@@stillmattwest Think is, for PF1e lovers there is no new content and dwindling Tabletop player base. So it really doesn't matter what AP they pick. We will be buying every single one. Don't need anything more that WotR had. Completely fine with less actually - if they just stuck to RPG without the kingdom building / army management systems. Strategy elements are what make these games stand out to me. I severely dislike only being limited to 6 people when I have to change the world or beat near-deities. Having some larger control of the world makes it all make sense. I heartily agree with you on this. I really appreciate that Owlcat is trying to push and experiment with mechanical ways to engage with the world. I feel like most crpgs really only have two ways to engage with the world; dialogue mechanics and combat mechanics. And I feel that combat mechanics are always the most robust and in-depth mechanics a crpg offers and the ones that get the most focus and evolution across the genre. Owlcat's strategy layer, flawed as it can sometimes be, is them giving us new ways to interact with the setting. The way some quests will unlock management missions and vice versa, or crusade missions get you new items and bonuses, it's all really interesting and an idea that should be nurtured and grown so it can mature to its best version, rather than be removed entirely because they didn't quite nail it.

I think they could certainly be improved though and I understand why they aren't a popular part of the games. I think if they made a game where the party has less overall power in the world, the system could be scrapped for that. So, if only one game is new IP, means the three other games they work on are IP's either established by them or by someone else (if they are already working on a project for someone else). Also they are working already on an action game with Unreal Engine and they focus for now (most immediately 2-3 games) in narrative/RPG games. They mentioned the desire to make a grand tactical game and they have mentioned earlier their deep love for the Might and Magic series which is a huge influence among Russian game developers. So my wild guess for the nature of the projects is; The four games, 1-2 are Pathfinder-related, and one game could be continuing their Divinity series. Or maybe one game developed is new Might and Magic titled, either grand tactical or RPG oriented. The new IP is wild card guess what it's going to be, but possibly an RPG as well. Possibly action/RPG like Dragon's Doghma. Wild guess of the theme may perhaps be cyberpunk or maybe even shadowrun-themed RPG?

I think owlcat would do great to evolve their pathfinder systems further. They seem to be heading on a more tactical direction with combat, and thats what I'd like, like they did with rogue trader. Something closer to simulating the pen and paper experience rather than the classic crpg that usualy devolves into making gish characters that self buff then hit everything in real time to death. Addibg more verticality to combat, like BG3 and solasta did would be great too. Pathfinder WotR was an absolute gem of a game, and something with that scope with more tactical combat would be amazing.

The OGL fiasco means that they're probably gonna need to go back to the drawing board and make the next game using 2e and the ORC license Not saying they can't make it tactical, I love the Pathfinder 2e system. But they will be starting over.

I agree about the management systems in the games. Maybe I just don’t have enough experience grinding through them but my current take is that yeah they are somewhat of an inconvenience and they take away from just being able to focus on questing and character progression. I’d really like another pathfinder game. I’m really obsessed right now with WoTR.

I'd like to see a good blend of game types. You mention pathfinder, I'd like to see perhaps a RTS set in pathfinder's universe. Like, perhaps someone who has decided to lead Devils against the Demons of the Abyss. Have some sort of stats perhaps but make it more complicated than that Crusade system. Have some sort of Diplomacy mechanic where you court the support of Archdevils and remember to give proper thanks and pass along the proper 'respect' to those devils that are higher ranked than you so you can further your own aims etc, whether that means more troops than what the archdevil is obliged to provide or whatever, maybe even 'game' the promotion mechanic to make particular Devil's overly beholden to you because you just make sure they get promoted up the food chain, whereas they might otherwise be an Imp still but now they could be a Pit Fiend. Maybe have a realtime portion where it's like the Pathfinder we know and love when we are in something like Avernis, or even times when we are located on the battlefield itself and must fight whether because we've set ourselves as bait to entice someone like Pazazu or because we were literally outplotted by Pazazu or someone. I just think, while Pathfinder is exceptionally addicting to me, the license itself could have more done with it than just another RPG game, and I like those.

Honestly a company like owlcat getting so much bigger (500 people) makes me more nervous than anything. The last thing I want is owlcat releasing a big AAA beautiful crpg with a bajillion mocapped cutscenes and perfectly synced mouthes to go along with the fully voiced dialogue all at the cost of an actual interesting very deep beautifully written game. I love the wrath of the righteous style. I would love for owlcat to make another pathfinder based off 1st edition not the new 2nd edition. DONT dumb down the game and as you said get rid of all the extra crap like kingdom management/crusade management stuff. It always takes from their games imo and ends up becoming a real chore and if you choose to automate it you miss out on cool stuff. Just make another fantastic crpg like wrath without that extra fluff. I hope if they go about voicing everything it does not mean the writing will suffer. (shorter less descriptive writing in order to fit in the need to voice everything) Frankly I couldn't care less whether its voiced or not. It can be nice I must say but I like to put voices on the characters myself too.

I think that OWLCAT GAMES just doesn't have the same fame and praise as, say, Larian for being a "Russian studio". Pure Russophobia. Because anyone who loves RPGs and especially cRPGs cannot argue that the two Pathfinders, even though they are not perfect, are masterpieces in the genre. Even Kingdom Management in Kingmaker is a lot of fun (much more than Crusades in WOTR imho), I don't know why people hate it so much. I hope we have more Pathfinders, a much better system than the one used in the wonderful BG3.

