It's important to understand what our religious directions are. What we should expect out of religion and what we should be expected to do if we accept a religion. There is nothing judgemental here or I am making criteria, but simply expressing how I feel we should apply our religious faiths for the benefit of ourselves, people around us and our planet. It is said religion can create heaven or hell within our world by some, but I think it's not the religion but our expression of it. Our expression of our religion is the potential happiness or havoc maker. Well without further ado, please listen to my thoughts in this 15 mins video extracted from the longer version.
---------------------------
TRANSCRIPT
I need everyone to go beyond taking refuge in a God, in a supreme being, and then throwing one’s problems onto this being and pushing away one’s responsibilities, and just doing prayers and mantras to say, “Solve my problems”. We need to go beyond that already.
We need to follow religion correctly. If religion was only about acceptance of a superior being and then everything is solved. Then the great prophets and masters such as Buddha and Jesus and all that would not have taught volumes of teachings on how to change your mind.
Jesus Christ taught volumes and volumes of teachings if you take the time to read. Acceptance of a God is just one small or one minor or one preliminary criteria. Same thing for Buddha, he taught for 40 years until he was 81.
If acceptance of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, taking refuge was enough to solve our problems and to release us of our predicaments, then Buddha doesn’t need to teach 108 volumes as in the Kangyur teachings. Kangyur is the spoken words of the Buddha. The bible is one book, in Buddhism, there are 108 bibles. Those were the spoken words of the Buddha, recorded and written very extensively.
My point, if it was just ok to come along and say “Oh, I made all these problems, solve it because I accept you”, then just all we need is half a page. In the Kangyur we need half a page, in the bible just half a page, it’s enough. It is so simple, just accept and everything is fine. You show me one person in this room, or anywhere in the world, by accepting everything is fine. I have accepted for 25 years, look at me, and I am still not fine.
How much more do you want me to accept? I’ve shaved off my hair. I’ve given up all the things that you consider pleasurable. And I’ve trapped myself as a monk. How closer do I need to get to my God? Oh my God! How closer do I need to get?
So, we make all these problems for 10, 20, 30 years, and then all these problems come back to us. And when these problems come back to us - our boyfriend wants to leave, our girlfriend wants to leave, our kids don’t listen to us anymore, our business is not working out, or we have too much money and we don’t know what to do with ourselves, we are bored, or we are too old - when all these problems come to us, then we say “Oh, let’s go to the temple”, “let’s go to the church”, “let’s go to the synagogue”, or whatever, and then we pray. And we pray fervently, religiously, voraciously, emotionally, dramatically in some cases. And we pray from the depth of our hearts for the God to remove all our problems.
Where can a God remove your problems? Whether it’s a Christian God, a Hindu God, a Buddhist God, or whatever God, where can a God remove your problems? That means every single one of us who are pious, and devout, and pray from our hearts should have zero problem. And trust me, you would be surprised that I have more problems than you and I am a monk. You would be surprised if you knew the problems that I have to deal with on a daily basis.
When you have for decades created all these problems for yourself, your own mind and your surroundings, and you go to a God and do one million Setrap mantras, one million Hail Marys, but your problems are still there. Well you have two ways to get rid of it, one is you give up the faith and say it doesn’t work, it doesn’t exist; or you reassess yourself and say, “Maybe that’s not the purpose of religion.”
Religion has degenerated. Partly my fault, your fault, all of our faults. Religion has degenerated into that - where we want an instant quick fix - for all the problems we have created for decades.
You go out and you say nasty things, you are mean to people, you hurt them, cheat them, lie to them, and you basically took things from them, and then you go to church and pray, “Dear God, can you please make them go away although I have cheated them, I have lied, I have stolen from them. But can you please make them go away? Because I am a devout follower of yours, I am your wonderful son and daughter, and you are a forgiving, kind and compassionate God.

