I agree, I had to choose between the 997 and 991 and bought the 991. the 991 just does everything better, the interior has better quality components and materials that hold up better. I had a cayman with the 997 interior and most of the rubber touch surfaces started to get sticky over the years and it was garage kept. Not bashing the 997 at all very nice car and I would have been happy to own one but given the choice...as he said Porsche always makes sure the next variant is better. In another 10 years you probably could make the same argument about the 991 vs the 993, 994 and so on. The black color in the video does not do the lines of the 991 justice....

I originally went shopping for a 997 Turbo S but after test driving a few cars I came home with a 997 GTS Carrera 2. Although the Turbo S is a faster car, I found the rear wheel drive GTS to be more engaging, and much more fun to drive. Even Walter Rohrl said the 997 GTS was the best 911 he had ever driven, and being a Porsche test driver and two times World Rally champion he would have certainly driven a few. I love my 997 GTS Carrera 2 and I honestly don't think I'll ever sell it.

You and I are 100% on the same page. We can have any 911 we want, and we want a GTS. As someone who spends a lot of time on track, I have no interest in a turbocharged anything. The 997 GTS is the perfect 911, in my opinion. And not that it matters, but even more rare than the same year GT3 with only 314 2011 coupes made for the United States in it’s first ever year. Truly something special. Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing your story!

I am blown away the accuracy of the review ! 100 percent! I have 997 and pondered moving to a 991. I was shocked that I didn’t enjoy driving the car and felt like the car lost soul. It felt my Audi S4 - luxurious and fast… but no connection to road. 997 is the more “real” sports car

Not really, its just not very good - its not simply metrics, the chassis in the 997 is dark ages stuff compared to the 991. The only people that make statements like this have never really driven them hard. The 997.1 engine was terrible.

You’re delusional. Unless you work as a Porsche high performance driving instructor, I’m going to bet I’ve driven way more Porsches way harder on track than you. Also, there is far more to a sports car than track days. Most people never even take their cars on track. But hey, you do you.

I appreciate your observations a lot. I wanted to do this video 3 years before it launched, and actually worked on it over a period of 2 years. I knew it was a question so many Porsche 911 enthusiasts, and future 911 buyers were curious about, and nobody else had done a comparison like it at the time. While any 911 is an awesome car, there are significant differences between the air cooled models, the 996 and 997 models, and the larger 991 and 992 gens. They are in fact very different machines that appeal to different people for very different reasons. This video set out to determine which of these 2 very popular recent generations was better at filling the traditional role of a sports car. I was very happy with the result and it is clear 9 months after launch that an overwhelming number of 911 enthusiasts feel the same way. Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing your feedback!

Thank you for watching, subscribing and commenting. Yes, I grew up in a military family, so money was not something we had. But through hard work, I’ve been fortunate to be able to own and drive some of the most desirable and sought after performance cars. I chose my 997.2 GTS as my dream car, and like it says on my channel, I believe dream cars should be driven. I wrote a PCA Cover Story to that effect many years ago. Yes, my GTS is my favorite car. I daily it and track it on average once a month. I intend on keeping it for ever. There is no other car that does everything I want and which I would prefer for my use. And while values on 911s and many other cars are rising, because I don’t intend on selling, it doesn’t benefit me in any way. I agree it turns me off when a potential buyer is more concerned with future values than the actual driving experience. Cheers!

Got a 997.1 GT3 new in 2007. After 55,000 miles, absolutely trouble free, if you don’t count lots of new tires, brakes, and two clutches; it is perfect! Still absurdly fast, completely analog, I am able to drive with the new GT 3’s in fast rallies though sometimes you have to do a little intentional oversteer for the tight corners, and with its iconic wing, I am absolutely certain that I got the perfect GT3. Maybe not for everyone, but certainly for me.

