Far to many dog owners don't train their dogs and it makes those dogs an issue to others. Strong willed/stubborn dogs need more than a passive dog does. Keep an eye on a dogs weight to as it can creep up. My girl has put on 1.5 kilos so I have cut her food, upped her exercise. My glasses are same as yours Robert they're cool : ) . Thank you both.

As a guy that grew up in the 60s and early 70s, built my own slot cars, mini bikes, and go carts, had dogs and got into an occasional fight, you are spot on about today’s young men. Their attire, lack of respect for their elders, and sense of entitlement, it’s just flat out depressing. Great video today, by the way. I currently have a 3 year old male Belgium Mal. He’s great, but listening and learning from you, especially when it comes to structure. What a revelation that was. Thank you.

you are right. I'm from Denmark and e-collar is illegal here. Also more and more dog breeds is illegal here. And about trainer education here, as I have, is only about positive training....like a goodie solves all problems.....That is not working in real life. And as a trainer for one of the unions here in DK. I find it so frustatrated that I aint barely allowed to help pp with their big dogs, to advise them using a chain-collar. Because that is not in the category of positive training.... Real life/situations doesn't solve with a goodie. But that the dog can feel that it have a handler in the other end of the leash So I love your information/outcall about how important it's to not band tools, that helps many situations in daily life with our beloved dogs

Ive been getting very discouraged woth my newest dog, a blue lacy (maybe a tad pit mixed in there) Ive always loved dog training....but my inability to articulate the training and how we should both be on the same page to my boyfriend is really making things difficult. Im autistic so communication with people is very weird for me. The dog makes great progress when its just me at home. The second my boyfriend comes home it all changes. He gets frustrated, only sees the things the dog does that he considers bad. The dog jo longee listens to me and even will snap at me i assume because of the change in hierarchy. I wish i knew how to explain to him the processes and i do try....i love listening to your work and watching your videos. You word what you say so clearly. Thank you

If I could be younger again I’d study aikido at a high level, the softer style of Seishiro Endo sensei, or someone like Ikeda sensei or Saotome sensei etc etc..I reached near black belt status and my neck disabled me after several operations and hardware insertions. As an adult, trust me, you aren’t used to rolling and getting back up again..my abs and rear were in shockingly fantastic shape, after the initial dizziness at night subsided (again, adults not used to rolling..actually made me sick at night the first several days) and the initial crippling pain of getting used to being back in shape. Aikido might be the most difficult martial art to even get a working ability in, much less master. It’s much more about developing a feeling than “do this when they do that” type thing. Problem with physical education is that they make ppl run, without ever building up to it..if you’d just walk 3 minutes, jog one, (or beginners walk 9 jog one) then increase the running but always include some walking, running becomes fun and not torture. If they’d get kids interested in something rather than just forcing an activity without proper training we’d see more ppl staying in shape.

As you mentioned, about life and meaning and more years behind you then in front of you. this is what realization I came to and why I wanted to work with dogs vs doing what I have done for a career for the last 30 years. it was this realization that lead me to you 5 years ago as I knew I was geting a new dog and I needed training before I got the dog. I try and learn every day and work with my dogs everyday in some fashion. Even living with your dog is training. =)

I always think that those who stand strongly with purely positive training and not open up to other methods are those who just have to be right and to serve their own ego. To be a really good trainer is to be open minded with tools if it's going to help the dogs, and not to just criticise others as they have no clue about the handler nor the dog. Those who judge do not understand, those who understand do not judge.

Hi Robert! Love your content and your advice and help you give to dog owners like myself. I have a question. My husband was offered a retired ex police dog( Malinois) and was wondering if you would recommend us to take one( he works in a naval base and got many dogs who's retired and needing a home) . We got two children( 5&11) and three other dogs( a boxer and two huskies) . I try to train my dogs every day using your videos as tools and help and have to say we age succeeding.☺️ I do often stay with my children in my home country Hungary in a very rural area and many times I felt I could benefit of a dog who'd protecting us from intruders while my husband is away working . I'm planning to go with my boxer for a protection training with help of a professional dog trainer for the very same reason. We thought would be nice to home a lovely dog and to feel secure in her/his presence. Thanks if you do help me out in this matter. Greetings from Scotland☺️.

