DECOUPAGE BEGINNERS! Join me, Amy Anderson, as we discuss everything Mod Podge Dimensional Magic - a resin like product that is acrylic based, so not as toxic as regular resin. Use it for your scrapbooking and typical resin crafts!
This originally debuted in our Facebook group on November 27th, 2020: / craftywithmodpodge
It's a very introductory course to Dimensional Magic - no projects, just a discussion of what it is and showing how to use it.

I’m in NYC and work w polymer clay. I am severely allergic to uv resin, found out the hard way, and I’ll never touch it again . I’ve used Mod Podge before and am hoping that I can get a similar finish with one or more of these products. I had a bottle of dimensional, bought a long time ago, and I did use it on one of my pieces and was surprised that it actually moved like UV resin. I have a way to go to use it well but I think I’m sold! Thanks for this video. I’ve subscribed.

I use it to decorate oyster shells after I apply glitter nail polish, rock salt, beads, pearls, etc…I then apply dimensional magic and for the most part it works great but you have to cover all the beads, etc that you place on the shell. I did have one or two that came out a bit cloudy. It’s definitely a learning process.
@ModPodgeRocks
@ModPodgeRocks Жыл бұрын
Hi Pam! It totally takes some time! My only recommendation that you might be doing, so it isn't cloudy, is that you apply thinner layers letting dry between each. Also don't let dry under a fan or in too cold of a climate. Good luck!

I loved using Dimensional Magic, and used it for some small ornaments for the Christmas tree. I made about 30, and put them in a box after they had dried. I was very happy with the result, and happily showed them to my daughter 2 weeks later. However after another 3 weeks, about a third of them had gone yellow. I tried to work out the cause, but I haven't been able to figure out why some were yellowed and others were not, as I used the same process for them all, and they were made from the same base materials and stored the same way. The Dimensional Magic had been applied to store bought stickers applied to acrylic painted and sealed wood circles. The wood circles were completely dry and sealed. The stickers had been coated with mod podge and dried before applying the Dimensional magic. As you can imagine I was disappointed, as a lot of work had gone into the project. To rescue them I then had to sand down the yellowed items to get the yellow coating off and then applied UV resin on top as I didn't trust the Dimensional Magic I had used. I thought perhaps the product I used (I used 2 bottles) may have been "old" (bought from the same store at the same time and used at home within a week, but it could have been that one of the bottles was old on the shelf in the store). I would love to try Dimensional Magic again, but I'm a bit concerned about ruining a project again...

I've never had Dimensional Magic yellow like this - was it the exact same paper, exact same paint? It's hard to say. Were the ornaments made in China? Sometimes those yellow depending on the quality. What you can do is contact Plaid: plaidonline.com/about/contact They make the product and could check the lot #s, and help you get this sorted out!
@Lia_T
@Lia_T 2 жыл бұрын
@@ModPodgeRocks The ornaments were wooden circles from our own tree (seasoned magnolia) , and the stickers were from the same set, all made in China. The dimensional magic had no direct contact with the wood that I can see ( which might cause discolouration from tanin in wood) only the painted surfaces with stickers applied. The acrylic paint was from Ranger. I still don't know what caused some to yellow and others not, but I wonder if it might be to do with drying time and differences in humidity on different days. It was humid here. I might have to do a few project tests to see if there is a variable causing this.

You may have answered this somewhere but I just found you and you explain things really well and are informative. I paint wooden blanks and I've found that when I've used other mediums to top coat, makeup ribs of on the back and I'm looking for something that people can be wiped down with a damp cloth without smearing or ruining the paint on the back. Do you think this may be a savior? Lol 🤣 thank you ahead of time.
@ModPodgeRocks

Yes! This could work for sure. I will say, it's pretty tough though I'm not sure how much wear and tear the blanks will get. I'd try this first because it's easy to apply and non-toxic. If that doesn't work, you'll have to likely move to resin: modpodgerocksblog.com/mod-podge-dimensional-magic-vs-resin/ But I think it should work!

G'day! ;) I'm looking for something to toughen and seal cardboard board game tokens, covering both surfaces and the edge(s). Could you sand Dimensional Magic, to flatten the surfaces? Could you achieve a matte or satin finish? Or could you then buff it, to bring back the gloss? And how would you suggest sealing the edge(s)? Could you use, say, regular Mod Podge on the edges, in combination with Dimensional Magic on the surfaces? Any other tips you would suggest for this kind of project?
@ModPodgeRocks
@ModPodgeRocks 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean! I don't know that much about sanding Dimensional Magic. You could only get a shiny finish as far as I'm aware. You could seal the edges with regular Mod Podge and put DM on the top - but I'm wondering if you wouldn't want to use epoxy resin. I think that might be more suitable for your needs. Check out epoxy resin - you can sand it too.

Love your video! I'm making earrings with a wood base and scrap book paper. Do I have to seal the paper with regular mod podge on top of the adhered paper before adding the dimensional magic? How thick should I cover the earring with the DM? Also, does the DM yellow over time? Thank you!
@ModPodgeRocks
@ModPodgeRocks 3 жыл бұрын
I would seal with Mod Podge so that the DM doesn't get underneath and buckle the paper. Make sure it dries for quite awhile (a few days) before applying DM. Seal the edge (where the paper meets the wood) well. You can't really choose the thickness. What you CAN do is layer. So you can put one layer down - let dry - see if you like the thickness and then apply another layer on top. It can yellow but it takes FOREVER to yellow. I have 13 year old jewelry that is not yellow. :)

Hi, I'm from Sweden! I am making shrink plastic and got me some dimensional magic but it looked a little cloudy in the bottle, I haven't actually used it yet. My bottle doesn't have a tip tho, so I'm thinking about geting a pipette but I'm afraid that there wil be alot of air bubbles, I'll see what I do! UV resin is way to expensive here, and also a UV light just costs too much.

So if the image is laserjet, you don't technically need to seal it before adding the Dimensional Magic. If it's inkjet printed, then yes. It's all about the image bleeding, which you don't want. Check out my blog Mod Podge Rocks for more information.

Hi there! It really depends on what you put it on and it might ruin the surface. For example, if you put it on paper, it will tear the paper if you remove it. Wood, you might be able to soak it and pop it off. I would consider it relatively permanent, though if you HAD to remove it you could.
