Our autistic girl had a really bad day. It was the worst in recent memory. We got through the meltdowns and tantrums alright. Kept yesterday in the past, current day in the positive, and the future still has good things to look forward to. #autism #weefam

My husband really struggles with public meltdowns. Our daughter is verbal, though there are delays and she is a selective mute. She hates the way her body feels in a meltdown and so her script is usually "no daddy/mummy I'm scared, I'm too scared" and she is...any additional stimulus at this point will be completely overwhelming, eye contact, speech, touch is simply too much to process at that point for her. She will fight tooth and nail against it and he's worried that her meltdown will be misinterpreted and people may assume he's an abusive parent. I've given him a script for passers-by, but he feels it's worse because he's a man. I have Aspergers myself, so I get what she is going through and am more confident handling things in public. He has pretty much reduced solo public parenting to visiting the park/playground while I attend a monthly appointment. A great support in all other ways this is his main "autism hangup". It is sad that society has forced this wonderful, caring father to such a level 😔

I can definitely see that being difficult because of perception. 😞 sometimes it is hard but we just have to do it and try not to worry about what others think. He sounds like a good dad and people that don’t understand Autism and our lives as parents and families shouldn’t pass judgement. We try to not let it restrict us from going out but I completely understand why he would feel like that. There are some things that David does better than I and vice versa. If you found what works for your family, that’s great!! ❤️❤️

I have autism and I want to say I love your videos there needs to be more autism understanding in the world and more education on it. It’s great that you document your daily life the ups and the downs. I had a meltdown at work and they thought I was overreacting it was a sensory trigger. Autism i feel isn’t understood by many but your videos educate and one person at a time there will be more understanding and support. You guys are awesome 😎

Thank you and we definitely agree there needs to be more understanding. She doesn’t have many meltdowns typically, so we are fortunate, but we know it’s hard on her too. That’s hard if the workplace doesn’t understand. All we can keep doing is trying!

I love it when you said, “braylee say, ‘mtkamtkamtka!’” It’s a reminder that while yes it is important that she be able to communicate with the world in a way they can understand, it is also important that people communicate to her in the way she understands and prefers!

I love you guys and Braylee kinda reminds me of me when I was younger. I've written poems about what it's like being autistic and maybe it'll raise awareness. And another misconception/myth is that autism is caused by vaccines.

I know. Someone brought up a good point that made sense to me. The myth that vaccines cause autism is perpetuated because it's alot if autistic children start to show signs around 2 or so n that happens to be an age that they receive a large amount of vaccines. It's just a coincidence n u usually can't tell when they're babies because they don't really talk yet. My daughter showed no signs whatsoever til 2/2.5.

I wonder if she would like gestures and sign language? I absolutely love gesturing and signing, it just adds another layer of communication to interactions. That was really random, but I that would be so cute to see Braylee gesturing haha 😊

It’s taken me a long time to understand people who say that autism is not a bad thing or even that they see their autism as a good thing because I feel like I have suffered a lot with it but I think the truth is that it’s the way people have acted and treated me that has hurt me and made life hard for me, not actually the autism. It’s people who have made me feel broken. If people had understood and accepted me and also not taken advantage of the way I am then I think I would see my autism more positively. This is only the second of your videos I have watched but from the way your attitude seems to be I think Braylee will be one of the people who grows up to see her autism as a positive thing and I’m glad for that.
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 4 жыл бұрын
You are also allowed to feel that way too. It hurts my heart that others have made you feel that way about yourself/autism. Everyone has different experiences and it’s not uncommon for people to have bad ones unfortunately. I hope that you find people who accept and appreciate you and that things get better. There is always time. ❤️ I appreciate your kind words. We really want Braylee to grow up knowing all the positives so that if others try to bring her down, they wont be able to because we have supported her, accepted her and made her feel big enough so that people can’t make her feel small or broken. We believe that autism may make her different but she is not any less important or valuable as anyone else.