I'm a follower of Christ and I found this video very very helpful (even if this monk is a buddhist). I agree with everything this monk is talking about, the one thing I never hear in a christian church (I wish there was a sermon like this) is for us to check ourselves too-especially since God won't spoon feed us all the answers. Thanks for posting this video and thanks Tsem Rinpoche's Dharma for talking about stuff that keeps me grounded

Search traditional Catholic sermons. I don't know if you are a Protestant. One of the major heresies for Baptist and Evangelicals in America is Once Saved Always Saved. That is crazy but that is what 90% of the Protestants believe. If you read get the book Preparation For Death by St. Alphonsus Liguori

This is an incredible video, and no matter how many times I watch it, I always learn something new. Our purpose in life is not to throw our problems onto anyone or a divine being, but realise that, all that we feel, all that we suffer, what results we can have, are all within our own hands. Religion is our guide, our guide to have us realise that the change has to come from within ourselves, to change the situation we are in and the results that we will have. Religion is not about destroying harmony, fighting against one another - it is about fostering goodness, kindness, responsibility, integrity, hope, love, courage, peace. Thank you for this superb teaching. So much wisdom and truth in 15 minutes.

Wow! This is an amazing talk. It is peels away at the layers of misconceptions of what real spiritual practice and what religion is really all about. There should be more religious leaders of all faiths that will preach such a message. The world would be a better place if more people practice true spirituality and true religion.

This is a MUST WATCH video! This video was posted 4 years ago, and I have listened it quite a number of times, and when I listen to it this time again, it still brings new insights. This is one of my favourite videos of Tsem Rinpoche. It is short and meaningful, and it directly counters the problem of our time: We have degenerated religion so much, that we take on religion to have a quick fix to our problems. I was like most people who used to think like that, until I meet Tsem Rinpoche, who always focus on mind transformation from selfish to selfless, and focus on activities which benefit others. The Buddhism I learn from Tsem Rinpoche is very practical, and He always focus on applying the teaching on our daily lives. I really like this kind of Buddhism. I think the video editor who edited this video from a 2 hour teaching video. It is really helpful.

Great advice. So true. Thank you. I chant sutras and I feel the spiritual powers. My home previously was having several human spirits, always disturbing me with noises. I so happened was told of a Sutra call the "white robe Kwan Yin Buddha sutra". I chant every morning and realìsed that my home is now very peaceful. I believe that Buddhist chants can help spirits as well. Now every morning I chant, pray to all Buddhas and Amitofu to to bless my family and also all spirits that are trapped in my home. This is my true experience.

Please do visit Rinpoche blog and take benefits from teaching www.tsemrinpoche.com... I wish May the Dharma penetrate deep in to your mind... :-)

