Dog food is one of the most common tings I'm asked about. What should we feed our dogs? Raw, kibble, home cooked food, keto, grain free, freeze dried.
In this LIVE Chat I will discuss my position on what I feed my dogs.
Visit my site: robertcabral.com for more information on food, training, and giving your dogs the best life possible!

I’m 68, been doing the keto diet for two years. Got rid of my diabetes, my weight is now what it was in my 20s along with my waist. I dropped 6 inches off my waist. My blood pressure went from 150/90 to 106/65. Even got rid of my acid reflux that I had for decades that only took two weeks. Haven’t even had heartburn in two years. So I wanted to do the same for my pups. My Vet talked me out of raw dog food. And from what you said they can have salmonella on their tongue and it doesn’t affect them. And I’m thinking well what about me. I’ve had enough dog saliva in my mouth To probably have dog DNA. Anyway I can’t afford some of those high priced dog foods and I found one that seems reasonable in price definitely and in contents also. Victor Nutra Pro, 92% protein, 1% from vegetables, and only 7% from carbs. It’s made in Texas I’m wondering if you ever heard of it.

Thanks so much for the free content, again. Will def be looking for the membership. I agree that Whole Foods, natural and organic ingredients are key. Though, I keep hearing about how wild canines (hyenas, wild dogs, etc) would not have access to grains. These wild dogs do get grains though the prey animals they eat. If they scavenge an antelope or something of that nature, it will be full of grains and grass it ate prior to death. I own reptiles and we gut load for similar reasons. Just a thought, carbs are not so bad but I agree that they can be limited. Thanks again

Great vid. I especially agree with the weight issue. I see so many rotund dogs that are physically limited by their corpulent shapes :-/ and I understand how hard it is to resist those puppy eyes pleading for treats :-D but one of the best lessons I learned was to incorporate my dogs ration into their treats when training or play. Thanks for being authentic in your vids :-)

I'm only halfway through your video but I wanted to send you a note She has been on Victor hero for almost 6 years.. with red meat can Blue Buffalo 30 lb bag Victor is $63 the Blue Buffalo 12 cans is $40.. So prices have gone up even more since you made this video.. okay so my question is we travel a lot and I can't see how I can do raw when I take her for boarding.. is there a way to get around that?? Thank you for all you are doing, Robert! After switching my dog to raw after kibble, he is a different dog. He has more life in him, his drive is focused, he looks incredible, his coat has a beautiful shine, his skin is so much healthier (suffered with skin allergies), he doesn’t “deposit” as much waste which I believe he’s absorbing more nutrients and minerals. Overall, one of the best decisions I have ever made for his well-being. Keep up the great work!👍 P.S. when dinner time comes he’s always excited to chow down and that never happened with kibble.

On water: whether it is filtered or flown in from the purest source in the world. It costs so little to wash out the bowl and put fresh water in that bowl. With few exceptions, American tap water is more than adequate for hydrating your dog.

@@Rebecca-qx1et so true, my dog gets fresh water at least twice a day with multiple bowls in different rooms but he still prefers to drink straight from the sink or bathtub faucet. He can't reach to drink by himself so he sits right in front of the sink or bathtub and signals ( he eyes the faucet then looks at me repeatedly) and asks for me to turn it on and to pick him up so he can drink. Honestly I think it's super cute that he drinks from the tap so I'm happy to oblige.

They get rinsed and refilled several times daily. I wash them out but with just hot water because I don't want them drinking any soap residue. My pets aren't cork sniffy enough to request Perrier or Evian, they're fine with tap water. My labs will happily drink from a bird bath, puddle in the yard, or swamp, so I don't think they're that fussy to be honest. One of my cats will sit by the sink for an hour waiting for me to turn the faucet on before he'll drink out of a bowl :)

A natural horse healer told me. If you put anything in water. Also have a bowl of neat water next to it. Then the animal will choose what and when it needs. As water is so important in its natural state. My dog is allergic to chicken. Her allergies vanished When it was taken out. The chicken is hidden. My vet found chicken in a food called salmon food. Good to see your opinion on this. I am a vet nurse and always had a special interest in animal nutrition and dog behaviour. I have been in England for 8y and over there most of the trainers were against raw feeding as they claimed the dogs would get hiper and uncontrollable because of the high levels of protein. To me that always sounded b.s. but I am not a trainer so I wouldn't argue the behaviour side of it. Health wise I always believed raw was the best but couldn't speak to much about it because of my colegues were against it and they almost questioned my nursing habilities just because I agreed with raw, or a most natural feeding. No I am back in Portugal and I am fiding people are more open here re this subject and I have been investing quite a bit of time on both my passions. Anyway not going to rumble more but would like to say I love listening to you and you such a balanced reasonable person. Keep up the good work and thank uou for all you do.

A feed nutritionist at a big mill gave me a short course on dog food. If you need to feed kibble make sure the first ingredient is meat. The closer the fat and protein numbers are to each other the better the feed is for your dog. Example a 24% protein and 20% fat is far better than a 28% protein and 14% fat. Fat is extremely important to a dogs health.

