Preach it, metaverse has nothing to do with VR nor blockchains. In fact all metaverses nowadays only exist to push those techs first, wile the metaWorld is a afterthought.

If the metaverse becomes a reality, and companies like facebook are the ones who create it, I feel like it would be a lot like how IOI wanted to make The Oasis if they won the competition, if not worse.

Something that already exists that could resemble a metaverse, is a fediverse. (mastodon, lemmy, matrix, etc) Currently it's mostly used as a decentralized social media, anyone can make their own instance which they can customize, or you can join an existing instance, and then people from different instances can interact with people on other instances, etc. Also, a lot of them use the ActivityPub protocol, so in theory you could make the different ones kinda interact too.

A metaverse could be good, but I feel like for it to be good it has to be controlled by the people instead of by a company or country. That way it will have the best interest of everyone (hopefully).

Technically you aren't logging in to the internet. You are using the internet to connect to a server which you can communicate with using the internet, then you can use that connection to look at content, log into an account, etc. The internet is the bridges, and the websites are the buildings/islands. It's the internet you use to access it all, but each building/island handles their own stuff.

I would rather say that social media is a way to interact with others on the internet rather than a way to access the internet. The computer you use is the thing that accesses the internet, then you can use social media to interact with others who also use the internet.

I have seen it! It’s a fascinating case study of the virtual world aspect of the metaverse. He does a great job of addressing people that claim the metaverse is something that you can already log into and visit, which is obviously not true. The whole platform of decentraland is just a video game and not actually the network that the Metaverse will inevitably become. But yeah, the video is amazing.

Great video! I have two questions fro you, sir. 1) If we're to understand the Metaverse the same way as the Internet, will the Metaverse require even more physical server space as the Internet? At some point, we'll have to take into consideration the effects it has on the environment, but perhaps greed will steamroll past that. 2) Which stock should I buy now to afford my virtual yacht with ~money~ ?

Thank you Charlie! Great questions: 1. The computing power required to power the Metaverse will be astronomically high. Even accounting for Moore’s Law that states that the processing power of computer chips doubles every year, it will still take a long time to get to the point of sustaining a network of interlinked persistent virtual worlds. As for the server space, it’s possible that it might take up the same physical space (remember when 8MB of storage used to take up entire rooms?), but corporations don’t care about any environmental impact and will absolutely just go full steam ahead on these technologies. 2. I’ve heard good things about FTX
