Stimming is something our 7 year old autistic daughter does very frequently. Sometimes it can take some time to get through her stims. This video is a great example of that and we want to ensure we never discourage her from stimming unless is causes harm. #autism #weefam
It is time for our Chihuahua's much needed knee surgery.
Stimming: Behavior consisting of repetitive actions or movements of a type that may be displayed by people with developmental disorders, most typically autistic spectrum disorders

I’m 37 and learning how I stim and that it’s okay to stim saved my life. I spent my life being misdiagnosed and thrown around to different doctors, I was hospitalized in a psych hospital 5 times as an adult because of self injury to the point of needing stitches every time and suicidal ideation. I knew I felt different and that I felt bad and that so many things that other people did easily made no sense to me and that nothing they suggested or medicated me with made it any better. I was even coerced into getting ECT at one point which ended up traumatizing me beyond belief, When I turned 29 I was finally diagnosed correctly as Autism Spectrum Disorder 2 and C-PTSD. I found stimming and was able to get out all of my bad feelings and overwhelming feelings through a variety of physical and vocal stims . I finally started to get the help I needed so badly. I use a speech tablet for when I become overwhelmed and cannot communicate whereas before I would just agree with whatever someone was saying so they would leave me alone. Thanks to stimming I have not injured myself in 7 years. I now have many outlets to control my feelings and find balance in the world. I love that you support Braylee in her stimming because it is so so very important. ❤️❤️

Thank you for sharing your experience ❤️ I am sorry that you had all those struggles and went so long without proper help that you needed. I am also very glad that you now have appropriate diagnosis and are able to so greatly help yourself by stimming and being able to communicate what you really want and need even when overwhelmed. I think having the right tools and information makes SO much difference and I’m very happy to hear that your life has gotten better. 7 years is an incredible accomplishment and I hope that you are so proud of yourself for that!!! ❤️❤️❤️

when she reacted when Stacey said that Carlos was going to be owie and was going to hurt for a bit. She knew... She is so smart. And her repeating is getting so much better. She said Knees and Owie so clearly, and even fixed, it might have taken a minute but I could have sworn she said a close word to that word.

I love that you folks are supportive of Braylee’s stimming! For me stimming is really important. If I’m upset or overwhelmed it can help me to be calm and process stuff. Like if I’m angry it can help me cope with that emotion and be able to figure out what’s wrong and how to deal with it. It helps me not get so overwhelmed by the world in general. It also helps me to focus on schoolwork. My favourite thing about stimming is that it makes me happy, and when I’m already happy it makes me even happier!

Having been an assistant teacher for many years in the Autism department, I wish I could go back and do it again, using many of the methods you use. I also wish we could have had more parents like you. You approach her life and disability with foresight, common sense, and most of all Love 💕 Bravo. Can’t wait to see Carlos when he comes home.

it makes me so happy to see kids like braylee grow up with parents who are so adamantly positive about stimming. as someone who grew up being told it was annoying, and still gets that comment on the regular, it just warms my heart to see kids just... not deal with that. and the way yall handle it too is just above and beyond what should be expected of you. you go out of your way to wait for her to finish any quirky habits, compulsions, stims, etc. and just move on with your day. its so refreshing to see parents like this. also, i feel yalls reaction to dropping off carl. i SOBBED when i dropped my dog off for the same surgery, even tho i knew it was low risk and everything. i was alright until she started yelping and fighting the vet to get back to me... then i lost it. i just cant handle seeing her freak out like that. she was so scared and all i wanted to do was explain to her what was going on :(
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 4 жыл бұрын
We have seen so much how important stimming is for her and wouldn’t take that away. It’s her way to express and handle emotions and stimuli and honestly her stims are really pretty pleasant so we think she’s cute doing them. We try to respect her stims. It’s just hard to not know and have them away because they’re always at your home. He doesn’t love the vet but he doesn’t whine or bark so it’s a bit easier. It’s just hard to leave a pet you love with someone else knowing they’re scared.

Hi guys👨👧🙆🐕🐈😼 So sorry to see Carlos having to go for surgery 😢 We just had Kingston in for surgery on the 16th, then the next day Kaia had diarrhea so we wondered if Kingston brought a virus home....had her to the vet again today for testing and had to leave her 1.5 hours .She turned and looked out the window at me with the saddest face as the vet assistant took her and I cried as she left so sad and confused 😢 Now she's on antibiotics plus prebiotics plus we are waiting for bloodwork results to come back....scary! So I can so relate to you all feeling sad about having to leave Carlos.I'm praying that he has a speedy recovery 🙏I've said it before and I'll say it again ....I believe Braylee's receptive language is much higher than many people may think it is.I see a brilliant little mind there.Many times I don't think our kids show all that they know or can do during testing, so the doctors can only speculate.They can guess potential outcomes for people with ASD , but no one will truly know someone's future potential until it actually unfolds, day by week by month by year😀Braylee has a lot of skills that many kids I've worked with on the spectrum do not .Has anyone suggested the possibility of selective mutism ? It's a very real thing that many people struggle with and I've known several individuals who had ASD with apraxia and anxiety and it took many years for specialists to realize that selective mutism was a large part of the non verbal component .Braylee seems so very bright and appears to be a deep thinker, but can't express all of her thoughts , feelings, anxiety as she might want to. And she showed empathy for her doggie having an ouchie.What a sweet, beautiful soul 💖 The other night I actually had a long dream about her and she was around 9 or 10.She was typing long, complex sentences into a communication device and everyone was astounded by the things she was typing as they showed such high intelligence by the vocabulary and sentence structure she typed .I was saying in the dream " I'm not at all surprised! I KNEW she was a little genius all along!"😂