I like how simply you explained autism! I also like how all the comments on your video are positive 😊 it’s helping me get over a bad memory of when I was starting to understand autism, before I never knew what it was besides like a puzzle (lol), but then I started to get interested in child development and ended up meeting a distant family member who is autistic, also realized that my dad’s family friend was autistic (I felt so bad because everyone is so mean to him, he’s just like a huge joke to everyone but luckily it doesn’t phase him at all 😅) he’s almost in his 60’s and his parents help him, he’s doing fine! I respect Him a lot more now that I understand him. But the thing is, when I thought I was starting to get it, I commented on a KZfaq video to share what I was seeing (I felt like it fit right in with the conversation), but unfortunately someone with autism really raked me against the coals. They showed no mercy and I felt horrible, although I have no idea of what was wrong that I said ): I haven’t talked about autism since then, even my mom is always trying to say our family member is not autistic, and I just stay quiet. I feel like I know absolutely nothing after that experience. Although, I don’t know what was wrong with what I said 😅 This will probably be the most I talk about autism again. Hopefully it didn’t offend anyone 😭 but I felt like I needed to get that off my chest. I’m sure that person didn’t mean to be mean? Maybe they were just having a bad day. Or maybe I am really stupid when it comes to autism 😅 but I do feel like I’m understanding it, I often think that I am autistic given my behaviors and how easily I relate to others with it But seeing what a great community you have here makes me feel comfortable and your family is so sweet! ❤ and if you keep making these videos, no one will have to talk about, we’ll just understand it haha

I truly understand what you're going through. I have lived with autism for about 46 years. At work, Monday, I had both a meltdown, and an anxiety attack because my job involves a carryout with heavy items like bed frames, TVs, etc. I am mainly a cart pusher and maintenance. Like I said, Walmart is pretty much the only store to hang out at. Plus, a large number of people are 50+ and depend on so much. In most cases, we never have another cart pusher staying long enlugh to help out. One is out due to surgery, another is gone by the time I get there. I think they're aware of autism at where I work. The Store Manager is very helpful, too. She said " You are only one person, Hershal, so do only what you can." I am mostly furious with people in my town who think you owe them everything, and they never appreciate it, a few do. All I could ever want is more businesses to pop up sooner or later now that some people are moving here from California, they would want many businesses, too. Anxiety attacks and meltdowns are very normal responses to stress levels related to autism.

I hope that they get more businesses there too for you! Anxiety attacks and meltdowns are common with Autism but never any fun to have. It makes a difference having someone supportive like your manager though. Hope the rest of your week has been good!

What an awesome video! Ur beautiful girl isn’t broken!!! I TOTALLY agree-it’s just that some of us have brains that work differently-we need as a community to accept, embrace and love those that “are different”! I was bullied SO much as a child because my brain worked differently-we can have an amazing, wonderful world when we all work together, complementing eachother’s strengths & weaknesses-not anyone has all the answers-but when we work together, we are a force to be reckoned with!

Hi :) I am a new viewer to your channel but I have been sticking around because your little Braylee is similar in her mannerisms to my youngest daughter, Jasmine. Jasmine was diagnosed with Autism in Nov 2018. She is about to turn 4 this April 2nd. National Autism awareness day is her birthday, Ironically, lol. I just wanted to say thank you for making these videos. They are really helpful. My husband works long hours and I have the kids mostly alone for large portions of the day and being able to relate to another adult in the same shoes is just... honestly comforting. I've caught myself wondering more then once about how the future will be but... it's definitely healthier to be more present to the current moment because there is so much more room for anxiety over the unknown. Big hugs! You guys are awesome parents and Braylee is so sweet!

Jasmine is such a pretty name. How fitting for her birthday to fall on that day as well! I’m glad that we can help in any small way. I know the feeling of being alone because I was a stay at hone mom from the time Braylee was 18 months old to 3. The future is big and daunting. We couldn’t have imagined that our future would look like it does even to this point. The future isn’t nearly as scary anymore because we know it’ll be alright no matter what the situation is. Thanks for being here and sharing about yourself and family! ❤️❤️

I’m 32 and autistic, and I understand what you’re trying to say by “not suffering,” but I disagree at the same time. I am in pain 24/7, but it’s because of my environment not my autism. I hope that makes sense. I don’t want a cure either. I also have a daughter who’s autistic and if you took away our autism we wouldn’t even be the same people. So I’m not putting autism down as an enemy or something. It’s not a disease, like you said, it’s something that defines me. It’s hard to find a balance between the extremes of “autism is so horrible and we need to fight the autism” and “autism is no big deal.” While I wouldn’t trade my autism for being NT, I still don’t want my struggles downplayed. The world is really hard for people like me. Really really hard. Sometimes I’m sad that my daughter is going to have the same trouble I had growing up, and I have no clue how I’m going to help her through life stages that caused trauma for me. It’s terrifying. But I still wouldn’t change it. I just want people to understand that yes, it is actually very painful at times. For some more than others. I hope that made sense.

