What is MTHFR?
MTHFR, also known as methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the methylation cycle within many different processes in the body. This is actually one of the more common gene mutations in humans, and many people actually have a MTHFR gene mutation without even knowing it. One of the more common ones being MTHFR C677T. In this video, I will talk about what exactly this MTHFR gene is, more about the MTHFR enzyme, and dive into the components within the diet and body. One of the main topics being folate: why low folate levels may occur, foods high in folate, folate metabolism, and what methylated folate is. The other being related to neurotransmitters: what high homocysteine levels mean and methionine's benefits.

This was an incredibly well done video. This is the best explanation I found, and I’ve tried to watched a lot of videos to understand it this. I’ve just started taking methylated folate and everything seem to be fine but I think I overdid it and it came down incredibly sick. Terrible nausea and just felt horrible for about three days. I’ve stopped taking it now and it must be a dosing issue. Have you found, any side effects from taking too much methylated folate? Thank you so much and I think I’m going to schedule an appointment.

@@tanyawieczorek6603 So my reaction to the methyl folate was extremely negative for me. I must have a serious problem with that form. That said I did some research and found a supplement on Amazon from a company called PINK STORK that uses a natural FOLATE that worked really well. It was started by a woman as she needed to find a good solution for her own personal situation.. and I am very impressed with it for me. It fits my system well. :) Thanks for asking.

I know 2 people with MTHFR mutation and double dose of B6 in the blood. Does it mean that it can’t be turned into active form and the body is in deficit? Do they have to supplement with the activated form? How to get rid of this blood excess? They don’t supplement.
@OswaldDigestiveClinic
@OswaldDigestiveClinic Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and commenting. When taking supplementation for MTHFR is recommended to take the activated forms, because due to the SNP's individuals are unable to methylate them properly. If there is a high amount of B6 in the blood, the way to reduce is to eliminate supplementation until levels reduce. To find underlying causes of high B6, I recommend they work with a practitioner.

Thank you so much!! I recent had a test done with Genomind due to depression and ADHD and why medications weren’t working. My MTHFR gene came with the following C677T: C/T A1298C: A/A They recommended that I take Deplin or L-Methylfolate and exercising instead of using SSRI’s. I noticed the following day after taking L-Methylfolate, I felt happy and sharp. I was able to hold a conversation without forgetting what I was talking about and just felt happy overall. But unfortunately that only lasted a week. What do you think went wrong and what can I do to feel normal again? I did buy a small bottle Niacin as I read an article it may help. Many articles say L-Methylfolate takes 2-3 weeks to kick in but for me it started working the next day. I have taken several medications in the past and never had results like that so I am sure it wasn’t a placebo effect, at least it felt real to me. I don’t drink alcohol or caffeine, workout 5-6 days a week and my diet can be better but I try. I can’t eat certain veggies as they make me sick but I do try to make up for that with vitamins. Any recommendations you can provide would be appreciated. I do have IBS, get migraines and headaches, have sleeping issues, high cholesterol and pre diabetic. I had these issue since I could remember. Cheers.

Hi Calirican! I'm so sorry for not seeing your comment here sooner, but I hope this reaches you. You are on the right path, with looking for root causes to your symptoms instead of settling for medications that don't give you full results. With mental health, there can be many possible root causes, and often multiple at the same time. I'm guessing this is happening with you. With IBS, there is a gut - brain connection, so I would suggest exploring this further. At our clinic, we have helped clients get rid of IBS (and I got rid of my own IBS many years ago, too, prior to starting our clinic). Migraines and headaches can have their own root causes, which could be what's going on with your gut, or it could be a nutrient deficiency like magnesium is very common (and low magnesium can cause some of the other symptoms you're experiencing either directly or indirectly such as causing sleep issues), pre-diabetes could be contributing to hormone imbalances, contributing to mental health challenges, and more. Do you have insurance? I really feel our clinic could help you - you are so similar to other clients we have and we'd be thrilled to get to work with you on the journey of feeling better! You can schedule here if this sounds aligned: www.oswalddigestiveclinic.com/schedule

Folate is best absorbed when taken with vitamin c containing foods or supplementation. Salt has been shown to help folic acid to be absorbed better, however, it is best to stay away from folic acid supplements and consume a methylated form of folate if needed.

@katelynnvifquain9629

Important correction: you mention ~3:00 mark that we get folic acid from food … this is NOT true, as it is NOT naturally occurring! As you explain later in the video, folic acid is the synthetic man-made version of folate, which IS naturally occurring in food. This is a very important distinction, as our bodies CANNOT use folic acid until converting it to folate via the dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) enzyme. Many people - estimated to be a good 40% of the population - have genetic variations that result in limited DHFR activity … thus, these individuals are especially prone to the health consequences of over-consuming folic acid (because so much of our processed foods are supplemented with it) and over-accumulating metabolically inactive folic acid in their bodies. So, please share that in fact our bodies DO NOT get folic acid from food, and that MTHFR uses FOLATE - NOT folic acid! One great resource if you or your viewers want to learn more on this clinically significant distinction is to do a Google search on the topic and Dr. Ben Lynch.
