To help out an air traffic controller who was undergoing training, I flew a Surveillance Radar Approach at Southend.

I used to do my SRA’s into Stanstead back in the 70’s. Not a big international hub in those days. ILS’s were done at Luton £10 for three approaches, lot of money in those days. Great video & fond memories Jon. 👍

SRA's the controller would have a dedicated frequency and would concentrate only on that one inbound a/c they would not be expected to control other a/c as well.......so contact would be initially with APP CTR then over to RADAR CTR (years ago it was called "Talk Down" procedure.......in the late 1960's and early 70'6 that was common at LUT in bad wx......the days of Court Line, Monarch, Dan-Air, Britannia, Aer Turas Ireland, Germanair ....memories. Thanks for the upload good practice and good flying.

Great Video Jon, looks like you have really mastered the instrument stuff & ZR as well I particularly like the camera setup focussed real time on the instruments. I remember doing a couple of those approaches into RAF Benson when training with the lucky chance to have a NATS controller as my instructor in the right seat.Made for an excellent overview of how both sides think and work. We also got the chance to do the more precision PRA into Benson for controller training. Popping off the foggles at 1/4 mile bang on course and seeing the lights dead ahead was impressive to say the least. Stay safe in all this madness right now Jon and look forward to upcoming videos.

Non compass non gyro approaches are done on a discrete frequency, I'll never forget my first one as a trainee ATCO ("aha....this'll be spectator sport" from some of the old hands) not easy to learn. Regular SRAs can be carried out on the main radar frequency (subject to traffic/workload and controller). Thank you for uploading this from the pilot perspective, very interesting to see and as mentioned previously, edited very nicely :) A big thumbs up :)

I remember the days when SRA was commonplace . I used to listen on my trusty airband receiver to Birmingham Approach giving SRA instructions many years ago before the ILS was operational . I have to admit , I didn’t realise SRA was still available . I’m now living in Sydney where a similar system known as PRM approaches are carried out . I love your videos and the information and knowledge i gain is invaluable . Cheers John , stay safe and healthy , we are entering unknown territory .

I was still gaining confidence in the Arrow, and didn't feel comfortable doing this in IMC, or even simulated IMC, but you'll see that I'm focussing on instruments, rather than visual cues, so not a completely wasted opportunity,

Slight mistake at 05:35 - controller didn't abbreviate call sign ;-) Other than that a great flight!

Nigel in actual fact the full callsign shall be used when issuing a controlled airspace clearance, and you should read back with full callsign 👍

Great work, this was very informative to watch. Never saw or flew SRA approaches before. It seems to be quite different from the (more common) PAR approach, where the controller keeps non-stop talking up to the touchdown point. Looking forward to the next part.
