When the exorcist came out, there was nothing else like it, it truly was groundbreaking. I’m 61 years old and I have never seen a movie that even comes close to how the Exorcist scared me. The Tales from the Crypt movies were just coming out, and the character's face was plastered everywhere in the cinema and would have to hide in my mom's arms as we walked down the aisle to our movie. Nowadays, I started watching the old TV show and I was tickled by how tongue in cheek the stories were, also it was fun to see well-known actors do their earlier work. I just found your channel, and am obsessed with your content. I love topics like this. It really is such a broad question to answer because it is completely subjective; you're totally right. Objectively, the overwhelming acclaim for The Exorcist could absolutely make it the scariest film ever made. However, when I first saw it, I really wasn't scared at all. I think I learned too much about how it was made, the practical effects, etc., and so I was taken out of what could have been a really horrifying experience. I'll have to watch it again; it's been a very long time. My pick for the scariest film ever made (or the film that affected me the most) would have to be Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I have never been more viscerally affected by a film. I couldn't move for an hour after I first watched it, and I was filled with such disgust and dread. It's interesting to see how your collective lists played out (very happy to see such love for Hereditary; that film changed my life and affected me greatly). Looking forward to more content!!

Hereditary is one of the most harrowing and emotional horror movies I think, the scene where Toni Collette is crying and wailing after Charlie dies is one of the most painful bits of film I've ever seen - genuinely horrifying, I went to see it on my own at the cinema and I've never needed a hug so much after watching a film. So good and so deserving of all the nominations for this list! Also the Blaire Witch Project is so unsettling and creepy and freaked me out, I have no shame in saying it's scary!

Thanks for going through all those platforms and data to put this together. Normally these lists will have a few good picks and then a bunch of titles like Annabelle, but every movie you mention is spectacular in some way. They may not all scare me (Psycho) or they may not scare me anymore (I was lucky enough to see Jaws and Poltergeist in the theatres when I was young) but I can easily see how each of them could keep someone up at night. Or away from the beach. I’m surprised The Omen and Se7en didn’t make the list anywhere. Part of me thinks it’s the age bracket, but every list has The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw, and Blair Witch. @@flip9986 i don't know man, Rosmary baby was more of a scary one for me, but eyes without a face i think the reason it scared me that much was that i watched it as a kid and had numerous nightmares about it... if my choice was the atmospheric and unsettling there were other choices like Rabbits or Mullholland Drive or Cache (from haneke) but even for funny games i consider it as more of a scary film cause it's way more generic than his other films and uses horror film's techniques to shock and scare you

My husband and I just saw As Above, So Below for the first time this week and he loved it. I'd put off watching it for so long because when it came out there had been far too many poorly done found footage movies and it got bad reviews so I didn't want to waste my time on it. I was pleasantly surprised by it; was it great? Not in my opinion but it did deserve to be rated better.

I saw the exorcist when it came out with my girlfriend (who is now my wife) and our two best friends. I am hoping that my age doesn’t diminish me as a member of your fan group... I am extremely young at heart. I’ve got to say I was very impressed with the list of movies you came up with in your research. It gives me faith in the Awareness and knowledge of these horror enthusiast. These are for the most part high quality films, really the best of the best. The only movie on the list I haven’t seen is the infamous Texas chainsaw massacre. I gravitate more to a movie that is story driven not gory driven. My favorite type of movie is psychological horror. I do think that most of the movies on this list.Fall into that category. I’ve watched a couple of your other videos and I enjoy your presentations quite a bit. I subscribed and gave you the thumbs up. Looking forward to using your videos to find some newer movies to enjoy.