Now and then some viewer (who obviously owns a 991) will accuse me of being “biased” because I own a 997.2. They don’t bother to consider that it’s actually the reverse. I can own any 911 I want. And I’ve driven most of them. I choose to own and keep a 997.2 GTS because in my experience, it is the best 911 for my needs, which is a sports car that feels and drives like a sports car, serves as my daily driver and is also competitive on track. The 991 is not as good when those criteria are considered. And the market clearly agrees. Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing your comments and congratulations on your awesome 911!

A more fair comparison is to compare the 997 GTS to the 991.1 GTS. Also, the last naturally aspirated 991.1 GTS is considered the “peak”911 by many-before the turbos came to the Carrera with the 991.2. The 991.1 GTS is not only more capable and powerful but many think it’s more beautiful as well than it’s predecessor. To each their own…

This was not a GTS comparison, it was the 997 vs 991. Both of these 2 were available for sale on the showroom floor at the same time, have essentially the same engine and the performance, which was not compared in this video, is very similar. What is different is the chassis, size, style and overall feel of the cars in their intended role of being sports cars. And that was the point of this comparison! Thanks again for watching!

I sold a 914-6 I had for 32 years with the original 2 liter rebuilt to 210 hp and a 1963B 120 hp original motor for a 2011 997.2 Carrera S Cab, 26,000 mi, and I couldn't be happier. It does everything well, is fast and comfortable. I love the PDK. The review is spot on about these models and I would have added a bit more info on the engine, especially its 40% less parts, direct injection and return to reliability. the 997.2 is the sweet spot of modern 911's.

Thanks for your comments and for watching and subscribing. 32 years is impressive! You are indeed correct with your points about some of the improvements. I believe I did mention the fact that the new engine block design eliminated many parts and incorporated things like previously bolted on brackets into the casting. But to answer you specifically, I have to cut a lot of things out of the videos because people won’t bother to watch a 2 hour long video and because if I cover everything, I run the risk of boring the few people that do click. You should see what gets left on the cutting room floor! Again thanks for your contribution and congratulations on owning what is likely the best 911 Porsche ever made.

Thank you GTS Car Life. One of the best 997 analyses I have seen! I am the owner of one of the very last 997.2 Carrera 4 GTS produced in 2012 so I could easily be accused of being biased. (This is not my only 911). In years to come the 997.2 will take its place in Porsche history as the end of an era representing the embodiment of so much of what 911 sports cars epitomised; namely a true sportscar undiluted by the gradual morphing of design details and look-a-like accessories that made it less distinguishable from common sports coupes. This not to say that the 911 is not a uniquely special car, but it needs to take care that in its design evolution it does not lose the character that set it apart from all others. This will be my forever car.

I have to disagree with you there. The 991 literally has engine noises pumped in to the cabin, like a current Toyota Supra, BMW or a Ford Focus RS. That is fake. Frankly, the best sounding water cooled 911 is the 996. If you listen to the 2003 996.2 I reviewed, which is 100% stock 9as are both 911's in this test) you will hear that the M96 motor sounded amazing. The 996 was also lighter and more raw than the nicer, more refined 997. Thank you for watching, and I appreciate your thoughts on this!

The targa feature is fantastic on the 991 and 992. I believe you can swap the paddle wheel for what you have. The biggest expense is typically the airbag, which you may be able to reuse. I have owned them all and the 991.2 is by far the best modern 911 made to date. It’s build quality, design and materials used is far superior to anything in its past, and trumps the 992. The 997 build quality is better than the 996 but not that much better as both are very cheap feeling. It was very obvious Porsche made the 991 a huge leap forward and back to their original high-quality build and performance standards. The 991 power and torque is significantly stronger than the 997 any range in the rpm you are in. The 991 even on base form feels significantly fast enough for street and weekend track use yet still has useful modern features that actually work.

