Also, as a lesbian, I've noticed that a lot of lesbians feel the same way about some particularly visible men - ones who shirk gender norms, whether behavioral or presentational, in particular. Since being Not Straight is kind of alienating from standard gender norms, finding role models who exemplify the ways you deviate from those norms, even if they're neither your gender or your sexual orientation, is really helpful and healing.

Interesting enough, it's only the "G" in LGBT that accepts icons that aren't them. The other parts of the community say that someone must be , or be able to be read as, them to be an icon. Lesbian - Ellen, Billie Jean King, Sappho Bisexual - Alan Cumming, Lady Gaga, Alexander the Great, Captain Jack Harkness, (and curiously) Sappho Trans - Laverne Cox, the Wachowskis, Sylvia Rivera, Chaz Bono, and Mulan

I would consider artists as gay icon who make songs gay people can relate to. Like david bowie, even if he was a straight guy. Or famous gay actors who have spoke out in public against homophobia like ian mckekke, jacobi, The one actor who played the cool gay villain vampire in true blood. And i would consider the artist mika a gay icon, if he were more famous, he is underated because he didnt sell out his creativity, because he wrote songs about his (obviously gay )expieriences in his love life. He even wrote a song about a bisexual man. He didnt even need to come out in the public. He didnt need to, but he did. Also his music can be compared to freddy mercurys.

Maybe it’s a generational thing. I’m 53. We refer to gay icons as women who are “fabulous” and are often divas who have shown love and support for the gay community. Bette Miller, Judy Garland, Diana Ross, and Barbara Streisand come to mind. The “kids” as we called ourselves love them and they love us back. Maybe it is mostly a gay male thing.

Awesome video! Very thoughtful and informative. Personally, I think it's a little premature to call Ariana a gay icon, only because I think that's a title you have to earn over time. Judy, Liza, Bette - even Kylie didn't get that title immediately. I know I might get flack for this, but that's something that's always bugged me about Lady Gaga - she kind of gave herself the title of gay icon right off the bat. I think Ariana totally could be a gay icon, but let's not rush the process.

I've never really understood the "gay icon" thing. It might be that I'm a trans man and thus haven't gotten the whole "growing up as a gay cis boy" experience that may have caused me to gravitate towards gay icons. Instead, I sought out first glam rock and then goth. The androgyny and dramatics of these things were important to me. There's still a sense of camp in Bauhaus's singer Peter Murphy dancing around on stage wearing makeup and in a mini dress, but it's tinged with darkness; it's the glitter of glam rock but coloured in black. Check out the live video for Rose Garden Funeral Of Sores by Bauhaus if you want some goth homoeroticism and camp.

I know he's kind of mainstream and a touch bland, but NPH was the one of the first positive gay icon for me. My mom bought a People magazine reporting on David Burtka and Neil Patrick Harris's twins was the first real time I'd seen a gay portrayed positively. It gave a bit of hope to me as a deep in the closet trans kid. Later on I'd find out that childhood heroes of mine like Ian McKellen, Lily Tomlin, and Freddie Mercury were all LGBTQ+. I understand and appreciate the concept of the Gay Icon, but I'm a little perplexed at the notion of Ariana Grande being considered one - not because she's straight, but just because I've never known her to have a significant gay following or notable presence in queer culture. Maybe I've just never heard of it (I'm 23, but is Ariana a Thing among queer teenagers now?); most likely that article was written by some out-of-touch fanboy, lol Anyway, my personal Gay Icon, as a lesbian, is Lucy Lawless. A straight woman, but she played the role of badass, ambiguously queer Xena: Warrior princess, and has long been an outspoken LGBT ally.

I am from Mexico and we have some singers or performers that can be considered "Gay Icons". A very famous transexual woman called Libertad, an actress. Her transition was highly covered by the media and was accepted very well by the general public. Gloria Trevi, although she's terribly problematic, she's an ally of the gay community and even one of her songs is clearly an allegory of the struggles of the transexual people. Lorena Herrera, Maribel Guardia, Ninel Conde, cis female singers that had participated of the Pride Parade in Mexico City multiple times, they unapologetically sensual women and also hard workers. Maybe Rocio Durcal and Juan Gabriel (rip) too. There's no so many, tbh, but they have been a constant, now is hard to fin new role models on the media, LGBTQ or cishets, since people don't trust the people behind the TV agencies, that are too religious, so gay actors receive so much backlash on the screen, they produce a lot of soap operas only focused on cishet romance and if there's a gay person is for fun, and more modern singers don't take the ally flag . Lucky for us there's so many places to find new gay icons, not only TV and not only Mexican TV. And maybe the new Gay Icons would be gay or LGBTQ persons too!

I guess, coming from the perspective of a (18 y/o) lesbian, my version of gay icons are (especially when i was younger) men and male characters who were some sort of effeminate/gay and preferably sympathetically evil. They were 'safe' for me to like in the same way that saying i had a crush on the gay guy at school was safe: nothing would ever come of it so I could be obsessed with them without having to deal with the consequences. They also were an outlet for feeling isolated and wronged by the world as well as a way to get close to some sort of gayness/gender non conformity without having to confront it head on if I'd been really into the ambiguously gay female characters. From talking with other lesbians/bi girls, I think this is a pretty common thing

Late to the party as hell, but I think that it's pretty important to consider the difference between gay icons of decades past and the gay icons (tempted to use scare quotes) that have sprung up well after the AIDS crisis. While women like Liza Minnelli and Bette Midler could be, to some degree, considered part of a counter-culture (at least when they started gaining popularity within the gay community), it's hard to say that about the people most often regarded as gay icons nowadays. Associating your artistic career with LGBT's in the 70's and 80's was a sign of bravery - today it's just a fairly standard PR decision. Maybe that's just because I'm a snob, but I feel like calling Ariana Grande a 'gay icon' sounds pretty similar to applying that label to a corporation or a brand. She's an industry product, and a product that's not exactly doing anything risque or groundbreaking.

I don’t always appreciate this aspect of “gay culture “. I feel like it’s something that I’m expected to partake in as a gay man even though it has nothing directly to do with being gay. I feel like a lot of Madonna and Golden Girls are thrust upon me in a lot of queer spaces. I guess I’m uncomfortable with camp culture in that it doesn’t reflect gayness as I experience it. I feel like a lot of the camp and flamboyance of mainstream gay culture is set by a frankly very white dominant culture that grew up idolizing women and correlating gayness with femininity. I think it’s great when men embrace their femininity, but I don’t think it reflects the gay community as a whole. I also find it confusing that gay people can’t idolize other gay people but instead identify more often with straight women. One friend of mine who watches Sailor Moon and mains Palutena in Smash Bros explained that he likes the fantasy of being a fabulous woman getting the attention of men. To me that sounds like being trans? I just feel like my experience is wanting to get the attention of the same gender because I am that gender, not because I fit that binary of attraction.