There are many things that are uphill, here in Denmark, 13 breeds are banned also mixes where one or more are on the ban list. And when IFR (International Federation of Rottweilers) goes along with the pure positive ideology and ban the stick hit in IGP AND when the chairman expects IGP to be banned in a few years, well then?????!!!

8:00 This is what I have been saying, but people are like "That won't happen!". I'm like it's happening in other places! It's a slippery slope. You let a ban happen on one thing, but then it goes beyond your control. Eventually, they'll ban sports and working dogs. People say it won't happen, but then ignore it when it does.

My youngest dog was trained via free shaping, it took a ton of time and required lots of patience but I really think it helped him learn how to learn. I do not think most people are willing to put in the time I did during this process. That being said, not every single thing he can do now was completed via free shaping, his heeling was built through luring, but the positions required during heeling were often shaped. I absolutely do not use only positive methods in working with my dogs. My youngest dog is fairly sensitive to corrections and has not required anything but a flat collar and leash corrections to this point (he is 14 months old now), but I will soon start training him with a remote collar because I take my dogs hiking often and have to be able to recall them when they go into a drive chasing a deer, squirrel or another animal. it would be irresponsible to do anything else. I hope to take your Shelter dog course soon, I have volunteered at a shelter for three years now and would love to have the skills required to help some dogs there avoid being put down.

@Marino Cane Corso Plenty of information out there on some benefits, if you don't buy into them and dig the way you train your dogs that is cool with me, has no impact on me or my dogs. I can only speak for myself and my experiences, I am not a professional dog trainer and have no interest in becoming one. I can tell you I had a much easier time teaching the dog any command that required him going away from me to complete, for instance an emergency down and place at a distance. I also found this dogs engagement level with me is much higher at this stage than my other dogs. Could be due to this style of training or may have nothing to do with it. Come to think of it, the place command itself was much easier this way, but again that is only my experience. A side benefit was it was fun as heck and the dog and I both seem to enjoy it. (Well I know I enjoyed it, the dog seems pretty stoked about it)

@Marino Cane Corso What methods do you use to teach something in 15 minutes? Do you mean just to get the dog to do a command in 15 minutes, or to do you mean to do it reliably on command every time from then on? The latter sounds too good to be true for any method. Most methods take some repetition to mitigate other variables in the environment.

I taught my dog to jump on people so I can teach him to get off of people. I took a bad behaviour and turned it into a command so it no longer became a bad behaviour. I did the same thing with barking. Basically, any unwanted or bad behaviour, I trained it purposefully so it becomes a command. It works LOL 😂. My Doberman doesn't jump on people and he barely barks. Now, the one behaviour I'm having difficulty with is him stealing my clothes! I'll figure something out.

I know that you want an answer from Robert and that I'm not Robert. However, I have heard Robert talk about neutering dogs and what he thinks about it. Robert has said that he believes that a dog's normal state of being is unaltered and intact. He said that an altered dog is not a normal dog because it has been altered from its normal state of being, which is intact. Robert said that people should stop normalizing something that's abnormal. A neutered dog is an altered dog, and an altered dog is an abnormal dog. Robert could answer your question, but he didn't. I did, but I got the answer from Robert, and that's better than nothing. If you don't want to have your dog neutered, then don't. It's your dog. It's your choice. Don't let anyone choose for you, and watch people who want to make your choice for you a little closer. There's something abnormal about those people who want to take your freedom of choice.

@watchmoivies123 you're welcome. Neutering a dog can help with excessive marking, and neutered dogs don't wander off in search of a mate. Neutering also decreases the risk for potential dog fights because, intact, males who usually get along with other dogs will fight when there's a female in heat nearby. You are correct. Neutering will not solve most of the problems that people have with their dogs. If a person can't handle their intact dog, they more than likely won't be able to handle their altered dog either. I don't know how anyone can honestly believe removing a healthy dog's reproductive/hormone generating organs is what's best for it. The health issues that neutering can cause far outweigh any benefit that comes from neutering a healthy dog. Neutering poses health risks to all dogs, but especially large breed dogs that are under a year old. Look up health issues associated with the early neutering of large breed dogs. As well as how neutering affects working dogs. I think you are making the best choice by holding off on neutering your dog. You can always have it done later if you feel like that is what's best for your dog at that time. I think that people should at least wait until the dog is 18 to 24 months old before they have them neutered.