True...I loved my 1980 Targa SC, but not the 915 gearbox. My 991 is a C2 Coupe, with every available option, except for full leather and PASM. I was very lucky to find it. It even has factory wheel spacers, red seat belts, clear tail lamps, sport adaptive seats, platinum Carrera S wheels...just to mention a few. I actually love the large glass roof (wish it opened up more). Its a cool look inside the cabin. It is black over black w/PDK. The 911 is the best car I have ever owned. Although my 92 NSX was pretty cool (the second best sports car for me). FYI...I can put my cell phone in the center console next to the USB input :). Once again, entertaining video. I’ve watched A LOT of 911 content. Owned a bunch of different eras. This was an excellent apples to very slightly more modern apples comparison. Excellent work. I currently drive an 3.2, but would 100% reacquire a 997 as it’s my top choice for ‘modern’ 911. 997 turbo or any 997.2 for the win, for me. Again, really well composed review (even if you’ve shown your bias with your ownership) Thanks and cheers amigo

Thanks for watching, subscribing and contributing your comments. I do find it funny when some people claim I am "biased" because I have one. The truth is I can afford any 911 I want. I owned a different 911 when Porsche announced the final version of the street 997. I was at the North American launch party for the car. I chose the 997.2 GTS because it was the most compelling, most perfect 911 Porsche made in my opinion, and I knew that with the impending launch of the new, larger 991 version, Porsche would never again build something as special as the 997.2 GTS. It was the one model where they threw everything they had - Power Kit, Center Lock Wheels, Wide Body RWD, enhanced styling front, rear and side (GT2 RS side skirts) into one, final and ultimate street version. The same thing can be said about the 993, which I also love, but which is not nearly as well suited for daily use, and cannot compare on track, both being how I use my car regularly. Cheers!

I don’t know that the more track oriented GTS has additional transmission cooling over the S. It does have a third (middle) radiator. And the additional 23 horsepower is designed to be useful on track, not 0-60 street runs. But I run my 2011 997.2 GTS hard in very hot Texas summers on a super fast track, Formula 1’s Circuit of The Americas and i’ve never had any issues whatsoever. These cars are incredibly robust and durable. My 2003 996.2 Carrera did suffer from brake fade and didn’t like turning in, and also required that I have the Porsche Motorsport AOS and oil pan baffling from the Spec Boxster. Perhaps the 997.1 M97 engine would suffer from some of those same issues.

@GTSCarLife
@GTSCarLife 7 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching, subscribing and commenting. Porsches in general are very robust and reliable machines. The 911 is often atop of reliability surveys for sports cars. The 997 evolved from the 996, which itself was very reliable, though it did have a couple design flaws that of course have received a lot of attention, understandably. The 997 and even more so the 997.2 are extremely reliable. The newer models have more technology and electronics, so they have more opportunity for issues, but are still very reliable. The Cayman is closely related to the 911.

Thank you for watching and for your feedback. I would strongly encourage you to keep your GTS. You will never be able to replace that car - Porsche only made 314 GTS coupes for the United States in 2011, values will only continue to go up for all 911 models, and especially the GTS. It is the only rear drive, naturally aspirated 997 Porsche made in a wide body besides the GT3 RS model. And with Center Lock Wheels from the GT3 and Turbo S, side skirts from the GT2 RS and various other changes, the 997 GTS is truly a special 911.

Love it, the 1st of hopefully many more articles of the 997.2 GTS which was ignored by Porsche because of the Hype for the 991. I have a 2012 4GTS, manual one of (95) imported of the +(272) total 4GTS's imported to the US, (there were (30) that went to Canada and (4) that went to South America , and its a jewel, this from an owner of (5) 911's Porsches since the late 1960's . Either the Manual (which I prefer) or the PDK, (I get it) if they have the Chrono package, should be driven often in the "Sport" mode which I do whenever I go on back country roads, so satisfying.

