What is PAL || Primary Arts Of Language || IEW || Homeschool Curriculum
Today we're going to dive into what is the PAL program from IEW and how do we use them. This is actually two program in one and I am going to break down for you what each program includes and how you can use them separately or together.

It's so interesting how IEW doesn't assign grade, rather just give you a program where you focus on where your child is at rather than where they should be. Very thoughtful. Love how you broke this down! ❤️

Yes, it takes a little bit to get used to but I have grown to love that about this program.

This was VERY helpful. This is our first-year homeschooling through CC. We are 1/2 way through the year and my just turned 5-year-old has asked me to teach him how to write. He doesn't know how to read. Glad IEW has these two books that can be used together or separate.

This was the best review! Thank you. I would love to see an update later in the year of how it’s going. I’m doing AAR pre-reading with my 4/5 year old this year and I’ve contemplated doing PAL with her next year for kindergarten. I just wasn’t sure if I would only do the writing or pause AAR and do the whole program. My second grader is going to be doing AAR 3/AAS 1 and IEW people and places this year.

I have a 2nd,1st and kinder this next school year. This will be my first year homeschooling. Would I just print extra workbooks and do a group learning on this?!? If so oh my goodness how amazing.

I have a grade 1 and 3 and all i hafe done is handwriting without tears which has only consisted of printing. I am wondering if i shluld start them both with PAL?

Do you think this lays a better foundation for when they maybe start AAR? I have a hf daughter who has gotten through half of aar and happy cheetah but the progression is so fast half way through we've had to stop and re group. Trying to find something maybe to bridge the 2, thank you.

Yes I love AAR and Happy Cheetah but I definitely find that at the early years the progression can sometimes be to fast for some kids and I find that this is more gradual and offers many opportunities for review and practice through all of the games. I still plan to do AAR after finishing this program but I feel this will ease the little ones in better.

They tell you within the books when to pull out and use the other book.

Great review. Which package do you recommend... the PAL reading/writing premier package or the PAL complete package?

I just got the complete. The only difference is the premier comes with the workbooks printed and bound and I have a printer so printing myself wasn’t a big deal

I did TGATB Lang Arts Kinder with my daughter this year. She is doing well and reading, some words still need help. Would the reading be too easy? I don’t think the curriculum went very far in to rules though so im not sure how her foundation really is. We didn’t really do much in writing so it might be fun to do this writing program for 1st.

I have never used TGATB so I’m unsure what the transition would be like but I truly think this is great for writing and the reading program will most likely reinforce and expand on the past reading foundation.

I am curious why you selected this program over AAR and Happy Cheetah. We have PAL and AAR 1&2 and AAS 1-3. I’m considering Happy Cheetah because it’s short lessons and AAR even with a 20 minute timer was torture for my children. PAL lessons are long if all the daily schedule is followed.

So we will still do AAR after finishing this program but we won’t start at level 1 we will probably start at level 2 or 3 depending on where they are. The reason we are doing this is it fits better with my girls personalities. They love school and the hands on activities, stories, and extras where as my older kids just wanted to get through reading at this age. The lessons for PAL are not meant to be completed in one day so they don’t have to be super long but I know they will enjoy all the elements.

So true, i could have never done PAL with my oldest because he just wanted to get things learned as quick as possible but my girls LOVE school and the extras as well so they love the PAL 💗

Okay so I am def one of them parents who don’t do sight words. Does this program teach how to sound out the sight words or could o still do the reading and writing and supplement with my own phonics?

This teaches sight words AND phonics rules. It’s very unique in its approach and it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea which is why I love that you can totally use it along other resources!

This sounds really cool but I wonder if it's too demanding for the mom? I have 7 kids 1-13 years and I'm trying to divide my time between all of them and help them where they need it and many programs are too one on one focused.

This is time intensive on mom there is not a ton of independent pieces. That being said one lesson is not one day we set a timer and just do it for 20min. The games are very large family friendly I have the littles play with older kids so that’s nice.

@@LifeintheMundane how do you play games and do the lesson in 20 minutes? Also, does the 20 min include both writing and reading? I also have multiple kids and grades and find that the program is taking a hour to hour and a half to get both writing and reading done.

@@brettwiuff2266 we don’t finish a lesson in 20min we just work for 20min and get as far as we can and then pick up where we left off the next day. We do play review games outside if the 20min. The 20min is for new teaching. But that is just how we have done it.

My daughter is in second grade she is reading upper elementary school chapter books, her writing is at a 1st grade level . Would you still recommend pal?

You can utilize just the writing program if her reading is already where it need to be.

Would the PAL Writing (paired with AAR & AAS) be a good fit for a eight-year-old boy with ADHD and possibly dyslexia? Do you have to start with Part 1 or can you jump into Part 2?

This is a great program. If your looking mostly for help in spelling though I would recommend all about spelling bc that’s what this program uses for spelling
