This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In a world of Smartphones and Smart Cars. What does Smart really mean?
Chris Kennedy is the father of four young children and the husband to an amazing woman. When not busy as a husband and father he is the Superintendent of Schools with the West Vancouver School District. Chris is a passionate teacher and strong advocate for public education.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

In my opinion, intelligence is subdivided into three categories: problem-solving skills, understanding, and efficiency. Although it is possible to increase your intelligence, some people are innately "smarter" than others.

I think intelligent and smart are two different things as intelligent is made from the word "intel" which means knowledge so intelligent means a person with knowledge and smart means rational thinking, problem solving skills etc.

Patrick .M Well yeah I also wanted to convey the difference between smart and wise. While one you kinda have from the get go. Wisdom can only be gained through experience. There’s knowing and then there’s being. You only can understand that after a significant amount of time. You think children teenagers and even some adults know or even try accepting the fact “you are going to die”. And that fact right there is a cornerstone of wisdom. Ya know “don’t make the mistakes I made” “time is the only real currency you have” etc etc. Wisdom is only gain during the aftermath. If only we knew what we would know after.

But wouldn’t it not matter if you still don’t know which conclusion is correct? what’s the difference between coming up with 2 and coming up with 20 but not knowing what the correct outcome is?

Smart is the concept of set intelligence that cannot be changed only altered to you current or certain situation. Smart is the theory of someone being able to do things better then someone because they have a higher intelligence. However this isn’t true because the term smart doesn’t mean anything to me. Take Stephan hawking. He was challenged in more ways then one but made it work. Take Einstein who doesn’t even have the iq that the “geniuses” have or had. Take every single human on the planet: it’s not a bad thing to be born being in a better situation to where it’s just easier for you to understand things. It’s also not bad being born in a lesser situation where’s it is harder to understand things. It matters what you do to change it that doesn’t make you smart. That makes you adaptable. That makes you above “average”. That makes you able to succeed to where you want to succeed. I may be just a person and I do have my limits but I am the whole makes those limits. I am the one who tells myself I can or can’t do something (and I’m not talking about actual impossible things.) Also it’s not bad to give yourself these limits. But it is good to try at least try and push through them. This isn’t being smart. This is being the best version of you. Or at least something better. That is what I think “smart” means and is. Thank you for reading.

What if, Being smart is just a word to blend us into society? Just accept it, it is simply there for the creation of competition and other capitalist interests. There is no "smart" people. We are all just people, dear friends, being smart is to follow your heart!

I don’t think we ever really mean it when we call people smart. It’s just a word. IMAO, we call people smart as you would call *just any ol’ random stranger* in your environment smart (e.g., a guy buying milk or a woman walking a dog, etc). I mean, I know a senior who’s going to turn twenty this May, and he’s graduating that month. Of course, he should’ve graduated two years ago, at 18, the proper age. He said he had a speech delay in preschool and some years of homeschooling, bringing him down to the eight grade when he returned to an actual school (age 15). He said he has ASD and a learning disability that limits and delays his general understanding. Can’t tell you how many times he asked questions in classes or needed clarification. He was not good at biology or chemistry, and always need help in setting up the experiments for the former and had to take his own private, simpler assignments for the latter in Special Ed, because everything in our Chem class was too tough for him. Sure, he works very hard, but come on, hard work _alone_ does not make you bright. Hard work *and* _natural brain skills_ make you bright, together. Some students are smart but lazy, some are smart and hard working, and some are hard working but…well, that’s exactly what this guy is, if you know what I mean. A few teachers who admired his hard working nature said he was very smart, and that is _precisely_ my point: we call anyone smart just for the heck of it, whether it’s true or not. This guy is one of the main reasons I do not believe “smart” is sincerely or correctly said when we use the word about certain people. Meet him, and you'll understand.
