Hugtto Precure single handedly got me through my most depressed time in my life. It’s so important to me... Hana’s words carry me through life even when it seems impossible. I was overjoyed when I heard it won. I don’t know where I’d be right now if it weren’t for the words: “You can do anything. You can be anything.” Sometimes we don’t need amazing adult anime, sometimes people, like me at the time, need a story like hugtto, even if some people don’t understand it.

Hit the nail on the head saying it's hypocritical they can't consider a little girl's show can be good whilst they hoist up shows made for 13 year old boys.

Hugtto the GOAT I didn't really follow the r/anime awards, but props to y'all for giving Hugtto the respect and recognition it's worth. It wasn't my personal favorite from the year it aired, but it's a damn good show that absolutely holds up in comparison to stuff like Kaguya or Demon Slayer or Mob.

Hugtto! Precure is a series that really got to me. The main cure clearly being hinted at having depression and the whole "save the future" aspect is what got me to pay attention. It taught me to be better to myself and love myself and look forward to what's ahead, good or bad. I recommend watching it if anyone reading this hasn't. It might be exactly what you need, or just a fun show to watch. "You can do anything, you can be anything," will be a quote that will stick with me for the rest of my life. 💖

Funnily enough, I'm currently going through the Precure franchise. As for the whole Reddit drama, I didn't know this happened, though that's just due to the fact I left Reddit after realizing people who frequent r/anime don't actually watch anime (or more accurately, they don't watch enough anime).

I watched Heartcatch Precure as my first Precure, it did a really good job at handling serious moments and comedy moments without feeling like there was a huge tone shift, imho. I think it's rather hypocritical of people hating on stuff like Precure, because it's for girls/kids, when stuff like shounen is technically for little boys/teenagers. You shouldn't judge a whole demographic or genre, just based on a few anime. You should open your mind, and try to watch different things, instead of judging and thinking: Oh it's trash because it's aimed at this. Not saying you specifically, just anyone, and I'm not hating on Shounen either, or shows aimed at a certain target in general. Plenty of Shounen/Seinin/Josei and Shoujo anime that I have enjoyed, because I was willing to open my mind and try different stuff out.

This show released when I was still dealing with abuse by my ex, and... It felt so important to me... It became my fave Precure season because of how important it was to me... And even after it's over, I still feel happiness for this show... It's even a MAJOR reason Hugtto was the first Precure season I was able to complete...

I didn't watch any PreCure and have no intention in doing so for now, but if there are people who can do solid reviews and critique of it, with as much passion as other people can do with the big hits, then it certainlly has it's worth. Is it worth enough for anime of the year? Who knows? Certainly not me, but people who have watched it may know. Don't really get how people can criticize something they didn't even watch

I agree Precure is amazing, but.. I might be wrong, but isn't Hugtto Precure just unavailable on any western platform? Despite it being so well regarded in Japan and in the Sakuga community, it's just out of reach for most of the western viewership unless they go out of their way to pirate it. I totally get the confused pushback if that's the case. I'd say if they're gonna give it the grand prize, at least add it to your platform! :D On an unrelated note, precure's soundtrack is FIRE. As expected from the same guy who worked on Hero academia and Haikyuu

As a big fan of Vinland saga and AoT i have an extremely hard time believing that I would enjoy huggto, more than them, but I can’t say since I haven’t watched it. Nevertheless, I find it embarrassing that people react that way, especially, then we know that the people reacting like that have most likely not seen the show. And this is just a baseless accusation but I’m pretty sure the same people bitching at the jury´s rankings have no problem with the fact that the top 4 in the public ranking is pure battle Shonen. Wow I didnt know it won anime of the year thats insane! As of this year Im finally caught up on all precure series (took me a month and 2 weeks) and I gotta say Huggto Precure is my most favorite. I have no words to describe it all I can say is I had fun watching this and the final episode made me cry a lot. Honestly IMO it does deserve it and Im glad it did!

I didn't follow the /r/ awards when it was going and completely missed this happening and also slept on the show (I didn't really see many people talking about it or praising it in any way though maybe I just missed a lot of it which wouldn't surprise me), but you have thoroughly made me want to give it a shot whenever I get a chance. The whole anime awards things and giving people power to rank shows shouldn't ever be a personal attack on someone's tastes and either hating a show (you haven't seen before) or bitter that your show isn't subjectively #1 seems like such a waste of energy. I'd rather just watch those shows I haven't watched but others seem to have so much passion over and see whats up.