Thank you so much for this topic guys! The meltdowns and obsessive behaviors is what made me realize my Ari has over-sensory issues. It's usually when something doesn't go the way she thinks it should that she'll have a meltdown, so I never know when to expect one, and she gets violent toward me during them like kicking and hitting, but she's getting better at learning to work through it if something doesn't go her way. I went from worrying that I had a bad kid, to learning how to help her get through it, so thanks! She turned 6 today and I was brave enough to have her neighborhood friend over, and she did so great! I'm learning that it's ok to get her out and do things, and not to be worried if we might have one bad moment 😊

Hi Stacey I wanted to know how long did it take braylee to buckle herself in into the car seat that’s what’s causing major meltdowns especially now that he’s going to a different school n they don’t allow us to get off the vehicle to buckle our child in 😣....and well said David👍🏼
@TheWeeFamily

How long did it take for her to learn, or how long does she take to buckle up? I’ll answer both 😂 She just started buckling herself in this past year, maybe even 6 months mostly. She’s been able to do the chest clip but she didn’t have the strength to get the buckles at the bottom. In the bus she just has an across the lap and because they’re old they do stick so we help her. Time wise, it takes her maybe 2-3 minutes depending on if she requires reminders or isn’t paying attention.

I could use some help. My 9 year old has adhd. I have add it is genetic. My 2 year old has temper tantrums because she doesnt know how to regulate her emotions yet. What do I do when she does that?? Do I leave her where she is and just wait until she stops. Can I go into another room because I cant handle the screaming
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 4 жыл бұрын
I’d work on tools to help your 2 year old with regulating emotions (I’m not sure what specific strategies would help) but with her being so young the temper tantrums are typical for the age so I can’t say that would stop them. But during them we usually make sure Braylee is safe and let her calm down. Sometimes this means not having us in the same room, sometimes we stay with her but don’t interact just so we can monitor her. If you can’t handle the screaming (it can be a a lot sometimes) then I’d suggest making sure she is safe and walking away for a breather, in the similar way you would with a baby just to recenter, calm down, etc. hope that helps.
@TheAwetist802
@TheAwetist802 4 жыл бұрын
Charmaine, if I may add something to the great advice that The Wee Family has given? With your 2 year old, there may be something internal that is causing the temper tantrum: sensory overload, feeling scared or anxious, etc. This happens with both Autistic children AND Neurotypical children. One technique that can work for calming a temper tantrum, even though it seems totally counter-intuitive, is to embrace your child and hold them snuggly. This is something to try if your child is generally ok with being touched. When the tantrum starts, get a soft blanket or other comforting fabric. Wrap it around the child if you can manage it (tantrums are wiggly and can be physically aggressive, I know). If not, tell your child what you are doing: "I'm going to hold you now, I'm going to put my arms around you.", and then proceed to do it. I know she is very young and still a toddler but she will hear your soothing voice and understand your intent. She may put up a struggle but continue to hold her and use your voice in a comforting way until she calms her body and/or voice. A child as young as your two year old can't really tell you of the distress that is REALLY causing the tantrum. But getting into the habit of embracing and holding her can have the effect of teaching her that the distress she is experiencing is more important than the behavior she exhibits to express that distress and eventually the tantrums may become less intense and less frequent. I hope this makes sense. May the loud tantrums work their way out. I know that there is hardly any sound that goes right to our core, as parents, as deeply and as quickly, as our kids crying or screaming. As long as we remember that such outbursts are not really about bad behavior but about a crisis the child is having, we can do a whole lot of good for our kids and ourselves.

I understand that meltdowns are very hard on all of you. I am curious why you don't share any of that with us. I suspect it's a privacy thing, and you are probably too busy to film, but I am curious, perhaps interested is a better word. We get to see the best of her, and that's important from so many angles.

yes, it’s a privacy thing. We don’t want to share her hardest moments as we wouldn’t want ours broadcast either. We want to share all the positives and celebrate her. We do know that the other more difficult and not ideal parts need portrayed as well but we personally feel that until she can tell us that it’s acceptable to share, we won’t be showing them. We see how they can be educational and helpful for others to learn and recognize what it is like so we will explain somewhat what they’re like while doing our best to respect her as well.

@@TheWeeFamily of course I understand. Thats such a great way of striking a balance in all of your lives. I admire your family for your journey and adaptation along the way. I really didnt think about a meltdown and people viewing her as you say in your more recent vids " suffering autism." You guys are so great with Braylee... Its like she custom-ordered parents from heaven. Im truly happy seeing you all at your best. Thanks for your response. :)
