In "Snaring 2000" by Hal Sullivan he gives you the size of the loop an the hight off the ground to target a specific. species so the 19 x19 cable giving a perfect loop is optimum with any species by his specks. No other cable is needed. Get the best and you can never go wrong.

Meat Trapper I recently started making some snares in advance it was 1/19 twist 1/16 everything turned out just fine when I got to the 5/64 cable I had trouble making the 180 bend lol I couldn’t get it straight so I said to myself old meat trapper does it so I went back and watched one of your videos it was the pliers I was using I went to my trap basket and got my lineman or side cutter pliers like you had in your video it worked just fine lol 5/64. In 1/19 twist you don’t bend to much with your fingers evidently the pliers I was using would let it roll even when I had everything laid out straight to put that extra little bend so your video got me straightened out on that quick

I live near an air force logistics base...meaning they repair aircraft...including flight controls. At one time I had several feet of replaced and scrapped control cables that were the strongest stuff in smallest diameter wire rope Ild had ever seen. Just a thought if you are ever near a base that sends scrap to a metal recycler...you might want to visit the recycler

What is the best way to store snares as for a rolling them up. Lock all the way down w little loop or loop same size as your wrap. When rolling them up.
@Meattrapper
@Meattrapper 2 жыл бұрын
I like to roll the snare up approximately the same size as the loop size will be, or a little smaller. That is, for a coon snare I'll coil the snare up about 6" in diameter, beaver snares about 8-10", etc. Basically the thicker the cable, the larger diameter I coil them, the thinner the cable, the smaller I coil them. Hope this helps.

Does either cable lend itself to re-use, or are both subject to kinking?
@Meattrapper

MT, I can't get my head wrapped around the fact that 1x19 is stronger than 7x7. Can you shed any light on the tinsel strength of the two cables? Thanks!!!
@Meattrapper
@Meattrapper 6 жыл бұрын
Sure. The breaking strength of a 1/16" 1x19 cable is 500 pounds. The breaking strength of a 1/16" 7x7 cable is 480 pounds. The 1x19 is a stringer cable. The more important aspect is the tightness of the wrap. Think of a loosely wrapped cable versus a tightly wrapped cable. The looser wrapped cable is easier to separate into individual strands and thus much easier to break. This is why even though the nominal difference between the two cables is 20 pounds, in reality the 7x7 is much more prone to breakage by an animal.

What size of 1/19 cable do you use and do you use double ferrules or one single ferrule and one double
@Meattrapper
@Meattrapper 6 жыл бұрын
For beaver I use 1/16" diameter 1x19 twist cable and I use one double ferrule. Beaver really don;'t fight that hard so I don't have to make my snares bomb proof like I do for hogs.

The Meat Trapper what do you use for coyotes
@Meattrapper
@Meattrapper 6 жыл бұрын
I rarely trap coyotes, but when I do I use 3/32" 7x7 snares made by SouthernSnares.com. They sell the best snares of anyone I've ever tried. The guy there is Brian. If you give him a call and tell him I sent you, he'll fix you right up.
