Genuine leather can be a confusing and frustrating term in leather working and leather products. In my leather 101 video i briefly covered the topic but didn't cover it in depth enough so this video is 100% devoted to answering the question, "What is Genuine Leather". I also threw in 5 tips on how to avoid buying bad genuine leather.

You gotta ask if it's 100% leather, not if it's a 100% genuine leather . Fully leather question might receive a weasle answer . Honey can also be blended and still sold say as genuine Manuka honey when the Manuka honey portion is say 20% . Actually there's a honey coincidentally called leatherwood honey which these days is always blended and sold as genuine leatherwood. Very expensive.

@@RoseAnvil I applaud your sentiments about supporting local artisans and makers simply on the basis of honesty and transparency. Big companies with accountants and shareholders to return value for easily cut corners, reducing an item down to a profitable level and not up to a standard. I wear both DMs and Solovairs, as does my wife. DM now being a corporate entity, passed around and sold like a money generating machine, cannot be expected to produce products at the standard they were in the 80s/70s. It just cannot work in their corporate state. Their quality is everything I expected it to be.

The leather that Red Wing produces, which is good quality full-grain leather, is also stamped "genuine leather." But Red Wing is very transparent about what the leather is. If a company doesn't tell you anything about the leather, other than to say that it is leather, that's when you need to be wary.

hey man, really like your content. as a leather connaisseur i find myself in a predicament: i have some vegan friends that refuse to buy leather shoes/apparel fearing it may directly influence the unnecessary slaughter of animals. i've tried to talk sense into them and tell them as long as they dont buy super high end shoes it shouldn't upset the balance because most "mainstream" bovine leather comes from the meat industry but they still dont believe me so i've pretty much given up. i'd like to hear your take on the matter, maybe in a future video? :)

im a leather connoisseur and a vegan. the main thing that has the biggest impact on the environment and animals is eating animals daily or at all. i believe that having small but meaningful leather items (shoes, belts, wallets, etc..) isn’t exactly ethical but serves a purpose because of its superior durability and patina over time. Leather is also biodegradable unlike synthetic leather. faux leather is horrible for the environment and in turn, the animals suffer from the pollution. you dont have to be extreme as a vegan, just be ethical and mindful of the amount of animals you kill to sustain yourself.

Is it better for dead horses to just rot away? No horses are slaughtered just for the purpose of making shell cordovan. It is a byproduct, so that when you have to put a horse down, it's not a total waste. Same thing with eating the horse meat. Every year, horses have to be killed. It's just a fact of life, and it's never going to change. Making cordovan from the horse's shell, and horsehide leather from the rest of the hide, goes a little way towards making the horse's death not be in vain.

Then I found a full grain Italian leather couch that I really liked and felt good about buying it. I looked up the maker (Soft Line) and found that they specialize in Italian leather goods, too. It's almost sad that some leather goods producers, who use full grain leather simply state on their product and website that the product is genuine leather. In the last month, I contacted two of them who came back to me with a reply stating that it is indeed full-grain leather. - both were small businesses in North America. They don't even seem to know the significance of stating that a product is full-grain leather.

Aussie saddlemaker here, always ask the seller if it is solid leather cut from a hide or side of leather, anything less that yes it is solid 100% leather, steer clear of it. Also, ask the warrantee period, anything less than 12 months preferably two years, steer clear of it. if your leather product is noticably deteriorating within a few months, take it back and ask for your money back. Best way to be sure, is to go to a craft market and ask the belt maker if they made the belt themselves. Or a saddlemakers shop (not a saddle selling shop, these guys import, they usually do not make). Look for the workshop inside the shop, this will confirm they make their own products. No self respecting saddlemaker will have crap leather or non leather in his or her shop, makes our skin crawl. One customer brought a narrow black belt to me to check, it was made of cardboard on the inside and vinyl on the outside, lasted a few weeks. The customer liked the buckle, so I make a solid leather strap and added the buckle to it. With all the left behind crap belts, I sometimes think of creating a wall of shame! I am glad this video presenter made this video, there should be more of these types of videos.

Generally a high quality leather product will specify what the leather is, be it full grain, top grain, reverse/rough out suede, or split suede. Often they will also specify the type of hide, e.g. cowhide, calf, bullhide, steerhide, horse hide, etc. If the product description doesn't say anything but "leather," that's a bad sign.

If I've learnt one thing from all these videos, it's "Genuine Leather" and that "Hide glyph" , don't mean much. I've bought a load of "belts from amazon" - had the "dress belt" that broke into paper pulp, the slim belt from a local maker that deformed a bit but held, the Chinesium belt that's built like a tank - basically pretty random experiences. I'd assumed that "genuine leather" meant "a belt made from leather" (cow-slice) - and all my good/bad experiences were either bluntly due to "fraud" (it's filled with paper pulp) or makers simply being of variable quality and there being no way of finding out, without trying. After enjoying your videos I now feel equipped to understand what's happened - and to ask for what I want. Nice thing is that it works both ways. If the consumer "doesn't understand leather", then they're going to just look at the price when making a purchasing decision. Leather worker is therefore going to try to make something to a lower price. If both sides understand what they're talking about, then you can agree to pay a bit more for something that's better - and everybody walks away happy.

A number of years ago I bought a belt in Italy marked "Vera Pelle" and "Real Leather". When I bought it and was using it, I was so happy to have had an Italian leather belt. Several years ago the thing ended up coming apart, though I never did throw it out I think because I wanted to study it better or maybe keep the metal parts. Over the last 3 months I have gotten into leather and leathercrafting in a big way and also happened to come across that belt again. Man, the disappointment knowing what I know now! It turns out it was just a cheap leather belt with that multi-colour felt-like filler. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised considering how cheap it was.

The “Genuine “ on the Horween piece of leather, refers to being a certified real piece of leather from the Horween Tannery, not the type of leather it is. The combination of words we should be considering is when “Genuine” and “leather” are together.

Very, very valuable information for the every-day consumer. I had forgotten about some of these facts, and I thank you for the reminder! Excellent; I like your standards, I like your work that you do. Keep up the great work! Producers of inexpensive leather goods use "genuine" much like food producers use the term "natural flavors" in the ingredients listing. One looks at these words and says "oh, I like genuine... I like natural..." and if they only knew what contortions the producer had to go through to be able to say those positive words to describe their product.

My interest in quality leather goods started when I was fed up with my crappy cheap belts. I started looking into getting a better belt and then one thing led to another and now I'm into heritage leather boots and I got my good leather belts. It has shifted the way I buy everything even non leather goods.

It's like how everyone calls it an ar 15, it's not actually an ar unless it's made by the armalite company but the ar term has become synonymous with that style of rifle. Love that nickleback burn though

I have a belt from J. Crew with what I can tell is very high quality full grain leather, it even had "vegetable-tanned" in the product description, but it only says "Genuine Leather" on the belt itself, so the broadness of the term can still apply to good products it seems. Though I agree, more often than not its usually only on inferior leathers
