Cesium-137 is a radioisotope that I have particularly researched about. It is mainly used in medical therapy devices to treat cancerous tumors. Another important use of Cesium-137 is in the detection of flowing liquid, it is used to measure the amount of liquid that has passed a certain point. This feature is mainly used for the control of liquid flow in oil pipelines and to ensure the right fill level for packages of food, drugs, and other products.

I didn't know about the flow applications. Very interesting!

I recently learned that some food can be irradiated with radioactive isotopes such as cobalt-60. It kills microorganisms that make food like tomatoes and fruits go bad, so the cobalt-60 treatment can prevent spoilage and increase shelf life. This was really interesting because I had a preconception that radioactive isotopes are mostly harmful and bad!

Wow I had no idea about this application. I've just read about it and it looks like it's quite an old method that's used for food treatment. Thanks for this new information!

I have heard of Rubidium-strontium dating which is used to determine the age of rocks and minerals from the rubidium (87Rb) and strontium (87Sr, 86Sr) the rocks contain. It is also used to determine moon rock.

This is a very good example of radioisotopes used in dating non-organic matter.

One radioactive isotope that I find the most fascinating is Rubidium--86 (Rb-87). The reason is that I had previously heard that scientists were trying to use the ratio between the radioactive parent Rb-87 and stable daughter isotope Sr-87 to determine the age of rock compositions. It is said that during rock formation, Sr-86 and Sr-87 should be at identical ratios, but after time, the Rb-87 decays into Sr-87, thereby increasing this ratio. This has given scientists different clues and hints about when these minerals were formed, and create isochron graphs, allowing scientists to also differentiate time and place of rock formations. Meanwhile, in other rocks such as meteorites, the ratios will be disturbed even further.

Thank you for the video, it was super interesting to learn about Mass Spec and how it works! As for radioactive isotopes, I don't think I've heard of any specific type of them, but I remember learning in high school about radioactive decay and calculating the half-life of substances. I recall how different elements each have their own half-life, and we can calculate how much of it will remain after a certain period of time.

Yes, the radioactive decay is the way for the radioactive elements to gain stability by transforming into stable elements.

I haven't heard of radioactive isotopes in specific, but when I was learning about isotopes, I remember that carbon isotopes were used during radioactive carbon dating. I am not sure if this is an usage of radioactive isotopes, but since I learned about how the half-life of carbon isotopes was used to date architectures, I thought this would also be an example about radioactive isotopes.

This is a very good example, carbon-14, the radioactive isotope of carbon is very useful in dating objects that contain carbon.

The video question reminds me of a sci-fi fiction named “The Martian” in which I learned that some isotopes have a high thermal power density and can be used as heat sources. For instance, Plutonium-238 can be utilized in heat preservation and local heating of thermoelectric conversion devices or electronic equipment.

One example of a radioactive isotope is the Iron-59. This isotope is often used in the detection of iron deficiency in the body or anemia. I have usually thought that isotopes, specifically uranium-235, was mainly used for weapons so it is interesting to find out that isotopes have positive applications in the world.

Different radioactive isotopes are present at the places of nuclear explosions. That's why those areas are so unsafe for many years after the explosions.

I have heard that in nuclear medicine imaging, radiotracers such as F-18 (fluorodeoxyglucose) are used to detect tumours. These radiotracers can be injected into the bloodstream or simply inhaled by the patient. In terms of F-18, it functions similarly to glucose. Cancer cells tend to use glucose at a higher rate; this high level of activity can then be detected with the help of imaging techniques such as PET scans.

Iodine-131 is a radioactive isotope that has uses for nuclear energy and medicine. It is used in the treatment of thyrotoxicosis and thyroid cancer. Iodine-131 is also an ingredient in certain radiopharmaceuticals like metaiodobenzylguanidine (131I-MIBG) for imaging and treating pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma.

Uranium is one that most people have heard of I think. It's been used in nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants. The more peaceful application is the latter and it is one of the most viable proposed stepping stones to a world of cleaner energy.