Years ago I was lead to believe that to practice Nichiren’s Buddhism correctly, one had to attend meetings and belong to an organisation. Nowadays I’ve come to understand that anyone, regardless of whether they become a ‘member’ of a group or not, can benefit from their own personal practice. The reason for this is that the Law myoho-renge-kyo represents the identity of what some scientists refer to as the ‘unified field of all consciousnesses’. In other words, it’s a sound vibration that is the essence of all of existence and non-existence, the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the true creator of everything that is, ever was and ever will be, right down to the minutest particles of dust, each being an individual ripple or wave. The big difference between chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middle man’ to connect us to our state of enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves by tapping directly into it by way of self-produced sound vibration. On the subject of ‘Who or What Is God?’, when we compare the concept of ‘God’, as a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to Nichiren’s teachings, the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people call ‘God’ is our enlightenment, which exists nowhere else but within us. When the disciples asked Jesus where the Kingdom of God is, didn’t he tell them that it was within them? Some say that ‘God’ is an entity that can never be seen. I think that the vast amount of information that is constantly being conveyed via electromagnetic waves gives us proof of how an invisible state of ‘God’ could actually exist. It’s widely known that certain data being relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects, including instant global awareness of something or mass emotional reaction. As well as many other things, it’s also common knowledge that these waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to even enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars. However, none of this is possible without a receiver to decode the information that is being transmitted. Without the receiver, the information would remain impotent. In a very similar way, it’s important for us to have our ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our life, all other life and what we and all else that exists truly is. Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach into the core of our enlightenment and switch it on. That’s because the sound vibration of ‘myoho-renge-kyo’ represents the combination of the three major laws that underlie all existence. ‘Myoho’ represents the Law of latency and manifestation (Nature), and consists of two alternating states. One state of ‘myo’ is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists. This includes our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them, our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re not being expressed, our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma, and more importantly, our enlightenment. The other state, ‘ho’, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes obvious to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory, whenever we experience or express our emotions, or whenever a good or bad effect manifests from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it simply means that it has come out of the state of ‘myo’ (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ‘ho’ (manifestation). It’s simply the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing something. The second law, ‘renge’, governs and controls the functions of ‘myoho’, ‘ren’ meaning cause and ‘ge’ meaning effect. The two laws of ‘myoho’ and ‘renge’, both functions together simultaneously, as well as underlies all spiritual and physical existence. The final and third part of the tri-combination, ‘kyo’, is what allows the law ‘myoho’ to be able to integrate with the law ‘renge’. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects together all Life and matter, as well as the past, present and future. It is often termed the Universal Law of Communication. Perhaps it could even be compared to the ‘string theory’ that some scientists now suspect exists. Just as our body cells, thoughts, feelings and all else are constantly fluctuating within us, everything in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux, in accordance with these three laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of ‘myo’ and ‘ho’ in a single moment than it would ever be possible for us to calculate or describe. And it doesn't matter how big or small, important or trivial that anything may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now, or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of 'myoho-renge-kyo'. These three laws are also the basis of the four fundamental forces and if they didn't function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. Simply put, all forms of existence, including the seasons, day and night, birth, death and so on, are all moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation, rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two universal states of ‘myo’ and ‘ho’ in absolute accordance with ‘renge’ and by way of ‘kyo’. Even stars are dying and being reborn in accordance with the workings of what the combination ‘myoho-renge-kyo’ represents. ‘Nam’, or 'Namu', on the other hand, is a password or a key; it allows us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘myoho-renge-kyo’. On a more personal basis, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives from moment to moment, as well in our environment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is turning, and rhythmically chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for a minimum of ten minutes daily, anyone can experience actual proof of its positive effects in their life. In so doing, we can pierce through even the thickest layers of our karma and activate our Buddha Nature (enlightened state). We’re then able to bring forth the wisdom needed to challenge, overcome and change our negative circumstances into positive ones. It brings forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that is preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we truly are, regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexual preference. We are also able to see and understand our circumstances and environment more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations. Actual proof soon becomes apparent to anyone who chants the words Nam-myoho-renge-kyo on a regular daily basis. Everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect, so the strength of the result from chanting depends on dedication, sincerity and determination. To explain it more simply, the difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, or producing a song and so on. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gcyClrih1LbQZ6s.html

On personal practice: it will be good to follow a lineage and hence we will have a valid practice and yes, in the end, it depends on our practice, how well we can hold our vows and the effort we put in Dharma. On conventional prayers: I don't agree on 'middle man" as when each time we chant mantra, we are tapping the energy of the specific deity directly. Mantra can even heal us and lead us to enlightenment but with the guidance of a teacher(if your middle man is Guru, and to this extent I will agree as we need someone can guide us physically because we are not at that level to talk to Buddha just yet)here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l9aPg7iG07zOdYU.html here www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/mantras-holy-words-of-power.html and here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adyEf9WUkr_Nops.html Really really thank you for what you've shared here and when you first talked about this mantra, it reminds me of Tina Turner www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/film-tv-music/tina-turner-the-powerful-buddhist.html Are you still practicing this mantra daily? Do you know that there's a good book about mantra and I think you'll learn more from it John Blofeld, Mantra: Sacred words of Power www.amazon.com/Mantras-Sacred-Words-John-Blofeld/dp/052547451X This book recommended strongly by Rinpoche.

So well said and so true. Thank you. One thing I can say from personal experience is that when one accepts the teachings of Christ and asks for a new life or attitude, we are changed by God within the heart and we are given a new, heavenly nature whereby our “want to” mechanism is changed and we find we no longer WANT TO do the old things or engage in the old life or the way we lived. This is dying to self and what is termed as being “Born Again” and it is permanent. This is what the Christ nature or Buddha nature does for us... it is an internal change that gives us more compassion and love which causes a personal transformation.

And the teachings of Buddhism is very similar to the teachings of the Torah. To live righteously is to enter the gates of wisdom. The subtle difference is not to eliminate desires but to harness this energy for good works. It is not the self that we seek but to live harmoniously with people and the environment. Great sermon. Righteousness has no religious boundaries.

