It all depends on how you plan to use the Kemper. If you plan to run it direct to your audio interface into your computer, or use a powered speaker cabinet, or use powered studio monitors, or use headphones, then you don’t need a powered unit. If you plan to connect the Kemper to an unpowered speaker cabinet and use it like an amp head, then you’ll need power in the Kemper. I always run my Kemper direct and monitor with either headphones or powered studio monitors so I don't need the powered version.

I’m interested plexi sounds and JCM800 closely the same a friend of mine just brought over a Kemper and 2 Yamaha powered speakers he wants me to try . I have no idea how to hook this thing up

I have a small mixer to which I connect the Kemper, my computer, and everything else, then I use a set of IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitors. Half the time I turn the monitors off and use a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50 headphones. You could get away with just a pair of headphones. You can connect a phone/tablet/computer to the Kemper using an audio cable so you can mix in music.

I tried several different types of mics and miking techniques. The head set is the easiest and sounds the best!

Correct, but you do have limited control of those parameters. However, they’ve now introduced something called liquid profiles that give you more of the control you get from a modeler. You can also add stomps such as boost and overdrive to increase the saturation of your sound.

Personally, I don’t like to put pedals in front of the Kemper. I don’t think they interact with the Kemper like the way pedals interact with a real amp. And it seems silly to me to put pedals into front of the Kemper when the Kemper is loaded with the best amp tones you could ask for, the types of tones pedals try to emulate. Many Kemper profiles, like the ones from Tone Junkie, are profiled with pedals in front of the amps that are being profiled so you hear the pedal interact with the actual amp in the finished product. You would need to mic up the amp and go through the profiling process using the Kemper. If you don't know what you're doing, you're not likely to get a good sound. You need to 1. Know how to dial in good tones on the amp, and 2. know how to mic an amp with a good mic and mic preamp. The room you profile in also plays a role. The process is just like miking an amp in the studio to record.

@@desisernaguitar so from that lost I gather that it is your opinion I need to learn many songs first... is that really the way to go, before allowong to use my own creativity? I just want to express myself through music ... not master 20 strumming techniques... but ok maybe the combination is actually what is important 🙂 more tools in the toolbox

@@gezor20 Music is like language. In order to express yourself in a new language, you first need to learn the language. How are you going to express yourself through music if you can’t play music? If you can’t strum along to songs, how are you going to strum your own songs? Learn how to play songs first. Develop your skills, then you can begin using those skills to create your own music.