It makes my eye's tear jus thinking about him but U knw how it is, their NOT JUS dog's their our BEST friend's and family 💖💯 Bare was soo very smart an naturally stayed with my daughter no matter where an what she was doing. My daughter was 5 when Bare came on the scene an it was at a time my daughter NEEDED him the most. Bare was a mixed breed Rottweiler/ Pittbull so he was a good 80 lb dog. But 1 of the smartest gentelest an most watchful dog I have EVER knwn. My daughter will be 22 in August an SHE STILL is bothered by Bare NOT being here still. He passed mid July an I jus Thank God I was the 1 who found him that afternoon. Like I said HE was 1 of the BEST and he was my daughter's 1st best friend 💖 today we still have MY boy Payton Lee and yes he is named after Payton Manning lol seems he was born the last time Payton took Denver to the Superbowl an WON!! Lol Payton is a 120+ lb dog an looks dead on his Daddy he is gonna be 7 this yr but he REALLY helps with missing Bare cuz even THO Payton is alot bigger they had ALOT of similarities even the very SAME color 💖 I pray Carlos has a good speedy recovery an that he is able to continue to run an play with his B 💖💖💯💯 much love frm FL!! An being is Florida where it's hotter then H**l out I HOPE UR RITE DAVE AN THAT SUMMER IS ALMOST OVER!! WE LIVE FOR DEC- MARCH HERE!! Lol cuz IF WE do get a break in the hot humid weather it'll be during THOSE month's!! I hope U all have a great Friday!! It's weekend EVE as we say in our house!! With ADHD emotions tend to be big. When you suddenly feel so happy that it almost hurts being able to flap your hands and giggle helps release some of that emotion. It's like how talking about something and getting it out there can help you feel better. And sometimes it's just nice to click your tongue or squeeze your hands.

Stimming is very important, I always stimed and still do, when I was a kid I was always stopped from doing it, I would loose it, I would throw myself on the floor face down and just screamed, I still remember how frustrating it was for me and my mom just didn’t know how to handle it, so she would just walk away. I can’t be hard on her because at that time there was no autism awareness at all, all the doctor told my mom was that I would outgrow it. I’m so happy your little girl is allowed to stim, I feel it’s a part of who she is just the way it’s a part of me, and that is ok. I also have twin boys on the spectrum and have sensory processing disorder, ocd and anxiety. Love you guys, you both are awesome parents👍👍👍👍

Hi. You are one of my favourite channels! I am autistic myself and have been trying to stim more especially in public and stop masking but its hard sometimes. I love seeing braylee stim. Stimming helps regulate the senses, helps 'revent my meltdowns as well as sensory overload and allows me to express my emotions without speaking and also its calming and comforting especially when I'm stressed. Also sometimes it just feels good. I'm so glad you encourage braylee to stim. Autistic people need to stim for their mental and physical health and wellbeing as well everyone stims even neurotypicals and people who are not autistic but are neurodivergent in other ways. Autistic people just tend to stim more obviously but again thats individual. Stimming is an incredibly personal experience so when you see her stimming know your getting a glimpse into one of the most intimate parts of her life. The fact that she so happily shares that with you is so fantastic! So happy to see this video. Hope Carlos does okay, he is in my thoughts. Be well, and stay safe ❤❤❤💕💕💕💕👍😍😍😍👍👍👍😊😊😊😊🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️

I’m glad that you’re allowing yourself to stim more publicly and I hope that it’s helping you. I know I’ve read many say they mask in public too. We know how beneficial it is for her to stim and love that she feels free enough to just be herself and express her emotions and regulate with her stims. She’s a stimmy kid and we wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s such a large part of what makes her Braylee. We love her happy flapping hands and she gets lots of joy when we join in with her from time to time and gets excited that we encourage her. ❤️ Thank you! @@TheWeeFamily thank you so much! I have a question. I know braylee likes the water and sometimes uses a iPad/tablet for communication. How do you keep her devices safe around the water? I feel like it would be so helpful for me to be able to have my phone with me while swimming connected to a waterproof speaker. Not only for communication but music as well. I embrace n encourage my daughter's stims. She has a lot of repetitive behaviors n she yells n runs around almost constantly. Lately she's started closing one eye (winking), putting her arm in front of her face when looking at certain things n she used to clap, flail her arms n squint. The only ones I discourage are chewing on/biting her hair n sometimes when she yells really loud for a while I ask her to quiet down some just for a minute if someone's speaking, when her teacher is talking on virtual class n our microphone is on or sometimes at the store. Usually only if they're extremely disruptive or possibly harmful to herself or others. Like when she used to bite herself or pick at cuts,scabs n bug bites.