Thank you for watching, subscribing and contributing to the conversation! I will assume you also hang out on the Rennlist 997 forum like I occasionally do. I knew the GTS was very rare (I had read 2,265 coupes made for the world) but @Prairiedawg opened our eyes by tracking down and decoding the VINs to calculate numbers like you mentioned and the fact that my 2011 GTS Coupe is #269 of 314 made for the United States. Like you, I’ve owned many incredible sports cars going back to my first, a new 1984 GTI which was replaced with a 1987 Mustang GT 5.0. I have bought 6 Porsches, and the 997.2 GTS is the one I will never sell. I will say the 996 was even more true to the original concept, and a great driving 911, but I appreciate the higher quality interior and more muscular exterior styling of the GTS. Again like you, I wanted a manual, but as rare as these cars are, when I found one that checked most of my mandatory boxes, I sucked it up on the transmission. Now that I am no longer a teenager and with as much track driving as I do, I have come to really respect and enjoy the PDK. When I need a manual fix, I drive my 1985.5 944 or my sons Focus RS. All fun cars. If you find yourself heading to the Austin area and in the mood for a hot laps ride along on COTA, please reach out to me. Again, thank you for your support!

As relatively new to Porsche, I have a MT 718 spyder and I’m contemplating switching to a 991.1 MT. Thank you for watching, subscribing and contributing to the conversation! The 718 Spyder with a manual transmission is an awesome Porsche! What is it you want to accomplish with a 911? If you plan on switching cars often, which is frankly what the overwhelming percentage of Porsche buyers do, then my advice would be to keep sampling the best of the current and future offerings. The car you have is definitely among the very top, certainly if daily use is a factor! I feel the 992 is a big step ahead from the 991, whereas if you watched the video, you know how I feel about the 991. If on the other hand, you want a 911 to buy and keep "forever", I could argue the 997 and specifically a 997.2, RWD coupe would be that car. The 997 is already considered a Modern Classic by most in the automotive community, and offers so many qualities that the newer cars just can't. The 911 in general, and the 997 specifically, is a very reliable car and very robust. At any track day, it is common to see a 911 account for more than half of the cars there. They are very well built. I am personally aware of 997s well into the mid 200,000 miles with nothing serious beyond typical maintenance. Like anything mechanical, you will have parts wear out and yes, you will have to replace wear items but if it's a car you intend on keeping, then you just have to view it as part of the ownership experience. If that is not your goal, then you will have a blast putting your money into any of the new models. Either way, you'll have a blast! Let us know what you do next! Thomas

Own both a 997.2 and 991.1. Used to have a 991.2 which I had for less than a year. 997 does have the most Porsche feel and look but probably will be first to go. 991 is still small and nimble, better for bringing along the kids, has better tech, and looks a little more special (I have the factory sport design package with ducktail). Also sounds epic with Porsche sport exhaust. Pse on the 991.2 sounds terrible. 991 feels more planted than the 997. Steering on mine is pretty damn close to my 997. Steering on the 991.2 was too light and artificial. The 997 has better leather but more creaks inside. 991 at stock height (pasm) sits lower than my lowered 997. So surprisingly feels more sporty inside. 997 feels faster for some reason (maybe the size). Can’t go wrong with either but for a daily driver 991 wins. For nostalgia 997 wins. But to truly get an analog experience you will have to go air cooled as both 997 and 991 feel too modern.

Turbos are 100% better mated with a PDK unit. Manual transmissions lose too many RPM (boost) in between shifts, and also cannot accelerate nearly as quickly. I understand why some people feel an old school manual is more enjoyable to them. But by any measurable method, PDK is superior. Funny how some people pay so much extra for the highest performance sports car on the market, then saddle it with a transmission that makes it slower. Thanks for watching, subscribing and commenting. I have them too, and my 35 year old 928S4 with 136k miles has less suspension rattles . But back to the 997, suspension top mounts, track arm ball joints, all have developed rattles on cars with less than 60k miles. My 2006 997 S needs new top mounts in front at 55k miles, and the noises just "arrived" after one spirited 600 mile trip. Same with a 2000 Boxster S I drove hard through some back roads. Front ball joint rattles in the lower arms appeared after one 250 mile drive. M97 engines have some common issues as well, which were largely solved by the 9A1 featured in your video. I agree the the 997 styling was a welcome return, and the driving experience is more enjoyable but I wish the working bits were more durable. Thanks for the vid, further convinced me to keep my manual S...

