Why The Lego Movie 2 Wasn't Awesome

When the first LEGO Movie was announced, it seemed like an obvious marketing campaign for the LEGO brand to sell more toys. What we got however, was a truly unique story and next level animation from a team that revolutionized the way real world toys could be animated. But for it's sequel, The LEGO Movie 2 The Second Part, it seemed audiences were not as amazed at the little innovation that transpired between films. So what made The LEGO Movie 2 such a disappointment?

The idea that people were getting tired of the Lego movie’s visual style is quite frustrating when most animated films were sticking to the same CG style at that time anyway.

I think it's less people getting tired of it and more it not being groundbreaking in the way the 1st movie was. I think you can say the same thing about Toy Story, part of what made it incredible was that no one had done it before
@InvaderZim897
@InvaderZim897 10 ай бұрын
@@barmanitan That's true, but cinema animation has just been saturated with CG in general. Sure, Spiderverse breathed some new life into it but personally I'm more than ready for traditional animation to make a comeback. It's been seen as "obsolete" for too long. I don't even need it to replace CG but if we need animated movies to have more unique styles it would be great if we could get rid of these arbitrary limits.

@ichaseiyoutube It would be nice if we could stop acting like hand drawn animation is outdated; it has a lot more potential for stylistic differences. I don’t think anyone ever got tired of it until CG happened and it became like a shiny new toy. Edit: Just realized I already said that in my previous reply but screw it, I can’t say it enough.

I was just disappointed with Rex Dangervest and how he was a typical twist villain. Being an alternate future version of Emmet wasn't a bad idea, but the way it was executed was just underwhelming. The fact that both Rex and Emmet were voiced by Chris Pratt made the twist SUPER obvious.

I personally think the biggest problem was the plot. In the first movie, you had a clear end goal: Stop Lord Business. This was achieved in a great way in that Emmet makes Lord Business understand that individuality is important, and that everyone should have a chance to make something different from everyone else. The sequal felt lacking in these aspects. The clear end goal (for the beginning) was to stop Queen Whatevra Wannabi. But then the whole brainwashing thing happened, and then suddenly you have this mess where Emmet's actions are different from everyone else's. At the end of the movie we find that Queen Whatevra Wannabi was never the villain. But this fact feels... annoying. The whole movie was spent dramatizing a big battle or something between just Emmet and the Queen. And while that battle still happened between Emmet and Rex, it had close to no buildup, and just felt... anticlimactic.

That’s not really the point of the movie tho. The point (like with first film) wasn’t actually the Lego aspect of the film at all. It was the real world conflict. It came out as a surprise for the climax in the first film, but then once the twist came, it gave the whole film a new meaning. About a creative Son feeling limited by his all-business father, until at the end those walls break down, and the Dad allows his Son to be himself and embrace his imagination, not worrying about perfection, but creativity. Lego Movie 2’s conflict isn’t about Emmet Vs an “evil” Queen. It’s about 2 siblings. A young boy, dealing with growing up and what that means. He doesn’t want to allow vulnerability or colorful stuff into his world, because that’s not “tough” and “manly”, which is characterized in Rex (the version of himself that he thinks he needs to grow up to be) And his conflict with his “annoying” younger sister. To the point where their mother makes them put their toys away because they can’t play nice. To him, his sister’s the bad guy, because she’s causing trouble for his world. But his little sister just wants to play with his big brother, she didn’t want to cause conflict, but the boy didn’t want to allow his sister’s creativity into his world, cause that’s not manly. The Queen originally came from the boy as a gift to the girl, in the beginning of the film. The boy states it can be “whatever you want it to be”, then as he got a bit older, he lost sight of that. The Queen entering his world was the sister trying to remind the boy of what he gave HER. In the end, he realizes that he CAN have vulnerability, he can have other people in his life. Once that happens, that part of himself he thinks he needs to be (Rex) disappears. And his Lego world is no longer dark and brooding and “manly”, like in the beginning, but it’s a mix of his and his sister’s world, and he opens up to the colorful and fun things. The Queen was never the Villain because she represented his sister, who the brother found out was never the villain, and instead it was Rex, who represented the mind state he thought he needed to have. The whole movie is an illustration. If you just view it as an animated adventure movie, maybe it may not seem as exciting or fresh as the first film, which had more of an actual straightforward Lego adventure. Lego 2 was written as more of an allegory.

Never saw The Second Part but The Lego Batman movie was so good and it is very sad we’ll never see the sequel. The moral of the story is, movie publishers are stupid, they give people money and freedom to make a passion project hoping it will break even. I think also has to do with the fact that there wasn't much publicity about the film, I mean I didn't find out about this film until years later and I loved the first film and was hoping for a sequel. I finished watching the second full movie exactly two days ago, and I actually loved it more than I expected, because of all those comments that it wasn't as good as the first, of course it's not as good as the first but still exceeded my expectations. I really think the Ninjago movie hurt the franchise the worst, because it proved they only had one idea to go with, even when it made no sense with the world that existed. Ninjago already had multiple seasons of a series by that point, so they'd developed a ton of lore and characters over that time. The movie threw all that out in favor of rehashing the same tone as the other Lego movies. I think the second Lego movie could have done fine if Ninjago had shown that they could do something different, story-wise, in between the two movies. My son is still watching and rewatching the Ninjago series to this day, but I think he's forgotten the movie even exists at this point. It was easily the worst Lego movie.