It’s important to release pent up energy and help relieve anxiety of change. Routine helps and stims may block flow for some but help others through. Stims can be tic like and not control. As get older work on making stims help but I try to blend them in as much as possible so I don’t get stares and make myself feel self conscience for something I need to do. As I got older I can not cognitively hold them to more appropriate locations and times like in a bathroom stall or car ...

We have seen times when Braylee just can’t stop some stims. I really wish it was more normalized because so many people benefit and need to stim but there’s the fear of judgement which I know does happen. 😔 I’ve heard some people say that suppressing can also cause them harm in some way. We will keep talking about it and doing what we can to make any contribution to change it. I want Braylee to feel comfortable being/expressing and regulating herself.

Last year I got diagnosed at 52. My main one when I'm nervous or severe anxiety I rock back and forth. For many years before my diagnosis my Mom ( who I believe is on the Spectrum) would say, You don't have a baby in your arms. Stop rocking. And another stim is shaking my legs. I get told to stop. Now I understand why I'm so angry. Because they stopped my stim. Thank you for teaching me more about me. Prayers for Carlos. Big Hugs for Stacey.

after being told at the start of this year i probably have autism and i'm now waiting for a diagnosis, i am learning to stim, i have always wiggled my leg and rocked, i stim at home more than anywhere and it has really helped my anxiety, if i wake up feeling anxious i now stim and then sleep through the night, i am scared to stim in public and a few times i have got overwhelmed and ended up so depressed and crying when i got back to the car, i am working on being ok to stim in public but it's hard because i sometimes feel this overwhelming pressure to fit in and not be noticed and that makes me really depressed and unhappy because i know i need to stim and i know it helps me but i'm so scared of being judged or people looking at me

I stim but coz I didn't now I had asd and spd till I was an adult I supressed them for years, when the world gets too loud (and not just actual volume) it helps to stim to refocus your brain and get it pointing in the right place. The best way I can describe it is something things are overwhelming but the worst is then things are too bright and really busy environments make my brain itch. Let your angel stim. ❤️🧡❤️🧡

I had a chihuahua. The best thing I could tell you, is that they're amazing dogs had if I can have another Chihuahua I would be so happy. My chihuahua was really smart, unfortunately I had to give her away because I had to move and couldn't keep her. She was only 3 years old when I had to let her go. She was able to pee and poop on command, she jumped what I asked, she barked when I asked her to talk because she normally was really quiet, of course she knew sit and lay down, she was also bilingual and she knew English and Russian. She got a lot of exercise because she loved to run. She was socialized with other dogs and cats and people and was a big Chihuahua though, she wasn't fat like yours, but was big she was 8 lb. Her dad was 3lb and the mom was 12 lb. So I guess it's good that she's somewhere in the middle. I always monitored and measured out her food, I did give her treats for doing things I want her to do. A lot of people are scared of chihuahuas, they just don't understand how amazing they are. One of my favorite things about her is that she always cuddled with me at night under the blankets. They're so affectionate and love to snuggle their owners.

Yes, stimming is Important, for the young this is their "Special interest", this is their safe place, what we do to calm ourselves, relaxing actions, etc. Later on when we grow, this turns into our special interest, obsessions, etc. so when we do them its NOT a MELTDOWN, this is a safe thing, we need a quiet place, and SPACE we are overloaded and this is how we show others we need to calm down because we are BECOMING overloaded, not there yet, but close enough to worry us. even as adults, in a chair or bar stool, we may kick our legs, etc, this is a similar thing, moving to music ( hands, clapping, slapping a table, etc.), humming, MUSIC is also a form of 'Pattern following' this is a routine, we know songs, what's coming from the first couple of notes, also the melody calms us, and is a regulator of our emotions, how we prepare for bed, etc.
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 4 жыл бұрын
Stimming is how Braylee avoids meltdowns herself by regulating and expressing her overwhelming emotions. We are so impressed with her ability to self regulate often. When she was younger we knew she sang all the time and hummed (never stopped it from happening) but didn’t realize right away that she was vocal stimming. We see her seek a lot of pressure when she’s disregulated and flap when she’s super happy. I think it’s amazing that there are those strategies that are so helpful for her and ,any others and that there’s such a variety of possible things that are considered stimming as well.

For me, stimming is incredibly important, as it keeps me closer to my default in terms of mood. It helps me if I'm overstimulated to distract me, it helps me if I'm understimulated to fill the uncomfortable absence of visual, auditory and just sensory stimuli. And it helps me if I'm feeling anxious, to reduce my levels and help me function better and prevent shutdowns and meltdowns.
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 4 жыл бұрын
Regulating emotions can be hard for Braylee and I think her stims really help her stay away from the super high and low emotions that can cause her meltdowns. I never thought of it in the sense of using stims to add to some missing stimuli like visual and auditory. We knows she seeks pressure which makes sense but that’s a good point that she may be looking for other input too, not just using them expressively but also adding those types of stimuli. Great info, thank you for sharing that!