Definitely keep your 997 S manual! Thank you for watching, and for sharing your experiences. I can honestly say I have never heard anyone else ever mention the suspension noises you have. And I now have over 66,000 miles on mine (the car in the video) and in addition to being my only car and my daily driver, I track it hard at Circuit of The Americas, about 350-400 miles a weekend, on average once a month. No issues ever. I will ask around when I meet with other 997 owners to see if they have experienced what you described. Either way, your car is awesome and I hope you continue to enjoy it!

I’d argue that the potential 997 suspension issues you mentioned are easily fixable, even gt3 parts are a direct swap. However, you can’t fix the electric steering, bloated size, and sedan interior of the 991 without an almost infinite budget.

Good video for a start... I personally haven't driven the 991, but i own a 997.1 c2s and i absolutely love its looks, how it drives (so poised, so precise on the steering wheel, so planted on the road) and how it makes me feel. Owning a Porsche 911 was a dream for many years and i was very happy to buy one last year, in stunning condition and with a crazy amount of work done to it (bought it from my best mate). So, i haven't driven a 991, but one thing that strikes me with them, they are massive 👀😳... And on tiny roads such as the ones where i live in the South East of England, i wouldn't be happy with such a big car at all. Even the 997 is no small car, so often prefers taking the nippy z4 3.0, but one thing i know, the 997 is a keeper, and if i ever have bore scoring issues etc... i will bore the engine to 4l and supercharge it... That way, i won't have to buy anything else ever😂 as it will be 997 turbo territory fast😳 Damnit I just realised I had already written a message on this video 4 days ago😂😂😳. Sorry🥴

Well speaking about the convertible top lines were funny looking on the 997 that’s why I went with a 991.1 it more held to the beautiful clean shape of the 911 coupe, with roof up. your reviews just a little biased OK may be a lot. I shopped for mine for about a year and a half or two years looking hard at the 997.2 but ultimately going with a 2014 911 S loaded with every option “all 7 buttons” that a GTS has except the extra horsepower which I don’t miss, 400 hp is plenty and all the fun is lower speeds in more technical type Curvy roads anyway of course with the top down is to me the real feel of a sports car. I probably would’ve been happy with the 2009 911 S I was looking at in 2019 but it was a tough time to buy 911 they went like hotcakes. I still have my 2000 Boxster that is a momentum car and its a blast to drive, different but nothing compares to the planted, grippy, glorious 911s that you can instantly dial the power on and break the rear end loose and slide around the corner it’s unreal and what I always dreamed of and more.

It’s difficult finding “exact matches “ but I try not to fault a car for equipment differences. For example, it also did not have Sport Chrono, but I do not hold against it anything that would be a result of that. I drive a bunch of cars and pretty much all recent 911 models from the base Carrera and S to the GT3 and GT2 RS, as well as the Cayman GT4 RS and so on. So I think it’s fair to say that the more recent models have less sound. Frankly, the 996 had the best sound of all water cooled models, from the factory. Cool reviews coming. @barryhutchinson5130 Understand. I didn’t have access to a 997 S, but the 997 GTS is really not noticeably faster than the S and the interior in leather is identical so these two cars served the purpose of comparing 2 different modern 911 versions that a buyer back then, and more importantly today, can choose from. The 991 GTS came out for 2015 as you know. Even so, all the attributes that I discussed are still there in the 991 GTS. Also as I said, any 911 is a great car. I agree, most people that have never owned a 911 before for example a 996 or 997 will be happy with a 991, but for us, we have been spoilt and so accustomed to the feel and connection we get from a 996 or a 997. A bit of a snob Porsche owner review. As in the old Porsche is the only true Porsche. I’ve owned a 1981 911sc for 30 years now. And also have a 2016 991.1. Both awesome cars. Newer 911 are always better 911’s. 997 vs 991.1; the 991.1 is 100lbs lighter and more horsepower. The 911.1S out preforms the 997 GTS. All 911 are awesome, it comes down to what you want and how much to spend. If I could afford it I would also have a 2023 911GT3RS

So you’ve said the same things I did. Except the snob part. Any 911 is great; I believe that was literally the first sentence out of my mouth. And I also said each generation gets more and more capable. There is however more to any vehicle than just specs. And the 992 GT3 RS is a track beast, but not suitable for daily use. So we agree on most points. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts.