If positive reinforcement is so miraculous technique, which some positive trainers say, that it's possible use for all animals and it works...so here is my question: Why service dogs are chosen so carefully by temper of parents etc., if they could take any agressive dog and train him with positive reinforcement for same thing?! They don't do it, because they knows in core inside them that positive reinforcement isn't so miraculous method. As people are different, dogs too.❤🙏🏻🦋

The transformation of opinions about one thing or another to a universal rule/fact foisted on others who think differently is part of human dna. I say....If you don't believe in "X" (pick your favorite), then don't do "X". How I train my dog, raise my kids, cook my standing rib roast are based on my preferences, my experience and skill all leveraged to achieve my expected results for my situation--all caveated with the car commercial qualifier "your mileage may vary".

Do you believe in neutering male dogs? Many think it not good to de even when growth plates are finished,, Why WOULD I DO THIS? I heard it does not calm down dogs and joints Torn cruciates are high with neutered dogs.. Other then can't reproduce WHAT ELSE IS GOOD neutering??>
@overhead18
@overhead18 Жыл бұрын
My dogs are not neutered, but they are sterile. That being said, if you are curious as to what is good about neutering visit a shelter full of unwanted dogs or think about the hundreds of thousands of unwanted dogs that are killed each year. So the good with neutering is the lack of the ability to reproduce, not much else, IMO.

@@overhead18 well I do agility and I am a very responsible dog owner never bred a dog in my life and never will So, are you saying your dogs have vasectomies? Also, are you saying that other than not being able to reproduce is really the only plus with neutering a dog? Have you ever heard that they say it will, dog calm a down ? but I don’t believe it does do you? I also think after being neutered, they have a larger chance of tearing cruciates and lots more. Do you believe that so if somebody’s very responsible, do you think that’s OK to keep your dog intact? Thank you

I have not yet neutered my almost 2 year old dog as well, and not planning to. Unless it's life and death, he can keep his balls.. lol. So far, the convenience you get if you choose to neuter, your dog won't bother with female dog on heat, and reduce ultra ego between two intact male dogs.

There are so many dogs in shelters for many different when people get a dog but they signed a rental agreement that said there were no dogs allow. So when they are told to either get rid of the dog or move they usually get rid of the dog. Another thing that happens is couples get a dog, but then they make a baby, and raising a dog and a baby is too much for them so they get rid of the dog. Another reason is people getting puppies when their lives slow down such as when they are collecting unemployment, have a break from school, or while healing from an injury. However these slow periods are typically short lived and when things speed up again the dog is nolonger convenient so off to the shelter they go. Puppy blue's is another reason, and it happens when a person gets a puppy but they quickly regret their decision once they realize that having a puppy isn't as fun as playing with someone else puppy. All too often people don't think about what they are getting themselves into when choosing a puppy and they end up with a breed of dog that they have no business owning. People see well behaved examples of difficult working breeds, and since they grew up with a Labradoodle they assume they will end up with a well-behaved working dog like the one they saw. Reality smacks these people in the face after they have gotten the dog, who ends up paying the price for the poor choice that was made. How many times have you heard someone say, I got the dog for my kid? What these people are basically saying is that they got a dog that they didn't want, for their brat kid. Then these people act like they have been burdened by having to take care of the dog. like they are surprised that their kid who doesn't clean their own room won't take care of the dog either. Since nobody wants the dog enough to take care of it, off to the shelter it goes. Another reason is when a young person has recently left their parents home to live on their own. Since they are on their own nobody is there to tell them that they can't have a puppy so they get one. After a year goes by and they have failed at living on their own and are moving back into their parents house and they don't want a dog. You know what happens next. I can go on all day long about why shelters are full of dogs. There are 99 problems but responsible dog owners who did their research on the breed they chose to get at a stable time in their life because they are planning on raising a dog that fits their life which it will be a part of until it dies, aren't one of those problems.
