Omg yes!!! It definitely makes me feel a hopeful hopelessness especially with feelings of love. It often makes me remember my young teenage freedom & depression, or the way I felt watching someone I loved slowly waste away from heroin while I was high on other drugs. Or the way I felt when I FINALLY met my muse & main inspiration... my musical idol who I've had the BIGGEST crush on for 21 years since I was 13... who was by then unfortunately married and more famous than before, therefore unattainable... we met on a quiet, cool breezy night after his concert. He gave me a very long, genuine hug that felt so healing and I wanted to stay there and be held forever. I looked up and realized we were standing under a church with a soft warm white glowing cross on the steeple, the stars glowing behind it... and that feeling... THAT is shoegaze. ❤

Shoegaze and dream pop are the main genres that inspired me to start learning the guitar. I wanted to make music in the range of those genres, but since I only played keyboard I found it hard to get the guitar sounds I wanted. Now I just have to get good enough to make music with it.

I love how diverse Shoegaze is. Can range from heavy riffs like Shovel by Hum, or beautiful soundscapes like Starting Over by LSD and the Search for God. Or a flawless mix like Mayonaise by Smashing Pumpkins. That euphoric feeling and the fuzzy tones in this kind of music is just like no other. Scratches my brain perfectly. Quick recommendation: Pancake by Swirlies! Shoegaze af

A while a go, a guy in Guitar Center and I got to talking when he overheard me playing random riffs on a bass, and he'd mentioned shoegaze. I wasn't sure about what that was, and he struggled to describe it but gave me a few band examples. This vid def helped explain some things for me. I have some homework to do. Thanks for posting this.

Im so happy to see Shoegaze becoming more popular with young people. I grew up on SF59 in the 90s and although their sound has changed over the years, their first two albums where shoegaze staples and expanded my musical interests.

Coaltar of the Deepers does shoegaze so perfectly for me. Their discography is so diverse, I never get sick of them. I love how they can make the saddest song feel so calming and relaxing by the end. Like for example one of their most popular songs "No Thank You" is about suicidal urges, but by the end he changes his mind and says "No Thank You" hence the title.

Adding to the bands you mentioned, I'll dearly recommend Soda Stereo's "Dynamo". They were an Argentinian new wave/pop rock band, but their 1992 album "Dynamo" became the first shoegaze/dreampop album ever created in Latin America, and got cult status thanks to its timeless sound. Other Latin American bands I can recommend are Christianes and Silabario from Chile; Silvania and Resplandor from Peru; Vaya Futuro and Car Crash Sisters from my country Mexico.

Great work, man. The thing that drew me to shoegaze after years living in the Blues and garage rock, is that it’s the first “cool” style I’ve heard in which there’s room for something other than pain and heartbreak. It’s like that reverse reverb’s tail acts as a light at the end of the tunnel, and the delay hammers the point home. Anyways, starry-eyed ramble here that’s essentially grateful for channels like this one, that help a fella discover fantastic noises to turn his guitar into something more :)

The term shoegazers was first coined by a music journalist reviewing Slowdive and was used perjoratively. The same journalist I believe described their music as sounding like a Cocteau Twins demo tape. I would add that all shoegaze bands, whether they know it or not owe a debt to the Cocteau Twins more than any other band.

Nice summary of shoe gaze! Stumbled pretty late on shoe gaze with LUSH being my favorite. It was Grunge in the 90-96 era that overshadowed this great type of new music ... But eventually I found the beauty in it. Grunge disappeared, Shoegaze remained, just like a nice stubborn weed in your yard you can't get rid of and remains there as a reminder of the resilience of things and the beauty it ultimately represents. Can't kill weed, Can't kill Shoegaze ... No matter what you do ... 🤗

I dig it. As an older gent, who was in my late teens and early 20's when the genres were new: I always thought the music press got it exactly backwards. The pop music that took texture and style from the Alternative, Indie "college rock" types of the mid to early 1980's should have been called "Grunge" while the bands who took moody introspection and self-effacing passive aggressive songwriting from those same bands should have been called "shoegaze". What I am saying is that a band like Swervedriver was taking texture and style choices from bands like Dinosaur, Sonic Youth, and JAMC, while a band like Alice in Chains was taking lyrical and structural choices from those same bands- so, since "grunge" is talking about texture, "shoegaze" connotes a withdrawn introversion- hence the switch. Great video in that I think you're exactly right to talk about the textural qualities.

@@pedalpartners in that case- another underexplored perspective is the relationship between "Goths" and "Psychedelic" music and how that got expressed and reacted to by the "Shoegazers" ( i.e. MBV started out sounding closer to the Cramps than Dino jr, and The Glove and The Siouxsie lp "A Kiss in the Dreamhouse" crossing over from Goth to Psyche)
@pedalpartners
@pedalpartners 4 жыл бұрын
@@mattvanmantgem8600 yeah, that's something i may touch on in a future video. as with most genres i find shoegaze is related to many other genres, such as the ones you mentioned & also post-rock. have a read of resonances: noise & contemporary music, i find it really interesting & touches on shoegaze in relation to psychedelia.

Great vid! Along with slowdive, mbv, chapterhouse, and ride, I’d highly recommend swervedriver, Catherine wheel, medicine, and kitchens of distinction - especially kitchen’s third album, the death of cool, which I think is easily one of the best albums out there. Also, never pass up on the chance for an mbv concert - they're amazing live too!

I'm from Argentina and i indirectly discovered this genre by listening to one album made by a famous local band: "Dynamo" by Soda Stereo, relased in 1992. This is one of the most celebrated bands from here and they were pretty big in the 80's for its New Wave/Post Punk style that had super poppy hooks. However in the 90's, they completely shift the style with "Cancion Animal" in 1990 and after that was a pretty big hit, they shifted into a more Shogazy/Dreampop oriented album, since his leader and main songwritter, Gustavo Cerati, was a big fan of the genre back when it was flourishing. Keep in mind nobody here knew about Shoegaze, so he basiclly could sneak up a record with those influences under the Argentinian scene without anyone noticed, making it sound fresh and unique. I've always loved that record but never could figured why until i discover the bands you mention here, that we all know and love, circa 2018 or somewere at that time. I recomend to give that album a listen, specially if you're a Ride fan (Cerati was clearly a big one) also sheck some of the Soda Stereo Live performances from the era as well!

The holy trilogy of the genre are Jesus and MaryChain, My Boody Valentine, and Cocteau Twins. Slowdive, Ride and others was the second generation. But Coteau Twins and many Songs and albums of Slowdive sounds more like Dream Pop. And The Velvet Underground was named the most influencial band for the genre in the 80s. Shoegaze is more noise and thrashy than Dreampop.

Y'all are using Dreampop and Shoegaze to mean different things. Back in the day ( 1988-92) they were a bit more interchangable. I used to call it our new psychedelic but that didn't catch on....
@irugirug
@irugirug 4 жыл бұрын
@@doitnowvideosyeah5841 In stricted order, only Jesus and marychain and Mbv were the trully shoegazers. Cocteau Twins sounded more dreampopier. Some bands like Slowdive or lush, have a mixed sound. New Psychedelics maybe were the telescopes, Spiritualized or Spacemen 3, and even groups like Stone Roses, Primal Scream and a few from the Madchester scene.
