It's refreshing to know that Slabs still exists!!! I use to read about it years ago in Maximum Rock n Roll and other punk zines I use to get. I saw a video where you thumbed a ride and had to get some cash from passers by in cars. You could get a stack of index cards and a few sharpies. Then just doodle on them and do your art on them when bored or to pass time. Won't take you long to do a whole stack of cards and you can give one to folks who flip ya some scratch. Helps your karma, gets your art out there(your name too if you sign it) and people can't say your just bumming money because your technically selling art cards. If you want to get real creative glue two together and make the back with a line down the middle and place for a stamp and they become post cards. Best wishes, N8knox

Cornelius Vango I've been doing a style of sharpie art on index cards all the way up to poster board sizes. They're real trippy and started out as head cards to look at on acid or other fun stuff. Now people at tattoo shops pay me $15-$25 a piece for them. But I just give most of them away especially the smaller index size. Hope I'm in a position to get out to slabs one day😊.

These types of places and living are in EVERY city in the US. Just some are bigger then others. The only way these communities survive is people helping each other- the way it should be. And im fascinated on how the are using the trash to make art and wonderful pieces!! Everybody i knew would just leave the trash and find another spot. The more people, the more trash so good for u guys for utilizing whatchu got.

How do they cope with the heat in the summer? Im pretty sure they probably have problems with coyotes trying to eat the pets?! Theres always SOMETHING going on im sure. i used to have friends that would camo in the riverbottoms in San Diego...i tried it too but i preferref sleeping in friends garafes or on their couch. So i know how it is. Slab City is just a much bigger realm of it. Reminds me of Mad Max- Road Warrior. I used to recycle and dumsterdive for beer money and whatever i could find...i thought it was great fun....till i found my place in the real world and quit all my addictions. Im not banging it, its alot of fun and experience.

It now, I believe, actually belongs to the California teachers union. How that happened, I'm not sure. But regardless, counties have ordinances about all manner of things that take place anywhere that is not within a city ordinance, such as selling, parades, music performances, etc. May not be an enforced law about these people living there, but there still might be county ordinance about public performances,etc.

I have been doing a great deal of research. It is public use land. I BELIEVE you are some what right as I have heard that and read that. I have also read that the have tried to have these board of governors before like they have now for salvation mountain who have tried to work with ca, but ca doesn't want to clean up these waste dump site. The cost is astronomical. It has been demeaned uninhabitable, they were going to even take down salvation mountain at one point. The history is interesting. Really. The place has value only to those who are there at any given time and those who can now view remotely. It's the flipping desert. It's hotter then hell certain times. God bless.

sema_seyedi@csumb.edu Seyedi I know the area. I would not be caught dead there in the summer time - you would have to be completely nocturnal. It is up in the 110's all summer long. But, very pleasant in the winter. It's an interesting phenomenon that at one point it was suggested that the country privatize a large number of former military bases and just give them away to municipalities for their use. But the contamination on these sites, which all go back prior to WWII when nobody cared about contamination, is so enormous that nobody can afford to take the land for free. I still think though some day they are going to clean out the human beings here. Sooner or later, they always do.
@caligirlsns
@caligirlsns 9 жыл бұрын
JustVinnyBlues I hear you. They gave fort Ord and a few others to university. I lived there super funded waste dump sites they call them. I was there 1997 they claimed it was safe. Not so. I am permanently sick and so is my son. He was 8 when I took him. I didn't know they were mining the lead out of the sand right down wind of us every day for years. Its clearly stated that slab city is an EXPERIMENT AND LYNN BRIGHT knows that. She is on video talking about THAT. I spent some time at slab city in 2012. I enjoyed the people and the life style...but I cannot be there full time...it was a health issue for me.

It's not all sunshine and rainbows, there are nasty people out here, and you can easily get into it with the wrong folks. Like Connie was saying "half hippie, half wild west" and you can get shot at, and there's a lot of other videos you can find online that show people's trailers getting burnt down. But I decided to focus on a different side. Like I tell folks, it is what you make it. Nobody is going to keep you out of trouble but you.

Yes, used in one's personal situation I think it is better than any synthetic. I have never taken them but the results tell me they do much more harm than good. I have to say if it helps, proceed. I have grown, literally, and I have seen what can happen to some people, I remember hunting and camping trips where we had people literally turn into zombies, the rest of us were out hiking or hunting. So yes people react differently especially with high-grade. Peace to you and good holidays.

I sell my art and crafts. You can see me doing that in my other video- Your Van-tasy Awaits You. Other people do other things, sell scrap, fix stuff, build things, work for other people, work in town, collect recyclables, haul trash for others, but most people would rather make trades with eachother and barter what they have for what they need. I've had the same ten dollar bill in an envelope for this whole month. I don't use money very often, just for obtaining parts for my van and gas and food. This way of living is actually pretty common around the world. It just seems weird because it's not in a foreign country.