I own a 1968 SWB hot rodded 2.5 MFI long hood 911 R replica build - great car. Raw and real. And the 997 GTS, which might be the best modern Porsche fit / finish / balance / size Porsche has made. And there is no 996/997/991 GT3 I would trade it for as I just don’t enjoy those on the streets. I sold my GT3 to get the 68 and build its engine. And after 2 years of owning the GT3 the itch was scratched and I’d never buy another “super car” / heavy ass clutch / manual Porsche track car again. And at my track 10:1 people want to take a lap in the 68 over any GT3. Smiles per mile / mileage may vary. The new cars don’t do it for me. And I’m hardly the only one. Emissions regulations and electronic nannies to meet euro regs etc etc is the only reason the 991 became a 3.0 turbo from nat aspirated. Then they added 4 wheel steering modulation to go with the video game steering to make the newer 911s steer and handle like the smaller pre 2012/997 cars do. And now with the new 992 S/T car they got rid of 4 wheel steering and turbos to “pure” it up. Nobody is arguing Porsche are genius at making every generation “better”. If your version of better is what you actually want. But better is also judged over time and history. It’s why they keep remaking history: A 1968 911 R is valued at 3 or 4 x the value of the 2016 911 R - which is faster - but not “better”. Just like the 2023 S/T will be to its heritage edition. You have a 991.1 and many love or don’t love that car compared to others for reasons in this video. You don’t have to agree. But having an opinion is hardly “snobby”. Some cars will just age better after their 10+yrs. The 997.2 so far is one of those. Time will tell if the 991.1 will do same. Or many other modern variants that aren’t from the GT department.

I own a white 991.1 Carrera S, 2014 model, PDK with the “flippers” at the steering wheel. Good options (I think) such as PDCC, “turbo seats”, red coloured seatbelts, sport chrono package with sport exhaust, black leather interior, dark rims. No sunroof since I agree with you that the sunroof looked much better on the 997 and be honest….does a race car (GT3, GT3 RS, Supercup etc) have a sunroof? With the 997 I also spend time on the track, attended the Porsche driving school and even got my racing license. The 991 that I own since 2018 I never spend any mile on the track but love to use it for nice touring trips. As you also mentioned in your video the 991 is better build for this purpose. I think it has a good power weight ratio and the engine with the sport exhaust sound great….you don’t need to go fast or drive with high RPM’s to enjoy the car. Unfortunately with the 991.2 it’s a different story since the turbo took away a lot of that beautiful sound. I also find the 991 more stable at high speeds as well as in curves ( well…the PDCC helps a lot of course..;) ) When I look at the pictures of my 997, I can still fall in love with that car. I also owned a 996.2 but I changed it for the 997 after a couple of months….I liked the 997 much more those days, with its nice roundings and the looks of the 993. I must say that your white 997.2 GTS is a beauty. The GTS has anyway a sharper/better sound then the Carrera S. My next one will be a GTS too. Not sure if it will be a 992 though. The 964 and the 993 offer indeed less safety and convenience but hey are great to drive. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. Interesting fact, Porsche never intended to offer 4 wheel drive on the GTS. They planned for the GTS to be the most athletic Carrera model, but be positioned as somewhat more street friendly than the GT3, which is too track focused for daily driving. Upon announcement of the swan song 997 models, including the GTS, Porsche dealers in far north countries complained that they were being left out because they needed 4wd to be able to sell to their clients. Porsche quickly responded that they would get one, and the 4 GTS was born.