Hugtto is my second favourite Pretty Cure, With Fresh Pretty Cure coming in first and after Hugtto being followed by Princess, Futariwa and StarTwinkle. Being after the complaints from Japanese moms about the violence in the anime, the fights are toned down but still good. Its best strength is the message, being all about future dreams and positivity. From day one the season was made to inspire young japanese girls to follow their dreams and work towards their goal. Nana Nono is also one of my 3 favourite pink cures alongside Cure Peach and Cure Flora. Her whole character is just so passionate and upbeat and you can see the streak of maturity in her as she grows along the show. and then there's that last episode I cannot spoil. This combined with the Episodes where the Original Pretty Cure show up and the anniversary episodes make it one of the best seasons imo. So it definitely deserved the spot IMO and this comes from a guy who watches too much anime. like dear gods touch some grass you gross neet amount of anime. The only one better imo might be based on pure nostalgia and I cannot stress enough that I see the ''nothing'' in the show too but Fresh Pretty just does the Green Ranger saga from Power Rangers better and Setsuna needs to be protected at all costs. The problem with mainstream ''anime fans'' is that they are too casual. They mostly focus on the biggest most popular shonen anime and fail to reach out to more niche genres of the medium. TBH Pretty Cure isn't even that obscure since they were chosen as the representatives for the Olympics in Japan alongside Mario, Goku, Sailor Moon and Luffy. (at least the Witchy precure were) and are Toei's 4 staple shows in Sundays alongside Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and One Piece. So even if its a Japan/Piracy thing only the problem is them being tourists. Not the anime being obscure.

Damn this was my favorite Precure series, my first Precure series as well. Honestly I may give this a rewatch soon now that I’m an adult and I’m literally now working towards my future (I want to be a CPA) I like the message this season gives. And this season really was making me think about my future back when I was in 9th grade and thought I knew what I wanted to do….. until high school and the reality of physics hit me. Now with a new career in mind I feel like this season will really hit me now when I rewatch it. Perhaps I’ll like Saaya more.

Every Kamimashita video has to have an endgame

"Y'all" sleeping on kids shows" yep thats very true. Though one of the problems is that they are not as easy to watch as not many of them get western legal releases let alone a simulcast. They have to yar har fidle de de to even watch it compared to other shows. Even then just being a show aimed for little girls is going to be a massive turn off compared to a show about Vikings being Vikings. Hype is another major factor. A small community really liking a niche show is not going to get the same amount of popularity vs adaptations and shows with multiple seasons buliding up to something.

That was a great video with a lot of good points. I wouldn't have personally picked Hugtto for AOTY among the choices given (my choice would have been Symphogear XV) but it was a fantastic series and I don't see any problem in the logic behind selecting it for the award. I also definitely agree that more people should give Hugtto, or at least one entry in the Precure franchise, a fair chance.

Utterly love Precure, I am watching every season, I have yet to get to Huggto so I have not watched this video in its entirety as not to spoil myself, I will return here when I get there...which may take a while, either way Precure has become one of my favorite franchises at this point

TBH, this is more fair, after see 43th anime grand prix from animage last year, when healin good precure won best anime, followed by KnY Movie and jujutsu kaisen also won best female character.

A few years later in the 2022 awards, Precure got more representation with Tropical-Rouge being nominated THREE times - twice as a show itself, and one for a specific character I didn't look at public votes because they're gonna be super biased - but it was jury's 2nd place out of 8 for adventure anime, and 5th out of 10 for character design. *AND* Laura got 6th out of 10 for comedic character! Just comes to show, you can't just judge something by how it looks, because it may actually be more memorable and impactful than you think.

