Delving back into what we might not know about the most wanted missing episode of Doctor Who!

Also, if you listen closely to Ben’s next line (still just captured at 4:14), he asks what *has happened* to them, not what *is happening* as would be the case if they only collapsed after that moment. (That is: “Look!” -> [view of collapsed Cybermen] -> “What’s happened to them?”)

Another compelling rationale, lovingly presented for a few minutes of idle and joyous viewing. Thanks

I used to say Tenth Planet 4 was my most desired episode, but honestly now I don't really. Watching it on DVD, it doesn't really FEEL missing. It's a bit like The Invasion or The Web of Fear, where we have so much of it, that what remains missing is pretty low down my list. I'd much rather have something from one of the completely missing serials. Or anything from Season 3, since most of it doesn't have telesnaps.

When I get a notification for a new David Gillespie-Pratt video I click immediately! Another intriguing point raised. I think of The Tenth Planet 4 as an episode I'm so familiar with (due to the recons, the animations, the clips, and the surviving 3 episodes before it) that I often forget it's even missing. And yet here's proof that there are still things (after so many decades of "archaeology") that we don't know. Fascinating!

I have an unorthodox suggestion: Have you tried synching it up with "Hang on... the Doctor and Polly!" Because Ben might not be saying "Hey, look..." while looking at the Cybermen; he may ACTUALLY be thinking and realising to himself, "Hang on... the Doctor and Polly!" :-D I tried it; I thought it fit really well with the mouth movements. Give it a go!

Great video as usual. Love the detailed work you do on these Missing Episodes.

As this old man recalls, the effects shot of Mondas showed in starting to break up, mostly like continents sliding off the surface (it was an upside-down Earth, by the way), then another later shot of a melting polystyrene ball representing Mondas in a later stage of melting'. The Cybermen collapsing came after then, so It may have been Ben drawing attention to what we see next: Mondas starting to break up.

I think I agree with you, but I also think the way the animation plays out if more effective, with the music playing over the disintegration rather than after it

I had an experience like this with the Fury of the Deep animation. There is a point where Jamie is in the kitchen and the foam is surrounding him and the Doctor and Victoria come to his rescue. At one point, he says something like: "I'm in the kitchen" with the animation depicting this. However, the line sounds like it's delivered from a distance, so my theory is that, in the original version, the camera is actually not in the kitchen, but maybe in the hallway. Just a theory, though.
@MMF294Ай бұрын
This is correct. The camera script for that scene (episode 3, scene 14) has Jamie's lines preceded by (o.o.v.), indicating that he can be heard but not seen. If you have a physical copy of the animation, you can check this for yourself by putting the last disc into your computer.

@@timrob12 You put the disc into your computer (or an external disc drive if your computer doesn't have one built in) and then you can access the content through your system's file explorer.

Excellent deduction! I think you've probably got it right but we'll probably never know the truth (unless the episode turns up of course!).

I can’t believe those two clips are synced.
@AJCool-wi6gh9 ай бұрын
@ David Gillespie-Pratt , can you make video of fragments of split second frames of 8mm clips, cause I noticed some, u can slow it down to notice, and you will also explain clips that were unidentified from the soundtrack, like the tenth planet where two shots of the doctor.

What's the reconstruction in the upper-right at 1:08? I've never seen that before. Looks like "new" footage? Or is it recycled from the first three parts perhaps?
@Gillespie-Pratt8 ай бұрын
It’s from a late 90s reconstruction that mostly recycled footage from the first three episodes

Makes me wonder if the episode is held by some private collector who isn’t willing to let it go yet. Is there any confirmation of this?
@nickmellish9 ай бұрын
Good stuff! Isn't there also a debate about a potential extra shot at the very end? We've the 8mm footage of the TARDIS going weird and Hartnell looming over it, then the Blue Peter footage of the regeneration. Every recon I've seen puts the two next to each other, but some reckon there is a bridging shot inbetween of Ben and Polly entering the TARDIS.
@Gillespie-Pratt9 ай бұрын
Thanks! I’m fairly certain there’s a missing shot. The camera script isn’t much help as there’s dialogue in that scene that’s been dropped for a start. My hunch it’s a shot of Ben and Polly entering and moving towards the fallen Doctor
@nickmellish9 ай бұрын
@Gillespie-Pratt Yes, that seems the safest bet and would explain Polly's reaction (i.e. she sees the Doctor collapsed and speaks accordingly). If I recall correctly, a shot like that is mentioned in Ian Levine's viewing notes from the time, which (credit where credit is due) have proven broadly accurate, I believe.
@blofeld399 ай бұрын
I saw a (fan-made) animation that had them going through the doors as Polly says, "DOCTOR! What's happened?" and they run out of shot into the next shot of them huddled with Hartnell on the floor. It fit the tempo very well, I thought.
@nickmellish9 ай бұрын
@blofeld39 Interesting! That's what I reckon happens. Guess it'll be a mystery unless the episode ever shows (a bit like "when do the credits shift from the left to the centre? Episode 4 or 5 of Marco Polo?" Would be nice to know one day, but the lack of Tele-snaps for 4 makes it unknown!)