Thanks for watching, subscribing and commenting! I’m not sure which videos you are referring to. I can say that we have had 6 Porsches (3 currently) and they have all been very well built and reliable. I drove my 2003 996.2 to 98,000 miles (it now has over 107,000) with no issues and have almost 68,000 on my 2011 997.2 GTS with PDK. I also still have a 1985.5 944 with 60,000 miles that my son daily drives, and my wife got a 2023 Taycan 4S Cross Turismo in January. Porsche has a well deserved reputation for engineering and building cars that are ultra high performance, low maintenance and reliable. With that said, you will want to make sure that any previously owned car you purchase, especially one that is highly engineered and uses precise and not inexpensive parts, has been properly maintained by its previous owners. Always inspect what you expect- get a PPI from a proper Porsche specialist. Let me know what you find!

@criticalmass1 Many of the so called “experts “ are really just opportunists making clickbait videos. There are even websites that claim to be Porsche experts which post completely fake “facts”. I worked in automotive for 20 years, and have stayed involved in multiple ways including racing, instructing and other avenues. The best source of accurate information is the reputation a brand and model has, as well as speaking with automotive professionals who interact with different vehicles on a regular basis. Through my perosnal experience, instructing at COTA, as well as friendships with renowned Porsche technicians I feel I am knowledgeable about the pros and cons of most brands of performance cars. I see them tested on track and Porsche is hands down the most durable and reliable when pushed. Another good source is the KZfaq channel Friends Green Porsche. He deals with a lot of 997 models and shows you how he maintains them. The 2016 Cayman has a different engines. I’m not in love with the agricultural sounding 4 cylinder models, but they have all been proven to be reliable. The 997.2 is a couple generations older now - I just tested a 992 Turbo this week and will be uploading that video next week. Some people like the newer, more modern interior and feel of a later model. Others like the more classic experience the 997.2 delivers. The 997 is definitely more simple and the PDK is nowhere near as refined as it is on the 992, but I prefer the 997.2 for daily use and also love the smaller size and modern classic experience. Many of the same issues apply to the 987 and 981 Boxsters. I have owned both and the 981 is hands down a much, much better car. I like everything about the 981 better than my 987. I do agree on the handbrakes though. I miss my handbrake lever!

As a 996.1 C2 6mt coupe owner, I think mine is the best 911. I don't hate the headlights. Instead I fly the ambers proudly. And unlike many, I have not lowered or added body kits to get that gt3ish appearance, nor have I succumbed to fashion and moved to 18 or 19" wheels. 17s are light and right, and make the car flickable and enjoyable to drive aggressively. I solved the understeer problem easily and cheaply with a proper front and rear anti sway bar by eibach. The superb balance and weighting equivalency of the steering, shifter and pedals are aligned perfectly, creating harmony in the cockpit for anyone who cares to explore those characteristics. It's for the drivers. You are definitely a driver, and your 997 GTS is probably the last best 911... But too expensive for me. So I got creative. To solve the horrible throttle response, I flashed a tune. To remove weak points I added a more robust air oil Separator (UAOS). The cooling systems are all new and work perfectly. There's no bore scoring. The ims has been recently changed to the ln unit. Total price to restore and (mostly) bulletproof this v lightweight and stiff sports purpose chassis was just over 50k, car included. Try getting any other 911 remotely as fun to drive _for the cost_. I guess a 997.1 might be attainable at that price, but there's all sorts of maintenance needed on most of those as they approach higher mileage, so nope. No 993s are that cheap. Sure, a boxter handles better on track when dialed, but it's not a 911. So nyah nyah.😅 I would not consider the 991 in the same category of vehicle. It's a Grand tourer with a big butt... Nope, I'll stick with my 996, patently a better car than any air cooled, yet not a behemoth. When I see what folks are paying for air cooled SCs or older, I'm not tempted. If money were no object, then yes, for the beauty and simplicity, a '74 Carrera would be in my driveway in a heartbeat. But for a car that you can enjoy daily, with excellent AC the 996 wins again. It's old enough, but not too old. Like me. Anyway... I'm rambling. Again ... Ha ha. Great video, keep up the content!

