What is it like living on a canal boat in winter? VLOG 88

Living off grid on a narrowboat in winter, I love it! There's the wonderful nature, wildlife, and the snow. How do I keep warm on my small floating home? I have a small wood burner, which is sufficient to keep my boat cosey and warm. Onboard I can get hot shower, but on special occasions I relax in a hot bath of bubbles! It can be very challenging living on a canal boat, but the benefits such as, the beautiful surrounding nature, wildlife, picture postcard scenery, and all that tranquility and calmness of the canal water out weighs any negatives. In my mindfulness moments of doing nothing, creative ideas arise from the stillness, and I take to producing some new music for my videos. A reminder to feed the birds! My bird feeder at the front of the boat is attracting many of our feathered friends, including the Robin who bring messages, and they're all grateful for the food! Sit back and relax as I take you on an incredible winter wonderland journey and cruise along the canal, featuring some of my best winter footage and unseen footage from previous episodes.
The Journey started here... I once lived in the fast lane of life, happily married of 26 years, with two children. That chapter was suddenly shattered by the sudden loss of my wife to cancer, which led me in to depression and homelessness. Waking up in hospital, after attempting to take my own life, with just a suitcase, kayak and bicycle and no money, I've managed to rise up out of the darkness and find happiness and continue my next chapter.
I'm a self taught film maker, and creating these vlogs, it gives me something to do, share my personal experiences as I continue my journey cruising and living life on the canal. Please do consider supporting my channel below... Thank you Dave

Brain my condolences 😞. If you're able to, perhaps look at doing something down the road that looks after you, sooner than later. Walks outside in nature, camping, shepherd's hut stay somewhere. When I lost my lovely mum, felt like my right arm was cut off, we did everything together. I still struggle today, but found camping and glamping helped with my mental health and with coping, I now even car camp. A change of environment and scenery, head space to cry as loud as you want and then to explore somewhere new at the same time really helps. Stay blessed 🙏🏾 I hope something I said was helpful. Just take tiny steps but don't stay inside staring at 4 walls. It isn't good for you mentally.

Dear Dave. Just found your vlog on christmas eve, having just lost my husband Terry on the 4th December, after 50 + years of marriage. It was too soon, too quick and my heart is broken 💔. What a beautiful, meditative, nature based vlog. Fabulous gentle photography and filming, that's full of hope and inspiration. We were both conservationists and loved nature and the outdoor life. We have a friend who lost his wife to cancer a few years ago and he took on the narrow boat life on the canals around Skipton in the Yorkshire Sales area. I will be taking a look at your older vlogs. This was a healing process, I immeadiately started feeling better, more uplifted. In an age of constant performing, timetables and efficiency the notion of freedom, stillness and being tuned with nature and your inner self is becoming more rare - and on the other hand more sought after, too. And the beauty of snow, ah. We have lots and lots in Finland now and it's freezing cold, too. But it's beautiful, especially on the frozen river at sunset. Take care!

At one time, in my earlier years, I couldn't live in quite tranquility. Now - in my 70's -- I could live the way you do on a narrowboat in winter. I crave the solitude, the tranquility, the peace and a good cup of coffee. All the best.

We have to live life the best we can, and when that tranquillity and peace and stillness is present, is to embrace it, but accept that one day change may come along with the challenges again. However! Inner peace, tranquillity is always there, and even in our busiest, most chaotic surroundings, it's possible to be at peace. It's just a case of not attaching to your thoughts. I would read, watch videos, reflect all while looking out my window at nature all around me, enjoying the snowfall or the wind blowing or the cold sunshine. Life is beautiful. I appreciate the little things more.

Beautiful video. I'm watching it on board my sailboat "SOJOURN" in Galveston Bay, TX. It was built by Dockrell Yachts in Tavistock, Devon. We don't get much snow in my part of the world so it's nice to see it once in a while. Happy New Year - looking forward to more vids.

Hi Dave hello from Boston USA the video you have produced with one of the other channels of describing how you ended up living on the boat was inspiring. Here in Massachusetts we have canal's but nothing like the network in England. Sad we don't I wouldn't mind living that way. I just thought a lot about my Dad after my mom passed. It was a very difficult time. Just thinking he would probably have benefited living on a canal. It's been a few years now and he's okay but not the same Guy. Anyway I'm glad you found your peace. What an experience. You have every type of landscape as your wall, without the bother of choosing a frame. A million things to spark your imagination and foster your interests.