Not an easy question, whatever you pick, not everyone will agree. Some will say its overrated. Its hard to pick one film but for me, it should be something that could actually happen like Black Christmas or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Psychological horror can work at times like the Shining. Hell when I was a kid, I thought the Gate was the scariest film I ever seen, silly to think that but its still a fun movie. People will say the Exorcist even though Friedkin doesn't think its a horror movie, its more of a documentary which makes it realistic or as he would say, its the mystery of faith. Plus there are hidden themes of sexual abuse which I'm sure some of you have seen Rob Ager's analysis. Films like the Shining might not scare you anymore but they have moments that can get under your skin especially with the music like the Room 237 scene from beginning to end and with no jump scare at all. Plus its fun to know people's favorite horror movies or films that scared them, you might get something you wouldn't expect like Creepshow. But lets be honest, its probably the emoji movie.

I think that the exorcist is a experience you have to go through without spoilers, by yourself and in the dark. Also, when you are young. I remember when I watched it, and I have been seeing horror movies my whole life. I was so shocked by it, I probably spend a few days thinking about the movie. And that's to me a sign that the movie is good. The atmosphere, the acting, the special effects. Everything in it was so well done, it was horror taken seriously, without trying to follow a formula or trying to do something that is not. The book is pretty good too btw, it explains a lot of stuff that was left out of the movie. I'm not surprised and I'm not mad either with the results, some people may not care about the movie, but if are susceptible to the movie The Exorcist is a experience that is so unique and unforgettable.

I'm glad I found this channel, it provides me a lot of material that I'd otherwise miss. I skew way older than your demographic being in my 60s, so I definitely am totally surprised by the appearance of The Ring, Blair Witch and Hereditary. I think because I hated those 3 movies so much, almost immediately, I could never suspend disbelief enough to let any spookiness penetrate. Just eye-rollingly bad in my mind, like The Grudge, with all of those leaving me scratching my head, wondering what happened to Nightmare on Elm Street or even The Omen or Carrie. I would've guessed the Exorcist, with its body horror, and crazy head-spinning effects, but I felt that it's pretty dated. Also, I might've put The Ritual in placed of Blair Witch and Midsomar in place of Heredity, then crossed it off, because, while interesting, it's not frightening, really, and Wicker Man was a far better movie. I thought the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was not very scary and not a particularly good movie and I'd say I Spit on Your Grave was better from that era, though, technically not scary, if you're not female, but a very satisfying revenge flick. I haven't seen Martyrs yet, although I finally found it on Tubi so it's in the queue. There were other movies that are better horror movies than all of those, like The Witch, which is more ominous than scary and better ghost stories like The Devil's Backbone or any number of Del Torro movies, which should replace found footage clunkers like Paranormal Activity. It's a difficult problem, creepiness, ominousness, suspense, acting performances and visuals all play into the enjoyment of the horror genre. I personally would watch ANYTHING with Art The Clown in it, because he's just the epitome of the clown killer trope. But, not particularly scary. I think Halloween was a good balance between ominous, jump scares, and creepiness and it I saw it as a teen, and that and Carrie were probably my first genuinely scary movie theater experiences back in the 70s. The versions of the Exorcist and The Omen were all edited for television in the 70s and I didn't see them in full until the advent of home video late in the 80s. Anyway, cheers. Great channel, keep refining your craft.

I know Jaws may seem dated by today's standards, but when I was a kid many men, women, and children of all ages were genuinely terrified to go into the water after seeing the film. No modern horror film has had that effect on people, to my knowledge. I know Psycho made some women afraid of taking a shower, but I can't think of another horror film that has had the impact of Jaws, culturally speaking. As to the two popular found footage films on this list, they are more boring and unintentionally funny than anything. Rec is one of the few good examples of found footage films out there, but as you said, it's all subjective. Thank you for this video, Emma!

I'm one of that minute 1% of your older demographic (55+), so I saw a lot of these movies when they were first released. I have to say, Night of the Living Dead completely freaked me out as an 8 year old kid. I know it's "tame" by today's standards, but is still one of the scariest films ever. I also saw The Exorcist and Alien in theaters, and both were profoundly scary. Believe it or not, The Poseidon Adventure also scared me as a child -- saw it in a theater by myself and was really frightened by the upside-down atmosphere and bodies floating in the water and burned by fire. Requiem for a Dream (while not specifically "horror") left me feeling uneasy for days after seeing it. But by far the movie that's hit me the hardest in the last 10 years has been Hereditary. After that and Midsommar, Ari Aster could never make another movie again and I'd still rank him right up there with Romero, Carpenter and Kubrick as one of the best horror movie directors out there. Also huge props to Jordan Peele for surprising everyone with his horror chops by directing Get Out and Us!

