My memories of watching as a seven-year old include a filmed insert, in ep.2 I think, in which we see (from Steven’s POV) a zoom-in on Hartnell dressed in a grey robe (don’t think the hood was up, but I’m not sure as there’s a picture of a hooded Hartnell on the original cover of the Target novelisation.) Like Steven, I thought this was the Doctor disguised for some reason, so I was puzzled when the credits rolled with ‘Abbot of Amboise William Hartnell’ - in the usual font used as far back as Unearthly Child by the way! The Radio Times synopsis for the following episode stated ‘Steven thinks he has seen the Doctor…’ and that put a seed of doubt in my mind as to whether all was as it seemed. My strongest memories of the story are in the final minutes, where we saw some graphic woodcut images of people being pushed into fires, and skulls and bones in the midst of said fires, followed by Steven raging at the Doctor in the safety of the TARDIS before apparently leaving ( and an interesting shot where we see him walking through the Police Box doors beyond the control room’s inner doors, about the only time this was done!) and the Doctor sadly reminiscing about his departed companions before the film insert of Dodo running towards the camera en route to the police box … but somehow I can’t recall whether that godawful prop mash-up was clearly shown, I think I’d have noticed the state it was in!

Another good one, thanks. It took a while before people worked out why the original of that photo of the TARDIS from Power of the Daleks had a hole cut out where the lamp was! Trying to think, when was the first use of Roll Back & Mix done in studio with the full size prop? Colony In Space? Curse of Peladon?

This is really cool, I've never heard of this method before, I recall a video from a few years back which discussed all but this method which I sadly don't think is on KZfaq anymore. I think the more insight we get into how these effects were achieved, you do begin to understand many of the creative decisions, including any times the TARDIS landed off-screen or we only saw the console room. Great work as ever.

A video on the various TARDIS landing sound effects in the '60s would be good too, particularly during the Troughton era. I like that it could be different from story to story, rather than us having the exact same generic noise every time.

I had an experience like this with the Fury of the Deep animation. There is a point where Jamie is in the kitchen and the foam is surrounding him and the Doctor and Victoria come to his rescue. At one point, he says something like: "I'm in the kitchen" with the animation depicting this. However, the line sounds like it's delivered from a distance, so my theory is that, in the original version, the camera is actually not in the kitchen, but maybe in the hallway. Just a theory, though.
@MMF294
@MMF294 Ай бұрын
This is correct. The camera script for that scene (episode 3, scene 14) has Jamie's lines preceded by (o.o.v.), indicating that he can be heard but not seen. If you have a physical copy of the animation, you can check this for yourself by putting the last disc into your computer.

Justice for Bill! People are way too hard on him over line-fluffs and supposed mistakes in general. There's the absolute howlers that everyone knows about but there's also a tendency with certain smart-arsed commentators to jump on anything they can and call it a mistake. Be interesting to see today's TV thesps cope with the pressures of 1960s as-live recording.

The print that UK Gold had for episode 5 is quite similar to the one that survives for the final Adam Adamant Lives! episode. I have that some small miracles can be worked on the story for an ultimate blu-ray release🤞🏼

They are indeed, though in this particular case I'd be remiss not to note that the restored audio isn't actually a cleaned-up version of the unrestored audio at all. It actually uses a completely different audio source, namely an off-air home tape recording of a US transmission.

@@ennayanneI'm sure Mark Ayres would still have been able to clean up the optical audio substantially if the off-air audio didn't exist, as has been the case for a number of episodes, but it wouldn't have sounded anywhere near as good. Frankly, I'm just grateful that the BBC has given the task of restoring the series to people who care enough about it to consider using off-air fan recordings in the first place. Plenty of companies (cough Toei Animation cough) would never bother.

Perfect timing, by chance I happened to be rewatching The Myth Makers this morning. It's a shame they cut the dialogue discussing Katarina's impending death. Although I was expecting to hear there was a more natural introduction for Katarina, as she kind of just appears in episode four. But that final line from the Doctor, that's even more of a shame. Great video as ever, keep up the good work.
