Olympia Looping is a steel travelling roller coaster, meaning it tours various amusement parks, funfairs, and other events throughout the continent of Europe. But what makes Olympia Looping special is that it’s the world’s largest travelling roller coaster, featuring a record breaking 5 vertical loops! In this video, we explore the history of Olympia Looping, from the debut of the modern day looping roller coaster, to the fact that it was nearly never built!

We got a small thing wrong in this video. It was in fact Rudolf Barth that first built Doppel Looping (double looping) in 1979. Oscar Bruch did go on to open his own version, as stated in the video, in 1981. Sorry :)

Had the opportunity to ride it at Bremer Freimarkt in Germany yeeeeears ago. In fact Bremer Freimarkt (which is the largest fair in norther ln germany and has a rich history) featured every single coaster mentioned in the Video, including Thriller and my favorite: the back then so called HimalayaBahn, which to my delight returned 2018 as AlpinaBahn to Bremen. Thanks for your great educational as well as entertaining content - keep up the good work!

I really appreciate your pronunciation, especially of the ‚ch‘ 👍 But you did one small mistake: the H in BHS means ‚Hütten‘ and not ‚Hutten‘ (which is the german name for ‚huts‘, the star wars alien race of jabba the hut 😂)

I remember growing up a parkfan and thinking "one day I'll go to Oktoberfest and ride the Olympia looping" only to have it come to me in London. I almost lost my mind seeing it on the poster. I thought it was too good to be true. It's still so smooth yet so intense, A true classic, long may it reign.

The amazing thing about Olympia Looping is not just that it's an incredible travelling coaster, but also that it's an incredible coaster full stop. Even if this were installed as a permanent attraction at a park, I still think it would be rated very highly!

First rode Olympia Looping in 1995 at 6 years old at my local fair. I've since rode it countless times on countless fairs in Germany as well as at Winter Wonderland in recent years. The fact that such old ride is the star attraction at Winter Wonderland, shows what a good ride it is. Big transportable rides like this use to be very common in Germany in the 80s, 90s and early 00's, sadly there are just Olympia Looping and Alpina Bahn left now.

I rode it last May in Cologne. Didn't know it was there (or that there was even a fair going on), but whilst crossing the river I spotted this beast from afar, and once I realised that it was the Olympia Looping, that was my day's planning out of the window. Even though it was May it was cold af and quite windy, so even though they were running just a single train it was basically walk-on and free choice of seat. As someone who generally doesn't like inversions this has to be just about the most fun I ever had on a roller coaster, and given it's age and the temperature it was incredibly smooth (much better than the Vekoma Looping coasters where my dislike for inversions comes from) and very intense. As it is quite expensive I only went for two rides

Hello I am American here, I just want to tell you guys that we had giant steel portable rollercoaster built by Schwarzkopf here in the United States. It was called Doppel Looping Star and it was owned by Conklin Shows of Canada, the largest traveling amusement company in North America. The Doppel Looping Star was held at the Dade County Youth Fair located in Miami Florida for well over 25 years until it retired in mid 2000s. It takes close to 40 semi-trucks to transport the portable coaster, sadly Conklin Shows no longer operates at the Dade County Youth Fair, the new owners are North American Midways. As for the Doppel Looping Star, it was bought and sold by an overseas customer. The rollercoaster is no longer held in the United States. I was told that the rollercoaster is operating somewhere in a middle eastern country. Do a youtube search and you can see the Doppel Looping Star in action at the Miami Youth Fair.

Living in the country where this coaster and its ancestors were created, I have ridden it multiple times. And the entire heritage line of Schwarzkopf transportable looping coasters (even though most work on this one has been done by a nother company it still follows the Schwarzkopf heritage) is just great. And they can remain their smoothness if properly maintained - the "Alpina Bahn" a coaster using the same type of track, just without inversions, is several years older and still provides a great ride experience. However, there are two little things I'd like to add - the "th" in the German Name Barth isn't pronounced like the English "th", it's just like a "t". Think of how you pronounce the "Th" in the name "Thomas". ;-) Also, the Looping Star that operated at Slagharen and is used to show the first transportable looping roller coaster built by Schwarzkopf wasn't the first one. The prototype that ran on the German fairs in the late 1970s is the one that operates at Frontier City, Oklahoma, USA today - going by the name of Silver Bullet. There are a few details where this prototype differs from the later batch of 7 Looping Stars. But yeah.. it's close enough to show the origins and probably it was easier for you to get footage of a Looping Star that you could use, so I won't be too pedantic. ;-)

It is absolutely amazing after all of these years how smooth and intense this ride is. I wish Lagoon would have bought Olympia back a year or so ago when it was for sale. I rode it a long time ago on Oktoberfest in Munich. It was at the Prater in Vienna when I visited this year as well but I skipped it due to the very high price. It is a great coaster though from what I remember and maybe I'll ride it again at this years Oktoberfest.

Everyone here calls it Fünfer Looping. Sadly it's only for people smaller than 190cm. At a little more than that, i managed to fit it the seat but my spine didn't like it. But it was one smooth ride and it's simply a landmark of Oktoberfest just like the massive Ferris Wheel.

I rode O.L. yesteryear in Düsseldorf. Teststrecke in Tilburg 2x. Unfort. not all the others. I regret missing out on the Looping Star in Slagharen before it was demolished as that was the 1st looping coaster in The Netherlands. And i like the more round loopings more than the more clothoid type loopings where the travel through the loop is more jerky.

I'm probably not going to be the first one to say this... But the first corkscrew wasn't built at Cedar Point. It was built at Knott's Berry Farm. Which yes, is owned by Cedar Fair nowadays. Both Revolution and Corkscrew both were the first inverting modern steel tracked roller coasters and both opened within 1 month and within 50 miles of each other in Southern California. Still a great video and that particular Schwarzkopf is extremely high on my bucket list. I have no idea how I'm going to manage to ride it given I'll have to fly into Europe and visit the exact country it's in at that given time. ;)

You're right the first corkscrew did open at Knott's, but that didn't feature a vertical loop. Corkscrew at Cedar Point was the first to open with a vertical loop built by Arrow Dynamics! :)

Having a Schawrzkaf looping coaster nearby and knowing how many people get pretty bad tunnel vision or straight up blackout on the double looping makes me wonder about which loop this happens on this coaster

one good thing about German is that pronounciation is very close to the way it's written - "Fünferlooping" s not "fun-far lopping" but "Fünva-looping" .. best to look up the "ü" sound.

Really good videos, just subbed! Not sure if you'll see this, but you should do a video on the unwritten rules of coaster/amusement park etiquette! So things like, on a 4 person per row coaster, if you're a group of 3 and there's of 2 is directly behind you, let those two pair up with another pair, and you try to get a single rider from behind them (or vise versa if you're the duo, try to find a solo rider to match with the trio and you find another pair). Or only send 1 person from your group to the item storage bins. Or if you have to leave the line, realize that you shouldn't have someone "save your spot" for you to come back as the line has advanced, things like that!
