All right, let’s face it a four-wheel-drive van is about the coolest rig you can get anytime you go out to a rally or an event and you see a 4x4 lifted van roll in, Everybody stops to check it out.

The best overland vehicle is the one you have now, no need for anything fancy, it's the vehicle that gets you out there to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors. My dad used an old 70's Oldsmobile and drove it as far as the road would allow, we would camp out, have a fire and a cook out while enjoying each others company. Lets face it, people today just want to show off something they can barely afford.. start a channel on KZfaq to help pay for it.. It's the folks out there enjoying the trails or lack off and have zero social media, those are the real overlanders.

Nicely stated…… it sounds like you had some great experiences with you dad. We definitely agree that social media has introduced a lack of authenticity to the world‼️

SUV. Full rear seat delete. No kids. +One for the dry bags. I was literally saying "dry bags guys" out loud as I was listening right before ya'll brought them up. Which actually surprised me because you don't see many overland space dry bag videos (or mentions) on KZfaq. I recommend the Thule "Chasm," which comes in four sizes and some cool colours. When I retire and start traveling full time...Quigley conversion.

I enjoy your podcast, and really appreciate the real, honest conversation and advocacy for this activity and lifestyle. For a couple of years I've been going on outings to the southwest, car and tent camping in my SUV on BLM land. Now, with a 4x4 truck, im looking explore a little more of the grandeur of our great lands. Thanks for sharing your perspective and experiences.

I run a Gladiator and love it. I run a STO van and love it. After these experiences, We plan to convert to a Utility Wagon as primary Overlanding rig and the STO Van to be used for lighter travel that is more focused to hiking/camping. We have decided sleeping within the confines of the Wagon, even if in an Ursa Minor/Type roof compartment. The STO emphasized to us we want to prioritize sleeping within the vehicle, carry a ground tent for specific optimal situations, have a very capable vehicle, and travel very lightly.

When it’s time to replace my jeep, grand Cherokee and my Offroad camper trailer, I’ll end up in a four-wheel-drive, full-size van like a Ford or a Chevy, just use the massive storage volume and capacity, the only downside is turning radius and width for such a large vehicle. But that would still be less than my jeep pulling a trailer.

All you need to survive, is food, shelter, water, and if you’re overlanding, obviously a vehicle. Any vehicle that already has an enclosed space you can sleep in means that you don’t have to spend extra time money on your shelter. You already have a shelter with your vehicle. But the next thing you need to consider is if you’re looking for a different vehicle to do this rather than using the vehicle that you have is where do you want to go? What is the terrain like where you’ll be going and what is the difficulty of the trails within that terrain. Because you may find that the Honda Civic you have will get you to the trailhead just fine and you can sleep and camp with it; but it won’t go up Imogene pass. The next thing I would consider is how much people and gear do you need to bring along to support your journey, your selected vehicle needs to be able to accommodate all of that. Always consider your environment that you will be in if you’re making the choice for a different vehicle.

I always believe there’s no right or wrong vehicle for Overlanding. I grew up in a converted 1969 2WD Ford Econoline van with a pop top camper. It went everywhere all over the West Coast and all over eastern Oregon and Central Oregon as well as many parts of California and BC we’ve been rockhounding in eastern Oregon and places where you wouldn’t take your four-wheel-drive SUV. We also were active in a lot of motorsports so we had sand rails, hot hatches, and other high-performance import cars. I’ve been adventuring and exploring in just about all of them all over the Pacific Northwest down to Baja up in the BC Canada. I stumbled into the Jeep Grand Cherokee when I needed to get out of a bad loan on my Bronco Sport that had been damaged by a deer strike during the pandemic. The Jeep WK2 has proven to be the perfect vehicle for me. It has tons of capacity. It can tow far more than the Bronco sport, and being the Trailhawk model, it is far more capable than what I need. But I now tow a little 13 foot off-road camper trailer, because I’m full-time with no home base. I also love the way the jeep handles on the road cause let’s face it we’re spending 60 to 75% of our time on roads.