Amazing speech. In adressing the main problems. 'Responsibility' for your own negative actions and misperceptions are the key. Most people are unaware, and others are too scared to face what they have done /do on a regular basis. No judgment - it's very scary to do so at the beginning. But, you have to start sometime and realize that it's never going to stop. Bad intentions degrade religion and strip it's spiritual essence. That's perhaps the worst form of abuse - as dharma is what leads one out of samsara. To degrade it is the same as stopping all beings from achieving enlightenment. I wish all would just think, feel, and see beyond it all. Even for a second, it might just be enough...

Artist Katrina Brennan In any religion, whether we want to accept it or not, it’s up to us and we should not enter into a force- feed religion. We need to contemplate and then come to our own conclusion. Just like Einstein never said that He created gravity, cosmology or a whole list of other subjects. He simply observed it and came to a conclusion, and then developed its theory based on his observation. I’m glad it helps. Do head on to www.tsemrinpoche.com for a whole range of other interests such as UFO, Bigfoot, Places and etc.

Thanks brother for your exelent explanation. Brother you know that there are people who are making money using religion. Your sermon on religion, what it is, and how people have been deceived because of religion. Yes it is powerful. Hope people understand what you said. Jesus , Buddha teaching is very beneficial in our life, only thing that we should understand their teachings. But the people have interpreted in many ways, creating confusion. May your sermons be beneficial and helpful to people to change their life. I love the teaching of Buddha. Thanks.

Thank you rinpoche for speaking the Truth. Love and Compassion and purifying through pure love and compassion was the mission of jesus. The tibetans have 999 jesus forms. Hi Nicholas, not sure if this statement of yours is correct "the Tibetans have 999 Jesus forms". However, I do agree that we need to respect each other religions as most of the religions teach us to be good citizen/human being and how can we seek happiness.

It's funny that jesus, his main teaching was the sermon on the mount, he taught to give your life for the salvation of all beings, he is a world teacher and was documented to live in tibet. Jesus main teaching is compassion and forgiveness. Once we become pure beings of love we can enter the kingdom of heaven. We have all of eternity to purify. I was baptized at 14, sincerely lived as a christian, and fell into demoniac life. If I would have died, I would come back again until %100 purified. Jesus said, you will do greater things than I, certainly a million years from now I will do greater things. however now I go to church on sunday, and am still falling way short of the DAlai lamas purity.

BUT western teachings (especially the Abrhamic religions of Judeism, Christianity and Muslim) view God as almighty and can dispense Judgment and provide Salvation for those they deem as worthy.......if only you believe in Him and everything is forgiven. So the whole premise is based on reward and punishment and without taking personal responsibility. In my opinion, if there is a God, He/She/It would be too busy to take the time to hand out punishments and rewards for "sinners" and "redeemers" of humans...

This is how you should pray. "Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed by your name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done. On earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us from temptation and deliver us from the hand of the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory forever. Amen." The goal should be relationship with God through Jesus. Oneness with the Lord.

i really like your speach brother, and your so right about the things Jesus teached, and it's right to say that in Christianity people are fast to say well God is did this and that take them away, but i am a christian, and one thing i know is that God doesn't take our problems away, but He is our refuge and strong tower and Jesus is the one who died so we can be forgiven, the first step is to accept this, than we change our mindset and our way of life, but God gives us the hart to do that

If we all surrendered and everything becomes fine, then lawyers will be without a job... I tot that this was funny. This is the beauty abt Tsem Rinpoche's teachings - it is never dry and humor is adopted to keep us alert. Rinpoche is a very skillful teacher who makes us think...deeply and contemplate. Religion has degenerated, we have degenerated... We must follow religion correctly and for correct reasons. To me religion is education of life and not instant fix program. No such thing!

I'ts my opinion that Christianity changed so much over the years from the time of the apostles to the church, The apostles knew about the life in the spirit but the knew that if we are really sorry and confess our sins to God HE will forgive us, so accepting God is not much, but the first step, than accepting and believing Jesus died for our sins and rose again, than we need to put our trust in Him that the work He has done is True, and that we don't have to worry about not being forgiven....