Ju-On : The Grudge always scared me far more than either rendition of The Ring. It might have been because I saw Ju-On when I was a child and The Ring as a 14 year old though. The one to do it for me in theaters though, has always been the first Insidious. I was not expecting it to be anywhere as near as scary as it was, still only 13 years old, and was just gettin into horror. As a 23 year old, I still find some of the scares in that film to be quite inventive (ex- the alarm system and door scene, baby monitor), and dig the camerawork. Arthouse horror films intrigue me more than they scare me , but Hereditary definitely gave me the creeps more than any other horror movie in recent memory.

You should try juon the curse 2... much more scarier than any juon franchise. I don't know where to find the movie since it was a TV movie,.. but i think they had it on youtube

Insidious is about astral projection which a lot of people do on purpose, they train for it, in order to get there. the astral realm. it doesn't have to be a horror experience. sleep paralysis is another look into the astral realm that people experience without purpose. it can be the scariest experience in life, for everyone. subconsciously we know that realm does exist, we are there almost every day, between sleeping and being awake for a short period of time when we experience so-called "hypnagogia" which is another word in textbooks for: we don't know what it is, and why, but we have no other explanation than that: these are dreamlike hallucinations, generated by brains that don't have better things to do. (.....) the only true fact is, that they don't even know what hallucinations are, dreams, and who is writing the story of what we experience in dreams or hallucinations, how are they generated, are they even generated or are we only observers? and so on.

holy fuck! that are really amazing lists!!! I agree with almost all the movies in those lists to be the scariest movies. also, you did a hard work with all the statistic thing! I only missed a few films The Exorcist III , it has some scenes that made me shit my pants The Grudge, yes, the remake, with Buffy City of the Living Dead, as many of other Lucio Fulci's films, it has a dark and tense atmosphere that keep you scared the entire movie

"The Shining" is so good - and on the surface is scary... That being said - once you decode it - it flips the tension/mood/feeling and it becomes something else. The movie becomes something else... The sub-story takes dominance... If you know what I'm writing about - then you know - and I won't betray its secrets here. Look for yourself. If you missed it - look deeper. For my #1 - I would choose "Hereditary". There's not many films I find "scary" - but "Hereditary" is disturbing - and thought provoking. I find it to be thickly layered and complicated on a psychological level. From its initial shock moment - the film moves forward at a slow pace - creating an atmosphere of complete hopelessness. As a comparison to "The Exorcist" - it too is a film that creates an increasing dark dread within the viewer - first with the MacNeils in trying to discover what is wrong with Regan - and then with Father Karrass in the loss of his mother - the guilt he feels - and his dealings with the possessed child and standing alone in his belief about the possession. That build-up of hopelessness is somewhat lifted with the arrival of Father Merrin - which is clearly intended as a set-up for the reprieve to ring false a little later in the film. It's in "Hereditary" where the sense of hopelessness - this darkness that's inescapable - never lets up - even for a moment. It is a descending journey with no way out. On a side note - I also quite enjoyed "The VVitch" - but interestingly - it and "Hereditary" have a few common threads. Has anyone else noticed this? Anyway, that's all I have to say.

I saw The Exorcist as a kid,and I think the older I got,the scarier it got. I can watch just about anything without genuinely being scared, but the idea of possession terrifies me! Having said that,I saw The Exorcism of Emily Rose in the theater, and that freaked me hell out. Jennifer Carpenter is a truly phenomenal actress

Yeah I stay away from possession movies because I know they are 100 percent real life situations where they truly happen. I just don't like that being portrayed as entertainment. It is really bad for those who are possessed.
