What is Flow in Video Games? (And how to get into it)

Flow is a phenomenon that you have probably heard of before under the name 'the zone' as in 'being in the zone'. It is this mental state where we become fully immersed in a task, have this high level of focus and, in gaming, suddenly become headshot gods. Hopefully this video does a decent job of explaining what flow is in games, what the main things a game needs to do to allow for flow, and how we can actually help ourselves get into a flow state!
Music used:
Fall (Ghost Synth) - Stardew Valley
The Breach in Victory - Enter the Gungeon
First Steps - Celeste
Twinleaf Town (day) - Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
The Rain Formerly Known as Purple - Risk of Rain 2
Calming Drizzle - Coffee Talk

I never even noticed flow state but now I'm thinking back at all the games I play to see if they do it well, and I think one that does is Terraria. It has 4 difficulties so regardless of skill level you can find the one that keeps the game from being mindlessly easy but isn't frustratingly hard, and every time you get a new weapon or kill a boss for the first time it feels like your getting ever so closer to your end goal.

Yes! I haven’t played terraria in a long while now but it definitely seems like a good one for flow :)

I would say a great way to "enter" a flow state mechanically (enter as in, reach a certain level of concentration by yourself, without needing to depend on your instinct) is: - spend time observing mistakes, like replays or boss patterns (metroidvania bosses are a good example because you actively get rewarded by dodging a boss's move, by doing damage to the boss) Generally, taking a minute to assess where you messed up is great for self development, not just for a "flow" state. - find out what rewards you and what doesn't ( we are animals, animal decision making is based on reward and punishment, if you get rewarded for an action, you will do it again) find the correct action in a certain situation, and do that consistently, while removing the incorrect actions.( This is great on creating a folder in your brain with information about a boss for example, you learn his patterns and you beat him, and now on the next playthrough, you reach the boss again, and now you can beat him easily because your brain is using that folder full of the information you yourself gathered). - set challenges where there are none ( even for mundane stuff, even a simple self imposed rule can make you go at full capacity) by setting a challenge I don't mean something unrealistic like being nr 1 in a ranked game, just try to be a better version of yourself by testing what you know and don't know.

I am watching this as a game designer not player. You cant put yourself in the flow as a player. That is for the designer. I have been trying to remember Jonas name to rewatch his new video on this topic. Couldn't remember but got it from your video. Thanks.

Interesting topic that i’m glad you fleshed out! Also, I think Metroid Dread lends itself well to keeping a good ‘flow’ and it’s extremely satisfying the whole way through, so i’d highly recommend trying it out in case you haven’t.

Thank you! I've been wanting to do something like this that we touched on in certain modules in my degree but only now feel comfortable enough in fleshing out a video for it! I do need to play a Metroid game honestly, I'm looking into getting some of those Nintendo Mini consoles so I'm hoping one of those has a Metroid game on it!

Flow state isn't just a thing in games, it's a thing in basically everything you do. The example of not being in flow state with a podcast that you're invested in is, i think, an example of flow, but for the podcast, not the game. Flow occurs when you can't put down a book, when you're in the rhythm of writing or doing an assignment or making something.

While flow state is something that can happen with basically all tasks or activities, I tried to keep this one pretty precise to how it works in games. I agree with what you are saying with the podcast, you definitely get into the flow of listening I suppose, however while playing games you usually tend to be in the flow of just the podcast rather than the game (or if you do manage to get into flow with the game, you may notice that you haven't taken in what the podcast has been saying for some time) - This is why I tend to listen to things when playing certain games like Minecraft when I am doing something grindy like mining or cutting wood! I couldn't imagine trying to focus on a podcast or something while trying to play OW competitive or something, my aim already sucks too much as it is!

The easiest way to enter Flow State is to completely forget about it. You'll enter it when you need it. Trust yourself.
