Since it's been years since I covered the topic, I figured it was time to do another what is mesh wifi video. In this Decodr episode, we discuss what mesh wifi is, its benefits, as well as what the difference is between mesh wifi and wifi extenders plus all the new wifi standards that now work with mesh like WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E. Never knew about mesh till last week. Set up a 5 piece eero 6e pro system. I have 4 in the house and one in the garage and now I've got insane speed anywhere on my property. It took about an hour to set everybody up and its been wonderful.

@@benhartson I went with the Eero 6e pro. Initially I set up 5 units as my house was fiarly large and I wanted garage coverage too, but I found out that the range these have is pretty good and I've sent 2 back. I actually had too many and it was causing occasional issues with not knowing which hub to connect me to. 1 on each floor and one on the garage and I have excellent coverage.

I have a google mesh network for home automation and improved WiFi. Funny thing is, i was surprised when the router i plugged in to use as an ethernet only connection automatically surrendered control to the mesh network, which tells me that if I wanted to, I could theoretically use any WiFi device to extend my network. That would make things very interesting if that is the case.

Thanks for the introduction to this topic. A couple of questions if I may: 1) Each nodes must be plugged into the mains for power but does it transmit any signals on the mains wiring? The reason I ask this is because HiFi critics often say that they have measurements to show that wifi extenders introduce noise into the system which has a detrimental effects the performance of Hi Fi components. 2) Do you have to run an ethernet patch cable between the base and the other nodes?

Just buy standard routers and connect in Access Point mode, they are usually cheaper than mesh satellite devices, and you can also set them up with the same SSID - your devices will auto switch to whichever access point is nearest.

WELLL... Yes it's stupid-easy to set up, but there are glitches with old wifi devices, like WEP printers and such... At least it's an issue with the Eero mesh; YMMV. Before jumping in to installing the mesh, it would be nice to mention this... ALSO, some relatively new, but older smartphones (like older Samsungs in my case) do not host the mesh well... the app gets clunky... AND... some of us less-fortunate folks out there got some work-mandated equipment (usually older, but tell THEM that...) and aps that don't fly well if there are multiple network entry point in the home - which some of us gotta do... But this video is awesome.

If I want to move from the old conventional 2.4GHz Wifi to 5 or 6 GHz, how do I cover a space of 8000M2 with a lot of concrete (fortified) walls. I would need a lot of mesh wifi devices. Correct or is there a smarter way of doing that? Salamat
