Donkey Kong 64 already was seen as a game with a huge amount of collectables, but after the discovery of a new rainbow coin in 2017, the community wondered what else was lurking inside the game. Let's explore this idea.

I think the most hidden collectible (except glitches, hacks etc) is the bananas hidden in a coffin in creepy castle, that only opens if you solve a puzzle the WRONG way. The puzzle itself is easy, and rewards you with a golden banana. There is absolutely no way I would think of deliberately inputing the wrong solution, after I received the major prize. I remember I tried to find these bananas, scouting the WHOLE map. Eventually, I had to google it.

To be honest I discovered it back in 2004... I never really thought it was a big deal at all until 2017... I was so obsessed with the Shockwave attack, that I kept on using it non-stop and since Fungi Forest was a place that used to stroll around in all the time, I stumbled upon it by just randomly using that move near that hidden dirt patch.

So, officially, the game has 3500 colored bananas, 201 golden bananas and 974 banana coins that can be collected legitimately without any glitches. Additionally, there are 3 out-of-bounds bananas, 1 out-of-bounds golden banana, 3 out-of-bounds banana coins, 10 bananas on an accessible test map, and 2 golden bananas on an inaccessible beta map.

Fact: the golden banana gotten from the Gloomy Galleon seal race can actually be duplicated a single time, bringing the amount of bananas in the base game from 201 to 203 (Crystal Caves beetle race out-of-bounds one, and seal race banana duplication), or 205 including the two contained within the dummied out Stealthy Snoop. To get the duplicated seal race banana, all you have to do is do the "swim through walls" glitch underneath the seal race entrance (preferably on high tide so it's easier to reach) with any kong other than Donkey in order to access it with a faster kong (Diddy is a good option). The ship that the golden banana is stored in and pops out of once you win the race contains the golden banana the entire time, so if you build up enough speed with a kong faster than DK, you can collect the banana without actually winning the race. Where the second banana comes in is, for some reason the game puts it back after you've collected it, and it still has collision, so if you collect the banana the first time, regardless of whether you completed the race legit or did the glitch, you can do the glitch (or do it again) and get the second copy. After you get the second one, it finally disappears, so you can't just farm them, but it's strange that a second one pops up after collecting the first.
@Ballaam
@Ballaam 2 жыл бұрын
That GB can be duplicated many times. It's not actually a different Golden Banana to the one you get for beating that race as intended. Instead, the main race GB is stored inside the ship, which is the one which can be duplicated multiple times. Note how there is only one golden banana in the setup file for Seal Race: theballaam96.github.io/map_data.html?map=Gloomy%20Galleon:%20Seal%20Race

7:00 / 7:13 / 8:18 Those shots of the hidden no logo Stealthy Snoop banana look so ominous. It's like that thing is laughing maniacally atop that dark tower, knowing we can't get it without a hacking device of some sort(at least as far as anyone knows), complete with static noises made by the enemies in the minigame itself and a 70 second timer adding even more pressure. Quite a fitting atmosphere for that golden banana, even if it wasn't intentional.

