Great video 😊 so much truth. My son is only 3 and was diagnose right before turning 3. I cry often...sometimes because I'm tired, sometimes frustrated, I'm heartbroken, because I love my son so much, and mostly because I'm scared of the unknown. Of course we have a lot of joy as well! And like you said, some basic milestones we totally party for! Joseph started helping us pull up his pull up and pants for the first time and we cheer every time he helps.

I have a child with PDD-NOS, anxiety disorder and Mixed Receptive-Expressive Language Disorder. Even though my child is high functioning, my husband and I said our next house should have an in-law apartment in case our child lives with us for the long-term.

You have completely hit the nail on the head. I have shared with you before but my 13 year old has autism, adhd, anxiety disorder, sensory integration disorder, and intellectual disability. Those are intellectual disorders, we struggle with all his medical issues as well. Our biggest problem is that doctors brush off a lot of his intellectual issues because his medical problems are higher on the list. I have no friends..I feel that completely.

Thank you!!! I had no idea I have been living in the future with fear, no matter how far we come, no matter how well he does, no matter how much he overcomes and surprises me, I still look to the future and live in fear. As of today, I am stopping this. Because of you.

My son was diagnosed with a learning form of autism spectrum disorder a few weeks before he turned 3 in March of this year. Although I suspected it for a while, nothing really prepared me to hear that he wasn't going to learn like my daughter or his brothers. It's been a few months and I'm still processing and trying to learn what I need to I order to make things effective on him all while fighting depression and exhaustion. I feel like parents talking about what it's like to raise an autistic child is taboo. Like you said, everyone is going to have an opinion. I appreciate the total honesty and candidness about your experience. Most times I feel alone and second guess everything that I do on this journey.

I know many people offer up suggestions, but check out Brain Balance Achievement Center. There may be one in your area. They won't claim to "cure" anything, but they can help with some of the symptoms associated with autism like meltdowns, dealing with sensory overload, social skills, etc. My brother has autism (mild-moderate) and can now drive and attend welding school. I also manage a center in Florida after seeing his results (as well as my own for ADHD). It's a non medical approach that can bring some relief to the suffering you talked about.

I do agree with all these, fantastic tips! Our son is 5, and he is currently on the pathway for a potential ASD diagnosis, if not diagnosed with ASD we will be referred to a Mental health team to assess him further for possible other explanations to his behaviour and traits.

This was really interesting to know. Ry's friend at school has aspergers or so they think. He's amazing and so funny but a handful. You are a great mom! I love that room

My son has asd we were never given a severity. I haven't felt welcome in any asd communities because my son can speak. He has no social skills and when it comes to communicating his needs he might as well not be able to speak. His brothers may also be on the spectrum. We are in the trenches right now for sure.

Oh ok. I was wondering because I know others who had their kids recently diagnosed and didn't get a severity either. We just take it one day at a time. Can't do anything else. Homeschooling gives us a great opportunity to see how unique their minds are. :)

I have it to and I won't like. I hate it and that I wish I was normal. I refuse to tell people about it because they don't understand no two people on the spectrum are the same, that it works differently on everyone. I agree with you on the holding down a job with the sensory overload and stuff. My mom didn't know until I was 15. I agreed with you on people thinking your child is a brat and not that they are autistic, people always are quick to judge.

Could intellectual disability change over time? I know with my sister she was considered to be ID until she was 15, when her full scale iq was at 73, slightly above the requirement for ID.

There is nothing to be scared of whilst having an autistic child. This may happen to you, but it is different with other people. This is not very accurate nor acceptable. Not going to approve. Get advice from an autistic person instead. 😑