People hate on anything girly. Hugtto precure is good. Not my favorite of the franchise (Go! princess Precure is my favorite and more deep in story, in my opinion) but hugtto Precure (as I get older and older) seems to really sit well. It definitely has more of a wholesome yet dramatic effect. Coming of age and slice of life. Also fun fact, each villain from hugtto or general is based off of a different decade or Time period in Japan and all have their dreams fail and want to stay in their era which shows with their defeat and why they joined. Hugtto also did something so different for the Franchise, having two mid season curses. Who despite not having favorable costumes (in my opinion) they brought something very different to the dynamic where they were still a part of the team, but also had their own pairing separately. To be honest, I feel like Homorae and Saaya definitely needed a bit more development or maybe just more after the mid seasons introduction, but also being that they had so many different writers and also that it was the first time the franchise did something like this and also had to push in lots of anniversary episodes and things to promote the anniversary at the time I can understand certain things, things or but still the series is good. I agree with you we can’t mark things off. They’re not something we would watch because it keeps us in a bubble of only allowing ourselves to like things that we know we will like and where is the fun in that? I would never get into this franchise because it was a rip of sailor moon/power rangers but now I’d say I like it better than both of those franchises. Yes they still hold a place in my heart. It’s because they are similar to both of those franchises while bringing something new to the table why I love them. People have to remember, no matter how well they describe their interest or likes opinions will always be subjective unless they can be visually objective, which is why it’s so important to be able to articulate and describe your opinions on a series series, whether that be good or bad. Great video. People like you are good people they can remove their own biases and acknowledge things. Hopefully we have more of this in the anime community. It was certainly make sharing our favorite shows a lot less scary and a lot more enjoyable. If you cannot open your mind to the idea of something new because due to bias you may not be as open minded as you think. Maybe it was me who needed to see this video today. I saw HT, liked it, thought it had great animation, story, development, themes, and saw it it was a contender but not so much a winner. Didnt offer anything particularly unique that I have seen from 2019 and other magical girl shows. It was an a well written by the books magical show however it didnt quite have moments for me to remember to define 2019 that other shows that year had.

Plot wise, this is the best in the franchise! The dark reality where the plot is based that it's villains are fighting for

I like demon slayer and precures!! To me demon slayer stands in first place above all for a very long long list of reasons but their both fun, aslong as i get to see cute anime characters fight im happy !!!

It was more than a little silly when a show that had a whole 4 of 49 episodes air in 2019 won the award for best 2019 anime. Though I use the word "won" loosely, since it was basically just a couple people on a committee pushing for it (with most of the committee not even watching it until just before the voting process), as opposed to a win by popular vote. But Hugtto's alright. Definitely had a strong start, but lost a lot of steam in the second half. There are better seasons (HC, GoPri, Fresh, YPC5, Splash Star), but there's also a lot worse than it.

I tried watching Precure a while back, but never made it farther than a few episodes in, but I'm 100% out of the range for that type of anime. At least I know it can look stunning in animation terms, but for me the overly simplistic nature of problems and problem solving with child like characters is just boring pretty fast. (Or in other words, I am too old for that shit, maybe sadly, but that it is.)

On a side note: This season also celebrated the franchise's 15th anniversary. -Even though that OFFICALLY happened the FOLLOWING year; -*-STRANGE*!!-** Because of that- there was two episodes and their movie servicing as a HUGE crossover event. Perhaps that's (one) reason people were surprised/ ***_S A L T Y_* about this winning.

I don't expect much from a reddit award show to begin but as an actual precure fan I'm still insulted, you can't place a show with only four episodes in the year as a "2019" anime and ultimately despite its strong showing, in the beginning, it easily burns out towards the end, succumbing to Emiru and Ruru taking over the majority of the show's runtime and becoming more repetitive than even Precure should be allowed to get away with. It's obvious that this was skewed more so on baby's first experience (also likely the fact it's easily the most progressive/woke season) and less so on the show's objective quality. beta males should be gatekeeped

I still refuse to watch precure since it's too girly for me I'm sure there are male characters but just having male characters isn't really gonna get me into it I have nothing wrong with the girls being the heroine's that's absolutely fine but it's just the outfits something about them just makes the fights look weird like at least use something that won't look weird when fighting but for the anime itself I don't really have an opinion of it since I haven't even seen it but I know I'm not gonna enjoy it but I feel like it is a good show but at the end of the day I don't really know since I haven't seen it but I trust my fellow anime fans so maybe it is a great show:)

Yeah, sorry, Huggto may be a good show, but it's far from the best. It shows a certain bias that it was chosen. Then again... been there, done that. I managed to bias the jury towards choosing Sora no Woto for best scifi/mecha back in the days, for example. I managed to get enough people to vote for Korone so that she wins Best Female in the same year. I don't know how the r/anime awards voting is conducted, but probably just 3-4 people in the jury voted for Huggto. The rest of the vote just got split? 2 people for Joshikousei no Mudazukai, 2 people for Vinland Saga, and etc. People really don't realize how easy it is to sway a vote between like a dozen people. It's easy to produce erratic results like Huggto winning AOTY.

The qualities of this series are not as strong as you make them out to be. Any kid show can be said to have similar qualities if over-analyzed like this. It's not a bad anime but it's not even close to being aoty. Only reason it won is cause some jurors were biased and was voting for it no matter what and other jurors just enjoyed being hippies.
