Laureles is a residential neighborhood in Medellin. It's very popular among expats and digital nomads, and it's not hard to see why. In this video, I explore the area and give some tips on things to do, food, drinks, and safety.
Check out What it's like in El Poblado: • What it's like in El P...

I just visited Medellin in April, and Laureles was the second place I stayed at. I had no idea about the different barrios before I went there, but I was pleasantly surprised by everything in Laureles. It was great. My favorite when compared to the other barrios. Guatape was a great city too, and the mountain up there with the shopping plaza was great too. Everyone was super nice and friendly. It was a great experience. I got to walk around the Laureles area too, and noticed in the city center some corporate buildings, my favorite of which was the Disney building. I thought that was pretty cool. There is also a 24 hour McDonalds open around there, and they have some cool stuff. You have to check it out, way more than a typical american McDonalds, especially the ice cream treats. The cc mall was really cool too, and they have a nice food court, gym and supermarket there. It was so cool.

Nice piece of advice about the use of local language. Thanks.

If you travel to several countries with several different languages it really doesn't make sense to try to learn multiple languages unless you have a good natural ability at it which most people do not. There is a reason why older immigrants to the United States have great difficulty learning English and the reverse is true.

I have to say you nailed it. I've been in Laureles more than 7 years and couldn't disagree with anything you say.

Hi 👋 I’m considering a move there from the US. Would you be able to recommend any sites to find (furnished) apartment rentals for maybe 6-12 months at a time that have normal (not gringo) pricing? I’ve only found one and it had basically Airbnb pricing $$$

@@CaitlinConCuore I'm told Facebook has some good leads. There is another little strategy that I employed; that of making an exhaustive search of Airbnb, finally finding an excellent price and booking for one month. That month allowed me to get my bearings and find an even better situation. In my case it was renting an apartment unfurnished and buying my own furniture. To duplicate that today may require quite a bit of patience in the sense that the rental market has tightened. Maybe be prepared to rent a furnished place until you can settle in. Lots of people do it. A month convinced me that I could be happy as a permanent resident. Rents in Laureles will be far less than in El Poblado. Before you book you could send me the listing if you like. I know Laureles well. I've seen unscrupulous ads for apartments that claim to be in Laureles but are not in Laureles or else they're in Laureles Estadio which is not nearly as comfy. Once I got to know the place I realised that It's as close as I'll ever come to ideal. Naturally you'll need to obtain a vsa and a "cedula". There are experienced people who can handle it for you. I made that first on my list. Best of luck.

@@gnolan4281 oh wow, thank you so much! Your idea sounds smart and is similar to what I was thinking about. I’ve never actually been to Medellin but lived in Bogota for a summer years ago. I was thinking of doing kind of a vacation/scouting trip there and trying to find places in person or see if any of the Airbnb places will make deals off site. I’m still investigating the idea of moving there right now so I’m just eager to see what I could get for how much. You mentioned sending a listing to you-would you mind sharing your contact info? I’m not sure how you’d do it privately… maybe post and delete? I’d love to connect for the occasional question if you wouldn’t mind-I promise I won’t be a bother! ❤️

@@CaitlinConCuore Just respond by adding to this thread at first. Once you arrive I'll give ya direct contact information and buy you a coffee eh? Two cities in Colombia could not be more dissimilar than Bogota and Medellin which is at the same altitude as Denver but has almost the same vegeatation as Miami. Medellin is more relaxed, safer, friendly and prices are somewhere in the neighborhood of 20% less.

@@gnolan4281 yes! It really seems to be a city that arose in the rainforest ❤️ While I did love the climate in Bogota which feels like autumn to me (a lovely break from the heat and humidity of Texas), a smaller and more lush city with good public transit is appealing. That’s why I’m looking at Medellin. Thank goodness for YT videos! Okay, I will save this video to comment back on to you. Hopefully I can make this happen later this year 🙏Thanks for your friendliness! ☺️

Thanks for your video. Where do older folks without cars live near amenities in quiet areas of Laureles? Is it around Setenta? How are medical services in Laureles? Do you have any videos comparing Laureles to similar places in Cali? Or Pereira and Rio Hacha as smaller alternatives?

Tourists should be nothing but respectful to anyone and everyone, unless someone is committing a crime against you, when visiting a foreign country, especially service staff.