Thank you so much for your wonderful comments about your amazing 911. I’m curious, did you have a chance to watch my video on the 996? That was my car and I put 96,610 miles on her. My friend in San Diego has her now and she has over 107,000 miles. Completely trouble free. I also did the IMS replacement and the air oil separator from Porsche motorsport, which was actually designed for spec Boxsters back in the day. Never messed with the suspension so the understeer was always there, and mine came with 18 inch wheels. You won’t get an argument from me about the 996. I have said in the video and firmly believe they are the most true to the original concept of any water cooled 911. They are lightweight, raw, pure and more fun to drive than anything built afterwards. The performance specs always get better with any new Porsche, so they don’t compete in that regard, but they are more fun to drive. There is a purity with the 996 that is unmatched by later 911s. I love what Porsche and PCA did for the one off special that Jerry Signfield bought. Would have been great if those types of upgrades were available to the public. And like you, I actually like the 996 headlights. I think the big mistake Porsche made was putting them on the Boxster first Again, thank you so much for watching, subscribing and your awesome comments.

Maintenance on the 997 will now come into play. The late 991 models are still relatively new. Unlike the 997. But you pays your money …

That is true. However 911’s are remarkably reliable and much less expensive to operate and maintain than other cars with similar performance or mileage. I’m continually amazed at what these cars give their owners and how little they ask for in return. Thank you for watching, subscribing and commenting!

I have owned both. Traded a 997.1s 6MT for a 991.1 C2 7MT, and never regretted the decision. The 991 is the better car in every objective manner. It out performs the 997 across the board, and is absolutely a more refined and more modern car. I agree wholeheartedly with the common subjective assessments/opinions about the 997 offering better “road feel”, and a more compact sports car experience (the 991 in no way feels “huge”, but the 997 is a bit more cozy) and, although the 991’s 7MT is spectacular, the 997’s 6MT is “spectacular +1”

Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing your views. Do you plan on trading in for a 992? I just spent 2 days in a 992 Turbo S and to me, the 992 is light years ahead of the 991 in refinement and the all important special "feel". If you appreciate the performance improvements of each succeeding generation, I think you'll really like the 992. Cheers!

I did the same, 997.1 2S MT to a 991.2 2S MT. The 997 was smaller and felt more like a true sports car, but the 991.2 is just a better car all around. More planted, more power, tunable, modern, and the electrical steering is greatly improved. I’m glad I made the switch, no regrets.

@hobear637 I agree the electric steering was vastly improved with succeeding model years. Also, by any measurable stat, Porsche tends to get “better and better” with each new generation. That’s a fact. But the point of this comparison wasn’t which 911 is the fastest. That is now a 992. It was which 911 is the best sports car, and more specifically, which 911 is the best 911. Of course that is subjective. Not everyone will agree and many will have different opinions. This video reflects mine. Thanks for watching, subscribing and contributing your perspective!

Sold my 997.2 C4S for a 991.2 T. The NA engine was great but don’t regret the trade for a minute.

anybody who plans to track the 997…..you need to address the oil pick up issue and it needs front camberplates. it will understeer and devour the outer shoulders of the fronts in half a day.

That would be true for people hard tracking a 996 or maybe certain 997.1 models, but is not at all true for my 997.2 GTS. My 2003 996.2 Carrera manual did not want to turn, the brakes overheated quickly and I had to upgrade the oil pan and air/oil separator with Boxster Spec motorsport parts. My 2011 997.2 GTS with PDK is 100% bone stock and runs perfectly at COTA, which is a super fast 3.4 mile F1 track, even in 110 degree heat. My GTS turns beautifully, accelerates and brakes like it was made for track use. The 9A1 motor and chassis / suspension improvements are night and day versus the 996 and early (997.1) gen 997. I love the 993. It was the NEW 911 when I was in college. Fell head over heals in love with it. It was so new and so exciting. I love the 997 but also the new 992.1.

I understand. The SC was the 911 that I lusted over as a teenager, so to me, all air-cooled 911s are supposed to have impact bumpers! It's easy to fall in love with any 911, and the 993 is surely a candidate for best one ever. I just reviewed a 992 Turbo S yesterday, and will be putting that video up next.
