Can i use pallet wood in any woodstove for heating ,anyone can advise me
@mdocod
@mdocod Ай бұрын
EPA testing for these stoves includes an efficiency rating produced from the test sequence expressed as HHV. The 3300 is 71%, the Princess is 80%. The fact that the catalytic stove also burns steadier will tend to mean that the fluctuations in the house will be less significant, which has secondary efficiency advantages not shown here. What this tends to mean, is that for the typical wood burner who burns 3-4 cords a year, the catalytic stove will save about 1 cord every 2 years, which basically pays for a cat replacement, but many folks get more like 12-20 cords per cat, so it's cheaper to run the catalytic stove long term if you pay for wood. Hybrid Soapstone stoves are the best fire-viewing stoves IMO. These can be burned at a steady rate with beautiful flaming combustion, but absorb that heat into the stones and release it slower. Much lower surface temps during the hottest part of the burn than a steel stove but it holds those temperatures more stable for hours after the fire has transitioned to coaling, making it much more comfortable to be in the room with or seated in front of the stove reading a book for hours. These modern secondary combustion steel stoves will often have surface temps of 800F or more, very high thermal radiation... Some people like this. It makes me sweat, no thanks. The hottest part of a soapstone stove will rarely go over 600F.

I'm confused by a statement made at 1:24, replacing the BK Princess with a BK Sirocco. I thought the Sirocco/Chinook/Ashford 3.0 all have similar 30 hour burn times close to that of the Princess. Am I missing something?

What I meant was when comparing efficiencies.... the Sirocco is closer in rated efficiency to the Osburn then the Princess is. The Princess has a better rating.

I would think the blower would have some influence on the cat. Essentially the blower is cooling the top of the unit. I think more importantly the blower may affect the thermostat and cause it to open sooner than later.

Having used all types of wood stoves I would say I prefer the reburn. Although, the catalytic stove is an old Vermont Casting and they don't have the best reputation. Whatever stove you buy, get one with the lowest possibility of an air leak. i.e. no ash dump, few gaskets. That Vermont Casting has an ash dump and six different gaskets of varying sizes. After the last time I took it apart and cleaned it up it feels like it burns through the wood faster so it must have an air leak somewhere.

Earned a thumbs up on this one, this is the first video I’ve seen that explained the difference for me. I had a secondary burn stove and thought it was catalytic. I had a single wall riser off it, and the sticker took a while to blacken and burn off. It took about 10-12 hrs on a full load and worked great. I loved seeing the flames. Almost no creosote in the chimney. My nephew had an old Ashley (conventional)that was twice as large, took twice or more wood per load, and burned it all up in about 2-3 hours. Now that I’ve moved, I’m looking for another and the thought of the catalytic type might work better for me in my old age. Less to tote One time I burned some old oak that someone had in the basement for 15+ years and it was scary how hot that dry old wood got

Is there more of a danger from carbon monoxide poisoning in a catalytic stove?
@tinmaninc2023
@tinmaninc2023 4 ай бұрын
That's a loaded question.....if installed to manufacturers installation instructions then I say no..... if not following instructions then I say a secondary air stove will put more heat in the chimney and a cat stove will put less heat in the chimney which has means the stove with lesser heat in the chimney means better change to get carbon monoxide.

I didn't know they made these. I've been ruminating on building a rocket stove mass heater, that gives off heat for several hours after an initial, very hot burn that's pretty high-maintenance, but after tending fire for a half-hour or forty-five minutes, you're done and the mass you heated up radiates heat for hours. Catalytic sounds like it has a lot fewer fiddly/experimental bits involved. People do rave about their RMH's, but they always seemed like something that you'd go through more extremes of hot and cold. The catalytic stove seems like something that delivers a consistent amount of heat for a long time, which is what you want. They are similar to rocket stoves in the higher temperatures achieved. I wonder how long the stove itself lasts, and how hard it is to swap out a used-up catalyst.

The stove shop near us in northern MN carry the Kuma hybrid stoves. They have a cat in the same location as the Scirocco so the heat generated by the cat is captured in the stove top and not the chimney. I thought I would never own a cat stove until I learned about hybrids.

Usually keep our 1280 sqft house at 75 degrees, and have burned just over a cord so far this winter. Way cheaper than a Blaze King, and manufactured just a few hours away from home for me.

It seems to me that a hybrid (secondary and catalyst combustor combined)) would be self defeating as the burn bars would introduce outside air into the firebox causing a hotter burn thereby lessening the "smudging" of the fire and lessening smoke to go through the combustor meaning shorter burn times and hotter fires. One or the other is the better choice rather than a stove with both technologies. Thoughts!
@tinmaninc2023

I completely agree with you. I feel the hybrid stoves were designed to get around any patents a company might have and were designed to pass the EPA test. If the cat fails then you still have a secondary air stove.

Fine presentation. We had Vermont Casting cat stoves for 2 decades when they first came out. Except for parts replacement the 3 VC Encores were fine heaters for primary heat in Maine. When the last Encores became too costly and time to repair we tried the "NEW AND IMPROVED" Flexburn models with the same form factor as old Encores. They did not function and were dangerous since the primary air controls malfunctioned on 2 Encore Flexburns with uncontrollable fires. The dealer ( a true pro ) refunded the full costs and took the stoves back. VC corporate was AWOL, even angry. Blaze King was on the agenda but high $$$$ and it would not fit our clearances since their thermostatic control at the rear needed too much spacing. The choice for the past 5+ years has been 2 Jotul Rangelys ( no longer made) non cats for 99% primary heat ( we have no central heat or thermostat like most set at say 65 F ) with NO problems including original gaskets and air tubes. We are home often enough to load when needed for heat. JMNSHO
