A month after Rishad Premji's warning, Wipro has fired 300 employees for moonlighting.
Moonlighting is when you take up a job apart from your regular 9 to 5 job. Food-tech startup, Swiggy had recently announced its moonlighting policy, allowing its full-time workers to take up another job. But as the work-from-home culture picked up during the pandemic, employees from around the globe have started taking up multiple jobs, especially in the tech sector. Some do it for money, some to gain more experience and some to just combat boredom.
But are there any laws that govern the moonlighting trend in India? Is it ethical or is it cheating?

There is too much exploitation of software developers in the tech industries, there is a time to go in but no time to come out, mostly employers expect overtime everyday but they don't even pay for that extra hours, I say moonlighting is an invisible slap of pandemic on them. These kinds of employers often exploits hired fresher.

The main reason company does not allow Multiple jobs are they make employee work on Salary which can just sustain them for living so they have to work more years and are dependent financially on the company other hand HR and MBA staff are mostly not skilled enough to take multiple jobs, so they discourage other to do.

Free Lancing is the future It would be better if these IT giants start adapting to this. They cannot expect 100% loyalty from employees when they themselves pay them ridiculously low salaries and treat them like machines and have a toxic work environment. This firing episode is only going to pave the way forward in favour of moonlighting and free lancing. At the end of the day, the skills of a person is going to remain with him/her and these IT managers would be really foolish if they think that they can 'control' it.

Exactly and what's the consequence if I get caught? I get fired? That's okay. I'll have three other jobs anyways. I'm in America and I've been caught moonlighting. I didn't care one bit when I had three other jobs and had replaced the fourth within a week. If you're capable of handling such a high workload, you're capable of easily finding another job.

@@ElonHusky companies can't get someone incom details through PAN card. They can only calculate tax on the bases of employees salary. That's why we file income tax return to get tqx calculation and deduction.

@@remrem6681They know your double income tax filing and PF account conflict If you have a secondary fulltime job, If you're doing freelancing then no one will find it or choose a small company that pays less than 25000 and less than 20 employees sp you don't need to file 2nd Income tax and There's no PF

I used to do moonlighting in the early 1990s when I didn't even know the meaning of the word. It was of course for extra income which is more ethical than getting involved in corruption, but more than that I wanted to use the skill and expertise I had which was not being utilized in my regular job.

In medical fields 90 percent staff in moonlighting. Example, a doctor open up his own clinic and also give some hours job in a hospital as well.

#Moonlighting should always be OK and Ethical if it is Done Outside the Working Hours in a Day OR Outside the Working Days in a Week of the 1st Job. Employee has to make sure that the Tasks of 1st Job are not affected or need extra time. #Wipro #Infosys #TCS #TechMahindra #IBM

Medical Professionals do take up multiple consultant in multiple Nursing Home as well runs clinics . As long as there is a division of time & efforts & there is no cross reference, it needs to be accepted . Will enrolling a Sat&Sun class program of IIM, IIT & BITS leading to a Master's or Certificate considered as "moonlighting"

What does the constitution says ? Any contract should be mutual in all terms..! Any HR contract is one sided, it is not supposed to stand in the court of law as the legal system doesn’t allow in India

If one company pays enough then why would anybody will look for another job. Being in IT Industry for last 15 year i have observed that IT Dept is always neglected by the companies. As per them they always say or have in there mind " *_are woh tho IT wala hay uske pass thodi jyada kaam hai_* " or something like this. We are also having a family, we also want our familes to have a comfortable life, with all the salary company pays its very difficult to make the ends meet. So its our way by using some free time,if we can earn something which can help our families or us its perfectly alright. This my personal opinion. Please don't get offend by my words.

Moonlighting is not practical in India with more than 2 full time jobs as this will reflect in the Form 16 and Income Tax which the employer will get informed.So my view is who ever is taking about moonlight first they should get experience in moonlighting and they should advise.

This is what a crap mindset of big MNC's they are still in era of back 90's where employees can be punished, underpaid.Irony is Wipro speaking about Ethics ask them what salary they pay to freshers ? In last 15 years the inflation is~6% and increase in pay of freshers is almost nothing where he stands on ethics here? Today IT market is employee driven and US companies know how to operate directly in India so, the era of these service companies is over better they should focus on making lightning bulbs which no one buys 🤣🤣. People are speaking about India Golden era is gonna start soon. My dear friends Golden era is already started we, IT people are sitting on goldmine (Not taking risk in life is also a Risk that is Opportuninty cost)

Well from what I see, Infosys is losing a real talent, someone who can work hard, multi-task and get results for the right amount of money. Guess a day would come, with this attitude, they would be paying through their nose but still not getting required talent. And please loyalty for big corporates, is a myth. The employer knows that, the employees know that, the dog taking a piss on the CEO'S car knows that. Its not the employee who lost the job, its the Employer who lost the talent.

1. Moonlighting should be made legal in all states 2. No company should be allowed to have a notice period of more than 30 days This will allow employees to get the best financial outcomes, while forcing companies to pay well.

That is called "overtime" and is supposed to be paid at 1.5 times the regular wages. But companies don't allow overtime - that will eat too much into their bottom line. They would rather try to black ball their employees into doing untimely work without filing for overtime.

@@starkfuture1057 I was referring to an employee contributing towards a different project or department within the company which is interesting and provides the individual an opportunity for new learning. Let us say a software engineer whose main job is to build the product and who is willing to work with the marketing team on an automation project. The contribution is quantifiable for which the company can compensate the engineer.

Companies has your PAN card number of their employees they will give to auditor and them to check for ITR. Your IT return will show the tax paid by you for various job you took and interest dividend everything your received.

Swiggy itself is a part time job and doesn't pay much. Unfair for swiggy to put such conditions. You pay a better wage and then talk about all this fancy moo lighting stuff. If people are surviving by getting 10k per month and then you are not letting them work anywhere because it shitty moonlighting conditions then they will get frustrated and work harder to another job

I respect my manager and I love my job and I am happy with my family. Moonlighting Gaya bhar mein.. as a senior employee they can't say ok this is your shift and any specific critical job may need your support. Unless you are in declared leave, they can ask you for help. So keep it simple.🤞
