Bonhams influence is immeasurable. From his music to “animal” the muppet drummer being based on him. He changed to world. When I saw use your illusion in 91 and the biggest band in the world at the time did a drum solo they played Bonzo’s Montreux note for note for note. Simply the greatest drummer to ever exist.

the way I always interpreted him is that everyone else laid down a beat, a rhythm...but Bonhams drumming had both rhythm AND melody (to my ear) and sounded like another musical instrument rather than just a beat. Remarkable. And the power with which he hammered them sometimes. He was the goat. #1 drummer of the 20th century.

And keep in mind Bonham played with one bass drum pedal, just his right foot, there's are bass drum rhythms he plays that a few drummer friends of mine can only play with a double-bass drum pedal, but then it doesn't sound right; watching and hearing them play along with Bonham is humorous because they (no one?) can ever get those beats and rhythms just right and they get so frustrated, those ghost notes on the snare, the triplets, and the tone of his bass drum is unique, the bass drum head sounds tuned so low it kind of "flubbers"

This is the old fashion way. Before being able to do what he did with the bass drum pedal, he had to get over an extremely painfull practice. I couldn't, my peg was too hurtfull but anyway I started playing drums too late for my peg to adapt itself easily as I already turned 18. So I took the easy way, the way most of modern drummers take, I played with my heel up and used my sole as the only contact with the pedal. I can't stand 2mn with my heel on the pedal. An other thing that has disappear from modern drumming is the number of times both hands are used at the same time. I had the same problem, I started too late for my left wrist to became flexible enough to go as fast as my right hand.

I think what's lacking in so many rock drummers these days is that appreciation of jazz, motown, funk and/or disco. It's so nice to hear that executed by a caveman who's bashing his giant drums with tree trunks, slipping in all these little triplets and shuffles. You can hear it in Dave Grohl's drumming too. Damn, it's so, so good!

4:10 makes so much sense.. I've never thought of it that way. Most drummers and bassist are in the background keeping time and structure while the vocal and leads play over them.. points out why Dinosaur Jr. is so good. Lead man singer/guitarist was a drummer before learning guitar so he thinks in the same way Bonzo did I'm sure.

John Bonham was truly a gifted Rock drummer, no question about that. his influences were many of the phenomenal Jazz drummers of the time. Drummers like, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Max Roach, Joe Morello, and others. He wasn't a "technical" drummer like his Jazz hero's, taking drum lessons and reading music, he was a self-taught drummer. Bonhams' tragic death at such a young age, (32), rocked, (no pun intended), the other members of LZ. They had been rehearsing for an upcoming North American Tour the end of 1980. He had been a 12 hour drinking binge that started around noon on September 24th 1980 and lasted until about midnight, it was reported he had consumed 40 units of vodka. The UKs recommended maximum intake of alcoholic beverages per day for men is 3 to 4 units. He passed out and on a couch, someone put him to bed. Sometime during the night he choked to death on his own vomit. John Paul Jones, (led Zep bassist), and a Led Zep road manger found him the next morning, dead at 32 years old.

"That's a lot of numbers".6:00 One of the best aspects of LED Zeppelin besides their multi diverse moods in writing are some of the core Rythm & Blues that they drew from. Songs like "Since I've been loving you" and "Whole Lotta Love" were not their originals but were R&B tunes performed earlier by other artists.(Moby Grape, and Muddy Waters, respectively) The beauty here being how many bands (i.e. Humble Pie, Clapton, J Gail's, etc, etc) took R&B to incredible heights. John Bonham was one of those very best in drummers. Too many to list, but he was indeed iconic. "Fool in the Rain" is nearly identical to the "Purdy Shuffle" (Bernard Purdy). But the narrator never mentions that. Nice to see that you're diving into origins, just like those cats did as well! Be well! : )

Many don't have the mental capabilities to dive into genres/subjects they have no interest in, they can't open their minds enough to see evolution! The ones that do, understand the importance in "open book" type mentality. Knowledge is wisdom, being able to appreciate is something u can't teach. "Respect our elders" and "never judge a book by its cover" are the 2 most important quotes in life imo. **Sorry so long, Its awesome seeing a younger gen. learn the evolution of music. Led Zeppelin was big in the movement. Before them it was bands like Animals wearing suits on stage. Anyway, I got mad RESPECT for ya, open mindedness is a forever quality! I subbed and looked forward to more of your content! When we as humans, unite and work together/through our differences the world will see evolution, if we continue to divide over "manipulation by way of televised programming" Big corporate wins and become 100% enslaved/controlled/chipped!
