It's the furthest Italian car from a Ferrari, and according to Jason, just as fun.

I'm italian and i assure you that an Ape Car has nothing to compare with a Reliant Robin. This is a pure, economic, reliable, funny car/motorcycle/van, perfect for carrying loads. Yes it's very slow (40 km/h maybe), but only because it is not made to go fast. i can assure you that i saw it bring 12-13 people on the cabinet without the minum problem or hint of fatigue. It's simply brilliant. And that's why in Italy we have many.

I'm collecting old jeans to make chair covers. A lot of people throw couches away because the upholstering has gone bad (think of leather) but some have perfectly fine filling (probably they were very expensive at some point) so my idea is to just redo those with a buch of old jeans.

+ilikepie1974 Perhaps literally, given that it's just a little 2-stroke jobbie. They're not made for speed, just for tugging half a ton of potatoes five miles along the road somewhat faster than you could manage it by hand :D (and it's a step up from those put-put "2 wheel tractor" devices that work as a hand-steered self-propelled plough out in the field, then can have the blades taken off and a trailer hooked up instead to move stuff along at jogging pace ... the 50cc Ape can hit 40+ km/h on the flat when unladen after all... maybe as much as 80 for the hefty 220cc version...) Sort of like how you can make a go-kart with a lawnmower engine, and a ride-on mower bridges the gap in a more official capacity. You get a surprising amount of power out of a leafblower engine, or that of a ride-on mower. Don't let the speed mislead you, merely because it's geared real low doesn't mean it hasn't got any muscle. The one my dad used to have put out more power than my bike, but the latter can nudge 70mph whilst the former was tapped out somewhere south of 10mph...I do think he never got out of first or maybe second gear, though, and gassed it pretty hard. It was literally a quick 5-minute runaround. Cruising, it'd be a fair bit quieter. You don't hammer utility vehicles that hard if you want them to last, anyway. As little power and speed as you can reasonably get away with is key.

This small trucks are used in Belgrade, Serbia by utility company. They are great because they are small and yet you can drive them in narrowest of streets, down sidewalks and parks for cleaning junk and leafs.
@mspenrice
@mspenrice 8 жыл бұрын
+Mladen Milić There are 4-wheeled equivalents being used here in the UK now as well, I think they even have a Piaggio badge on though I could be wrong. Certainly based on some kind of European microcar. Even have a badge on the back saying they're limited to 45mph (70~75km/h) which strikes me as something I once heard of certain microcars / 3-wheel trucks being limited to. Box vans rather than flatbed but otherwise a similar idea, something small, cheap, and super economical that can be parked almost anywhere and fit down narrow alleyways in order to carry out a variety of low level maintenance jobs around the city from a central council-run base. Probably be converted to electric power before too long, but they seem to be using lawnmower engines at the moment from the exhaust sound. Never goes more than 30 miles from the home base, never covers more than maybe 100 miles in a day, and rarely goes on roads with a speed limit higher than 50mph (80km/h) for any significant distance (mainly 20-30mph instead), so no need to make it fast, or give it sporty handling, or even a massive load capacity...
@folgore1
@folgore1 5 жыл бұрын
My cousin in Sicily has one of these! They make perfect sense in ancient Italian villages with narrow alleys and few roads suitable for modern traffic. I found this out the hard way when I took my father back to the old Sicilian village where he was born last summer. At the airport, I told the rent-a-car people I needed a vehicle with an automatic. They gave me an SUV! Let's just say I ended up using reverse gear very frequently while in his village...

It also uses a handlebar as opposed to a steering wheel. It's basically a 3 wheel Vespa (shares the engine, handlebars, front wheel, etc.) with a flatbed.

+Frontality i have one to, they are pretty fun to drive :D. mine broke tho sow i replaced the crankshaft with a cnc turned straight shaft and put a 200cc 5hp b&S engine on it that revs to about 5500rpm. i thought the original two stroke engine made more revs than that sow i increased the rpm with a belt. its now way to fast, almost hits 25km/h in first gear... It still looks original from the inside and all the controls work like they used to before. it's nice but not ideal for my utility purposes i use the ape for.

I’d love to have one of these, and I’m an F150 guy! I have 3 f150s currently, and had 2 more in the past. Love this guys channel, I’m subscribed. I’ve been wanting to build something really light so I can use a spare 5 speed peerless manual transmission I have with another spare engine I have somewhere between 8-19 horse. I have several older riding mowers I need to get rid off to Rob parts. Something to run around on the farm at slower speeds and carry supplies and hardware, and nimble.

Funny thing about the Ape is that it shares its engine with Vespa.Now, that wouldn't mean much, but this also mean that all those juicy afermarket engnes designed for the Vespa fit in the Ape. This includes the FALC 180 engine, which is a 180cc which is supposed to replace the stock engine in the 50cc Vespas. Or you could just butcher an Ape and fit it with an Alfa V6. Your choice.

In 2006, I was in Bolzano, Italy with family friends. I was on foot and my friends had headed to the train station while I stayed behind to take some pictures. To make up lost time, I stuck out my thumb and was picked up by a local farmer in one of these. He spoke no English, and I have no Italian, but he gave me a ride to the train station. The ride was about like this video. Fun.