I don't think it's an unpopular opinion at all nowadays, but it was not something you could talk about much a few years back in the CRPG community. I think real time with pause was pretty much set to die in 2018 when Deadfire didn't sell as well as Obsidian expected, when it was supposed to have the perfected modernized version of that. It was highly contrasted with Original Sin 2 selling extremely well. Both Deadfire and Kingmaker added turn-based with updates, and WotR shipped with it from the get go. Now that (for good or bad) BG3 has set a new standard, I actually don't expect to see major releases with RTwP in the near future. It might be toast for good to be honest. It sucks for the people who really like that, but I've always liked turn-based better personally.

One of those is most likely the Rogue Trader - just like Pathfinder, they will be releasing numerous DLCs for it, so that's probably one of the four teams. Two I would say are more long-term projects in initial planning, strategy and pre-production phases and thus not needing a vast development team. So I would guess that the bulk of their development work will be: in 2024 / 2025 on RT DLCs and then on a brand new game; 2026+ Owlcat would switch to the two more long-term projects. The UE one I hope will be a properly made Dragon Age-like game with much deeper systems, taking over this genre from Bioware, which at this point is pretty much a lost cause. I think it is a smart move by Owlcat to build expertise with several game engines. They launched a lot of surveys after RT's release and the scope went much further than just RT feedback. Re: fully voiced games, I think Owlcat realised this when it popped up in half the Steam reviews for the Rogue Trader. Their first RT patch was massive and added a ton of voice-overs. They followed it recently with an even bigger patch and the game is by now pretty much fully voiced (dialogues, not flavour text and such, obviously).

Thinking that BG3 was so unbelievably successful because of the VA and cinematics is a big mistake. While the presentation of that game is top notch, and it's fully voice acted, those are just the icing on the cake. The bread and butter of that game is the ultra-reactive world. The rest is just icing on the cake. If you try to emulate what Larian is doing by just having the whole game voice acted and adding a shit-ton of cut-scenes, you'll bankrupt yourself. BG3's cinematics aren't traditional game cinematics, instead they flow in and out of the gameplay naturally, and that's what makes them so good. Traditional games have had had cinematic cut-scenes for years; it's not what set BG3 apart.

One of the only drawbacks to BG3 is that it has definitely made all the reading you have to do in other cRPGs take away from the experience. Voice acting and curtscenes are nice, but IMO having a good character creation (appearence) is way more important for mass appeal, also the main thing thats keeping their games for being more popular is the ruleset not the lack of cutscenes, their core audience love this but there is just way too many options for the average player to not feel completely lost at character creation, Larian hit the jackpot with their implementation of 5E, that managed to feel deep without being too complicated, Im not sure if Owlcat will be able to do this without alieneting their main audience but i really hope they find the succes they deserve.

Sadly I think baldur's gate 3 was the last of it's kind it's popularity is due to the fact that it was baldur's gate so a lot of people that played the 2 came back to gaming just for it and the fact that it was voiced and multiplayer, crpg just do not do that well since there is a lot of reading and casual gamers do not read anymore, they could voice everything but if they do it the budget skyrocket to a whole new level and they have a lot more to lose. I hope crpg will still live on but I am not optimistic about another AAA crpg being as sucessfull as baldur's gate 3 in my lifetime

Personally I want more CRPGs, not just from Owlcat but from all of the game devs. I definitely want more Pathfinder based ones. I would love to finally be able to play a Gunslinger, so maybe Skull and Shackles or Iron Gods. On a similar vein I would love to see a Starfinder CRPG. I have purchased and played Rogue Trader and I was a little disappointed with it in the end. They put in their Alignment paths but I think they really punished the Dogmatic and Heretical Paths. Heretical barely has any support in terms of recruitable NPCs while as Dogmatic I got shafted on a few quests that I couldnt finish simply because I chose Dogmatic dialogue options... They could have at least made the quests fail and thus drop off of my quest log! Make it stop hurting my poor OCD brain!! I will be very disappointed with Owlcat if none of the four games they are working on are CRPGs. It doesnt have to be all of them, just one will do.

Kingdom management from kingmaker however was hell, the timers are just too aggressive and random cards are a pain. It might have been better if it had a better tutorial to get through it, but it was too distracting from the main game. That being said, I would have loved for it to have worked. D&D 2e Birthright setting was a favorite of mine when I was a kid. I hope Owlcat continues to partner with Paizo to keep producing their content. Paizo AP’s are amazing source material and I would just love to keep playing them all. Personally, I don't think Baldur's Gate 3 brought a "new precedent" for CRPGs because of voice acting and conversation Systems. Hell. In what timeline does theses people live? It seems like suddently Baldur's Gate 3 made everyone forget that Dragon Age Origins, Neverwinter Nights 2, Knights of the Old republic and The Witcher series ever existed and suddenly Baldur's Gate 3 inventend cinematic dialogues in CRPGs with dialogue trees and voice acting. The Pathfinder games came after all those games that I mentioned and didn't have these expensive features and It was never their intention to compete with those games. Pathfinder Games, Pillars of Etternity and even the Divinity games from larian came after Dragon Age Origns. Some of those games came after The Witcher 3 which has the BEST conversation system in an RPG of all time, even BETTER than Baldur's Gate 3. It doen't have the amount of branching consequences of Baldur's Gate 3, but certainly has a better writing with more "show don't tell" storytelling (not rellying on a narrator) and less expositive dialogues. I certainly wouldn't compalin if their games were fully voice acted, like... Dicos Elisyum Director's Cut for instance. But saying that Baldur's Gate "created a new precedent" is bullshit.