Isotarge found it with a mapping tool called "Cranky's Lab" (A version of the Banjo's Backpack tool built for DK64). I am surprised no one's found a way to get to those golden bananas, due to the existence of wrongwarps... So much of the game is already understood as it is that the code has already been broken down and decompiled and put on a wiki right? To even find out that that exists. I know Stale reference manipulation is a Zelda game thing but there's probably some variant of it in n64 games in general and besides it strikes me as odd that with the memory value tricks in dk64 that have been discovered that none of them can lead to loading up that map.
@Ballaam
@Ballaam 4 жыл бұрын
Due to how the game handles areas like "Troff 'n' Scoff" (where they're the same map, but a single value modifies several properties), it's possible to wrong warp to lots of locations you normally wouldn't. (Eg. K Rool without having collected any of the boss keys). However, these are limited to internal tables defined by the game and to pre-defined points (unlike Ganondoor which, as far as I understand, is based on the blue warp performing a mathematical function on your map/exit value). The key difference between N64 Zelda SRM and DK64 Null Pointer grabs that prevents DK64 ACE or any of the SRM magic you see in N64 Zelda speedruns/glitch videos is because unless a loaded object is in the slot in which you are holding, moving around/rotating does not change the values of where the position/rotations would be. In other words, holding free memory and rotating on the spot won't alter anything in that object space internally.
@ryangainey94
@ryangainey94 4 жыл бұрын
@@Ballaam Wasn't so much thinking ganondoor as the fairly recent set of glitches they figured out which is SRM to trigger a credits warp by calculating what seems like a really precise value in memory to warp game values. Holding free memory and rotating though -- isn't that how you managed to get a cannon to load in the beetle race, because it changed a value to something that wasn't initially there? Because there's no cannon you can normally load up in Caves, which makes that different from when you can just do something like put a tag barrel in dks house with chunky object manipulation with barrels/boulders (seems like a very similar concept to SRM, no?) Finding a pre-loaded tag barrel and then using isg to get it someplace else seems like a very different thing from just turning around and putting the right value for a cannon into that loading zone. Is what you're saying that in Zelda you can use the positioning to also change map value but you can only use chunky item carry to manipulate items? Of course even if that's the case then some combination of oob warp, death warp, and isg warp might not have been documented yet that could lead to a minigame map warp and from there get to that specific map which I'm assuming has a specific value you can probably find with enough manipulation ( likely TAS-only though). I mean people figured out how to get to the test map of helm where all the animations happen and that relies on specific timing and warps presumably to get the thing right... There might be a way to link in from Snides I'm thinking... If that's a fully loaded Snides HQ in that test map with the 2 oob gbs then you could enter the minigame map from the Snides value & chunky object loading thing, maybe do something to gain control and maybe also have tag barrel storage if it's discovered that the gbs can only be collected by a certain Kong. Not saying it's easy to do by any means but I'm thinking through a series of glitches which is how most of these crazy tricks are done anyway is you can load up the value for that minigame from gaining control in Snides via isg, maybe load a cannon into snides from chunky thing, get into oob snides and find a spot you can either warp to the game itself or to the door of the snides in fake aztec oob. If it's a fully loaded Snides then that makes it easier because there should be 2 different locations that would result in the same place. But maybe that's looking at it the wrong way and you could wind up warping to it from something else entirely like how the game treats it when you play original dk in factory or jetpack game or something. As much as been discovered I find it hard to believe all of the options have really been exhausted.
@Ballaam
@Ballaam 4 жыл бұрын
Regarding the cannon, the data inside that free memory space changes due to some other element of data loading in some part of the slot. The data doesn't change proportional to any action you perform, however, like RNG manip, you can change the values that do load in that space by just doing different actions. When holding something, you don't get much choice aside from spinning, pausing and jumping. With Zelda, it's a case of rotating 39 units will increment a value (that used to determine an object's rotation) by 39. With DK, that is not the case. (Sorry, I should have been a bit clearer with my first reply.) The Helm map you are referring to is because there are in fact 3 versions of Hideout Helm. One used in gameplay, and two others which are used for various cutscenes. The way this was done was by entering a situation where you naturally get to that map, but with a state that prevents the fadeout back into Snide's/Actual Hideout Helm rather than a warp to the "Cutscene" Hideout Helm. In general though, I agree with your sentiment that not all options have been exhausted. I'm all for trying new things and never saying "never ever". With our current knowledge, it isn't possible. If somehow a DK64 ACE is found, then obviously warping to any map is possible, even if TAS only, however it's unlikely that this ACE will be exactly how it is with N64 Zelda's SRM.

Is there a way to get the out-of-bounds Chunky Coins on the European Wii U version of DK64? Since swimming through walls doesn't work.
@Ballaam
@Ballaam 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you have to get a glitch called noclip to go through walls. Here is how it's performed. Raise the water level and ensure the warp 2 (the green warp pad) on the side with the broken ships has been activated. Exit the level and re-enter and then go to the warp 2 pad near Cranky without stepping on the warp 2 pad. When you get to that spot. Backflip onto the warp pad whilst holding Z. You should appear warp to underwater, and therefore should be able to swim through any wall without C-Up. You will probably want to do the backflip as Chunky as you cannot enter Tag Barrels with noclip
@avengah
@avengah 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ballaam Ok, thanks, I'll give it a try! EDIT: It was slightly more involved: I had to smash the chest first with Enguarde, then lower the water, then raise the water and do the noclip thing, as leaving the level brought the chest back. Then I had to be very careful when swimming through walls, as going too far reloaded the level. I managed to swim under the floor to get them though, by leaving the bounds near where the mechanical fish spawns. Thanks for the pointers!

