Let’s take a minute to discuss the number one rule of Special Operations: Security is Rule # 1.
This is taught in Infantry basic training. They teach it in the Special Forces Qualification Course. They teach it at Ranger School. It is the guiding and primary rule of small unit tactics. Let’s learn how to apply this principle of security to our private lives, families, and businesses.

I seen this while vacationing in Cancun. I am at a resort pool bar wearing an old cheap Seiko dive watch and a guy next to me starting flexing with his shiny Omega Seamaster. I basically told him he shouldn't wear it outside the resort. He gave me some line that he was from Barcelona and that he knows more about Mexico than US tourist. Later that week, I found out that he rented a car to go to the ruins and he and his family got stopped and robbed at gunpoint. The adults were stripped down to their underwear and his family walked for miles until someone offered to help. Moral of the story, I don't wear my fancy watches and stuff on vacations, it just makes you a target.

I agree 100%, never wear something you aren't willing to give up or lose. I also believe in situational awareness-->keep your head on a swivel and pay attention to your surroundings and NOT your cell phone.

@@jumpercable20 Also noticed that if you are out and about, head on a swivel (though not to obvious or scared looking) makes a difference. Most bad guys aren't really that interested in someone that is paying attention. Course, sometimes that doesn't matter, shit happens. At least you see it coming and can act accordingly

As one who has been on the X, I think one of the best bits of advice I’ve ever heard was from Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) in Magnum Force when he said, “A man has to know his limitations”. I’ve been to Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti…and other crazy places. The world can be a dangerous place and it’s best to know that you aren’t the badass you may think you are. Move through the world with confidence and your head on a swivel. Be safe, but stay dangerous.

One of the greatest security threats to people is the inability to abstain. Temperance of character but also of needs and wishes. Absolutely correct on the smoking part. Years ago I had knucklehead neighbors that lived two doors down. I’m working the midnight shift and after exiting my back door I see the red glow of a cigarette in the pitch blackness. I couldn’t see who it was so I simply said, what’s up as a greeting. He responded with the same. In his mind he probably that I could see him clearly, but I couldn’t. I just wanted him to know that I knew someone was standing there.

I liked your "What If.." statement. When I became a Deputy Sheriff way back when, I did a lot of "What If" exercises in my head, over and over. Quite often the same ones. Read a lot about stuff, too. When I became a training officer, that was my go-to training talks with the newbies. What if this happens? Okay, if that happens what if? It is scenario rehearsal in your head. Training is good, so is muscle memory, however, mental preparedness is a force magnifier.

1. Security 2. Preparedness 3. Know your limitations 4. Know when and how to respond 5. Always keep asking questions " the what ifs" 6.situational awareness 7. TRUST Your Gut Just a side note ... when you can, always sit with your back against the wall where you can watch the entrance and locate the exits ... my wife knows how I sit and will point at the table that she knows I want. (She always goes first so I can watch over her) Also, I always ask for a steak knife even if I don't need it. I remember doing a job building an expansion for a mental health facility. Two of the big rules that we even had to sign forms that we acknowledged them was to not engage with the staff or any patients in any way from talking to even looking at them, just do your job. Second was to always secure our tools, that's when my military experience kicked in. The last thing that mental health facility needs is for a patient unexpectedly leaving the facility foe some reason, and there are construction tools lying around that could cause serious harm. With a notepad and pen, I kept track of our tools like an arms room so no unsecured shovels or cordless drills on my watch.

At our NCO Academy graduation CSM Littrell spoke about his platoon in Vietnam. He won the Medal of Honor but wouldn't talk abut that. He told a story about how he let his guard down while leading a patrol. All his guys were tired, wet, and hungry. They couldn't eat when they got back to the FOB until they cleaned their weapons. About 1 Klick from the base he started hearing guys breaking down their weapons and cleaning them. Knowing how hungry they were and how close to camp they were he said nothing. About .5 Klicks out they walked into an ambush. Everyone that had not broken down their weapons lived. Most died. He said that was his greatest failure and why he won't talk about his Medal of honor... Security is rule 1...
