I didn't realize the burn time of a hybrid was that close to a secondary. Great info and exactly what I was looking to learn.

that Secondary stove holds a lot more wood than the hybrid. If the same size that Hybrid would be 15-18 hours. That blaze king not lasting 30 hours under normal conditions..

The stove shop near us in northern MN carry the Kuma hybrid stoves. They have a cat in the same location as the Scirocco so the heat generated by the cat is captured in the stove top and not the chimney. I thought I would never own a cat stove until I learned about hybrids.

I have a Kuma. Had one in our old house too. We've been really happy with it. Getting 6-8 hour burn times (from startup to catalytic dropping out of active range) with ponderosa pine. Usually keep our 1280 sqft house at 75 degrees, and have burned just over a cord so far this winter. Way cheaper than a Blaze King, and manufactured just a few hours away from home for me.

My understanding about any type of catalytic combustion wood stove is that you need to initially reach an exhaust temp of a minimum of 500 degrees up towards 1000 degrees before you can switch over to full catalytic mode.(All stove manufactures have different ratings) During the warmer shoulder seasons when we may just want to just take the chill off of the room I do not want to have a wood stove (catalytic stove) that has to start out running at a high temp just to start the operation. We wanted to upgrade our old wood stove to a stove that will burn more efficiently and decided on a hybrid with a secondary and catalytic.

Right at the flue exit seems like an odd place for a CAT. CATs are supposed to work by getting very hot. There doesn't seem to be much heat recovery with the CAT in the flue. Probably doesn't matter where the CAT is if the goal is incinerating PM2.5.

I agree. I think this is a way to pass the new EPA tests and not to achieve more in home efficiency.

@@tinmaninc2023 help me understand the anatomy of the regency hybrid. Yes the cat is at the flu and not where they are traditionally, but will it still provide additional heat bc the blower air has to blow past it?
@tinmaninc2023

@@jon3296 I'm doubtful. As I said above I think it was simply a way to pass an epa test. I think that's great for the environment but no benefit to the home. I would love to see a side by side comparison between both models. I believe that the hybrid due to the placement of the cat will have an increased draft which in turn will draw more heat out of the stove and increase the airflow through the secondary air tubes.

What’s your opinion on the Osburn? Thinking about getting Osburn 2000, same as in video, just smaller.

I think as far as secondary air stoves go they are pretty much like anything else on the market in that price range. The components seem good quality from what you would expect from a company like SBI who makes many brands.

I've had an Osburn insert that is the 2400 model. I put it in 26 years ago and it's still burning great. My only issue with an insert is the needed electric for the fan. If I bought another stove I'd go with an Osburn. But I would have a free standing stove. This way I get heat without electricity

I've heard the 30 hr for the blaze King is exaggerated by far unless you burn it on low and dirty which will clog the cat fast. Anyone have any further insight into this claim? I've seen some contradicting statements on this.

I don't think the point is to burn the stove for 30 hours..... most of my customers don't turn it down less then half draft which is about 12-15 hours of burn time. So for over night burns they are generally half full of wood when you get up in the morning.

@@tinmaninc2023 I'm pretty sure that many people are just like myself and would want as long of burn times as possible if it'll burn clean. The whole point of a catalytic stove is that it can burn lower and slower than non cat. BK website claims 30 to 40 hour burn times so I'm pretty sure that's a point. But will it burn clean enough to run nicely at these extended burn times? If they will I'd GLADLY purchase an oversized stove and run it on low instead of mid range. Why not? But if it has to be ran mid range to burn clean them idk? I'm not sure what temp a cat stove has to run to burn efficiently. A catalyst for anything will lower the amount of heat required for the chemical reaction to occur which would mean it should mean it would need less heat in order to burn at the same level of emissions. The question is how low can it go before problems with suit in the catalyst begin? If you look at BK website they claim they can run a much much much wider btu range than a non cat stove. So, does anyone have a clue on the reality of this? Does a cat stove still need to burn the stove at 500° or so to burn clean? Can a big cat stove really be shut down to a low btu as per the specs and be used as such for super long burn times? If not, I think BK needs to change the specs myself. I'd love to hear from someone that's tried this. Where I live the weather changes drastically day to day and I need a much WIDER range of heat output and that would be awesome if it's realistic. One day it might be -2° and the next 60° but still wanting a little heat. Love to hear back from someone that burns one low for weeks at as time & how it turns out for the cat as well as the chimney cleanliness. Thanks for any help on the matter anyone can give

@@jackle842000 Thats one of the reasons they use a thermostat on these stoves. As the temp changes outside the stove can adjust to those changes to a certain extent.
@jackle842000

@@tinmaninc2023 does it have an actual thermostat or does it claim to like the old Ashley stove I have which really just adjusts the airflow and stove temp? If it has an actual thermostat does it require electricity? Even with a thermostat a large one would be burning low and slow in my house anyway which is why I'm wondering. Is there a good reason not to get a slightly oversized one for the home besides longer burn times so you don't have to fill it up as often? I've never seen a person in my life that doesn't want to fill one less often.