EXCELLENT video. Thank you very much for this great information. I found with my GSD, when I changed from kibble to raw, a drastic decrease in the amount of poop generated, also less odor, and healthier consistency. It may seem odd to focus on her poop, but I believe a lot can be derived about the health of our pups by their waste. Also, from the time I brought her home at six months (as a rescue) she constantly wanted to eat her poop, always a race to pick it up before she got it - since going raw she shows no interest in eating it. Anyway, sorry about the not so glamorous topic, but I did want to share my experience if it encourages someone else to try the raw diet, I'm totally sold on it.

I pressure cook then and purée with my immersion blender to add to both raw and cooked foods as a supplement. Mullet is an oily fish and very plentiful and sustainable. Good fats and trace minerals. I also raise cuy (guinea pig) as an efficient small meat stock for humans and our pets. Perfect for small and medium sized dogs!

I’d like to add that cuy is a protein few dogs have demonstrated an allergy to. It’s technically a rodent, if that helps. Very lean, so be aware that you’ll probably need to add fats, perhaps with an oily fish. The bone ratio on them seems good to me, but please do your due diligence if you want to try it out. ✌️

My dogs were raised on a raw diet, never kibble, and they lived a ripe age of 13 for the Boxer and 11 years for the Doberman. And another thing when feeding raw, the dogs drink less water cause there's water in chicken, because of the bones included, never chicken breast. They pooped less too. They also get brown rice along with veggies, raw eggs, etc...

I disinfect my water dishes in the dishwasher 2-3 times/week. Dogs can be prone to UTIs if they don't get fresh water. My guys have allergies so our filter is on the actual tap. Works great for the dogs and us and the filter gets changed out regularly.

I always remember there "salt rule." By law, salt cannot be more than 1% of the food. This, anything listed after salt is barely there.

There’s a food in the UK don’t remember it’s name am awful with certain elements of my memory, but the food mentioned that it contains fruits on the front of the pack, the fruit part was only 0.0008% lol. Found it via photos as I just could not find the brand online, Carnilove Reindeer is the one I’m talking about specifically.
@qwertykotchka394
@qwertykotchka394 3 жыл бұрын
@@CocoonsLastHope I just googled it and certainly you are correct regarding the amounts (0.0008%) but it's not advertised on the front label as being a component so I don't get your point.
@CocoonsLastHope
@CocoonsLastHope 3 жыл бұрын
@@qwertykotchka394 If you bring up a picture of it, it does indeed say forest fruits on the front, which at that dose they may have just not mentioned them at all. It’s likely in order to even get a teaspoon of fruit powder your dog would need to be eating the food several months to a year. Fruit and veggie is very healthy for dogs when given in the right portions which that dry food is not.

I know we don't really have a choice in the matter as most of us aren't filthy rich.. but I hope for a day where the organic and antibiotic/hormone free beef is at the price that the current conventional beef is at. Whether we like it or not, given it's their entire diet if you feed raw, those antibiotics and glyphosate/pesticides/etc in the grains conventional animals are fed has it's toll on any gut/digestive system. Still 1000x better than kibble

I liked feeding raw simply because my dogs seemed much healthier, great energy, weren't always dehydrated and they seemed to grow more "naturally" what made me LOVE raw, was seeing how a litter of puppies came out after mama was raw fed during the pregnancy!!

The abbyssinian breeder my 2 cats came from purchased a huge pro grade blender and would just put in what cats would eat in the wild: a whole bird, in her case the whole raw chicken (no feathers😂). Freeze in aliquots, thaw one every day.

My heart dog is now pushing 11. At 6 he had to stop at rest halfway up the stairs. I was giving him such a tiny bit of kibble I felt like I was starving him, but he was still far overweight. I also have a special needs dog from Afganistan and a whippet Shepard mix. The one thing I hadn't tried was a raw diet. I have no double that 2 of my 3 babies would have gone to the bridge years ago had I not changed their diets to raw. And that 11 YO can now still run up the stairs and jump on my bed.

Robert I rescued an 8 year old staffi who I took to the vet as I thought his tummy wasn't good. Vet put him on allergen prescription food,which is very expensive. But if it helps him I don't mind. Bullbreeds apparently suffer from bad tummies. Thank you for all your help. Vet told me that feeding non grain food leads to heart problems,that's a new paper coming out of the States soon! I thought that is very interesting.

Thanks for this thorough explanation of canine nutrition. My 68 pound Pitbull mix gets 16 oz of Lucy's salmon, quinoa and pumpkin formula and 3 Stella&Chewy's freeze dried raw duck or chicken patties with Grizzly Krill Oil daily. Two year old Coco has been deemed very healthy by her vet. Thanks to you, she is also well disciplined and obedient after a year of following your KZfaq channel. Your videos have been a life saver throughout this pandemic and our subsequent isolation. You are correct. You do offer more excellent free information than any other KZfaq trainer, although I do subscribe to your private lessons so you can continue doing what you do. Following your advice, I am confident that Coco is living the best possible lifestyle of any dog, yours excluded, perhaps. Cheers! Arthur

I have a friend that’s fed his dog nothing but old Roy, 26 years and still getting around like a six year old dog. I believe weight has a lot to do with age . My dog eats corn like there’s no tomorrow, when the corn in the field is just about turning we can’t keep him out of the field. He’s a rescue , he lived on the street. I’m still a firm believer in the neighbors pesticides and chemicals on yards. Dogs love licking keeping clean can be very hazardous.