We never say there was 0% chance of it being known to someone before it was officially discovered. However, there are a few things to remember: - Prior to discovery, it was not mentioned in any guide, letsplay etc. If someone knew about it prior, there were no mentions of it on the internet. - No-one has come up with substantial proof that they did find it prior to 2017 - I have seen so many comments on various videos which talk about the topic along the lines of "I found this before 2017". I'm willing to bet that there is a non-zero subset of those comments where the commenter isn't 100% telling the truth In general, it not being "discovered" for 17 years is basically saying that it wasn't made public for those 17 years. Us DK64 runners are generally really good at finding small things people mention on the tiny corners of the internet about the game, and no-one knew about this until 2017.

I had in my head that I would get to destroy them with the strongest ground pound, and then, when I couldn't, I was too busy trying to beat that stupid cardboard boss or getting the Nintendo coin to even think about it.

What's funny is that someone posted a video claiming they discovered a pile of dirt in 2017, and now this apparently becomes the first time such a thing was discovered... while me and my friend knew about this dirt pile since 2006... unbelievable that how a video uploaded on KZfaq can make you the first discoverer of anything just because you posted about it first on this platform.

Or perhaps that such dirt pile was not mentioned anywhere, no text walkthroughs, FAQs, lists, forums or whatever and was not known to any speedrunner. Yes someone could have found it first and not said but if you, for example, find a star but don't tell anyone, you can't complain when someone else finds it and gets the naming rights and discovery credits. In the same way, yes, someone possibly found it before 2017, but after days of extensive searching, no trace of anyone mentioning they found it could be found. It's only when it's been found that people say that they found it before, some people are possibly being truthful, most are just wanting to say they found it first for internet points.

@@Ballaam I was a kid back then... so it wasn't a huge thing at that time for me and not a huge thing for me even now. But seeing all sorts of videos, making it a huge deal is kind of pathetic, no offense. And it's kind of an exaggeration to make a whole discovery video about it. Now, about walkthroughs, forums, wikis, etc. not mentioning it, remember only some people contribute to them.Therefore if these people miss such a thing, it should not be known as a discovery if found, as it can be regarded as an undocumented thing, instead. That's all there is to it. I can assure you that lots of average gamers like myself have found it, but decided to ignore it, considering that it's just some minor thing placed in some random spot. Not so important in any way. All in all, a far less serious approach could have been made to this, by simply stating that like, Hey look! There was a random dirt pile I've found that has not been mentioned by these game Wikis, FAQ, guides. etc. This random minor thing could have been mentioned in some walkthrough video without having to have a whole separate video for it.

@@javadbahram795 If it's not a huge thing now, why are you trying to argue the case that you found it in 2006? All I'm saying is that the first person to make it known was in 2017, 17 years after the game came out. People may have found it before but no-one has mentioned anything so the person who found it in 2017 gets discovery credit until it can be proven that someone found it beforehand. I'll refer back to my star analogy from my previous comment.

@@Ballaam Well... I am certain that you did not understand my comment... I did not mention anything about me wanting credit for it in any way(some people obviously knew about it since the games release). And I do not think an average gamer cares. I am not a KZfaqr, so I am not bashing the person who found this. What am I stating is that why is such a minor thing exaggerated so much? When I first read the title I was more like, was a new character discovered, new world? etc... But when I watched the video (and many others afterwards that had similar titles), I couldn't believe that such a random and pointless thing had gotten so much attention... Of course... considering that Will Smith's slap has been made HUGE and some people can't stop talking about it and it's trending now... It's safe to say anything can be made big...

DK64 was simultaneously the best and the worst Collectibles game. Best because of how many collectables there were. Worst because of how many collectables there were. Some say it actually killed the genre.

Yes and no in my opinion. Rare took the idea of a 3D collectathon to a new level of quality. If you look at the 4 primary collectathons that Rare made in the N64 Era (Both Banjos, DK64, Conker), all of them either are generally beloved and/or have a huge cult following. When the acquisition took place and Rare went on to making Kinect titles, no company out there made a collectathon of the same calibre as those 4 Rare titles (closest that comes to mind is the first Ty the Tasmanian Tiger game). However something that doesn't get talked about a lot is the oversaturation of 3d collectathons towards the end of the N64 lifecycle. Conker suffered this during development. Once something becomes oversaturated, there can be a tendency for it to die out.