I feel like it was a natural evolution of the narrative from the first movies; the movement from parent/child to siblings made a lot of sense. One of the biggest problems I had with this film is how they handled Rex Dangervest as a character. Not only is the twist with him actually being Emmet from the future so oblivious that you can't help but groan, but he feels like an excuse to have a twist villian just because it was popular at the time (and even then people were getting sick of it) I think instead they should've had it where he was actually trying to prevent Armamageddon after he lost his friends, thinking the reason why he failed was because he wasn't tough enough so he goes back in time to help Emmet be tough, thinking that will stop Armamageddon. However the way he went at it (choosing violence and not listening to others) only causes Armamageddon to happen again. Its only when he and Emmet realise that you don't need to be tough to be strong and its good to understand both sides is when Rex realises his mistakes and helps Emmet to fix them, ultimately sacrificing his existence in the process

I would also add that they didn't utilize all the great characters that were more of a focus in the first movie. Unikitty, Benny, Batman, and many others were barely in it. Instead they focused on Rex and he didn't do anything to make the story great. Although I love the LEGO Batman Movie I think WB should have put more though into not what but who made the first movie so good, imaginative people like Lord and Miller, you can feel the passion behind each scene of the movie, it had humour that surprised you, a plot that moved fast, jokes that aren't so in your face you wanna die and characters that even tho fall into some stereotypes, aren't two dimensional, I hope we can someday watch Emmet again, because he is not ironically my favorite character of all time

@KaminoKatie True, yes; but a large U.S. opening is still considered important for a "successful" release. As stated in the video, even as it was, it was quite successful in making a profit. It was just the precession in so far as whether the studio wanted to make more.

There are 2 simple reasons why I really don't like this movie: 1. it was advertised as a post-apocalyptic movie with really cool atmosphere and sick character designs, that's what 90% of the trailers and posters show, but in the movie they abandoned it all after first 10 minutes. 2. All the side characters got kidnapped and were absent from the adventure, and they were my favorite part of the first movie. I wouldn't say that they were super important there but at least everyone got their moments to shine and they stayed together all the time. Also Lord Business just dipped at the start of the movie and had no purpose in the story.

The problem is that studios are so starved for ideas they try to make anything and everything a franchise. This (usually) goes against what made the original work in the first place: it’s originality. When we have a wonderfully created, brilliantly written piece of nostalgic cinema it’s great and fulfilling. When we have multiple pieces of wonderfully created, brilliantly written pieces of nostalgic cinema it becomes the norm, and therefore mundane. It loses its originality by its very existence. When everything is special, nothing is special.

Imo the 2nd one had more relatable messages and themes. I remember being young and like Bianca wanting to play with my older sibling, but they wouldn't let me because they, like Finn, thought I would ruin everything. Then I got a younger sibling, and I became Finn as they wanted to play with me, and I wouldn't let them because they wouldn't play the way I wanted to. I highly recommend watching the cinemawins video on how great it is.

The first film initially felt like it was going to be nothing more than a 90 minute Lego advert. And, watching it for the first time, it still seems kind of a like a (though admittedly stunning) 90 minute Lego advert. It's a fun and goofy adventure with lots of excitement, lots of laughs, and a whole load of Lego bricks. The great part was when it pulled the rug out from under you, casting the rest of the film in a different light, and giving the ending some genuine emotion. It goes from good to great. From a film I thought was fun but okay, but to a film I ended up buying. The issue is the second film cannot do that. The first film had you going in without expecting much, and finding greatness. The second film had you going in expecting greatness, and not getting much. (I would've loved an entirely original script by Raphael Bob-Waksberg, but the studio probably wouldn't have gone for that.)

I thought Lucy learned in the first movie that your talented just the way you are, You know special as you are And Lucy accepted Emmet because of who he was heck even told him her real name and then tries to change him? That was completely out of character for Lucy enough grounds to claim it as non-canon

If they had changed the "twist villain" it would have been better. Spiderverse has Miles as Prowler in the sequel but it is believeable. Everything in the movie leads up to it. The way they introduced Rex Dangervest was underwhelming. If it was the main plot point, not the dystopia(real teen behaviour), not the other universe("who expected that"), not the "wedding" (how could batman simply fall), not anything else, just that and that itself then could have made more sense for the movie's plot point. Apart from that I think the movie was great. The incorparation of non-lego materials disappointed me tho.

How the "evil" group that was built to be suspicious was actually good and wanted genuine peace. The coming of age/playing with siblings story was great and was a good next step. I feel like it just gets hated too much when its just as good as the first. Not everything needs to be super bold and new every single time.

Apart from Rex (he really shouldn’t have been a future version of Emmet and his own character entirely) this movie was really good in my opinion, it isn’t as “awesome” as the first by any means, but it still has that same charm that most Lego movies have (except the ninjago movie, that movie can rot into lost media for all I care)

I disagree. I feel like Rex is supposed to represent the brother’s teenage self where his interests become edgier, while Emmet is supposed to represent his inner child. It’s why Emmet stayed the same despite everything else becoming more gritty in the post apocalyptic world. Having them be separate characters could have worked, but it fits better having them be the same character thematically as a major theme is childhood interests vs adolescent interests.

But the plot was fairly predictable and I didn't particularly connect with any of the themes. Not saying it's a bad film, but for me, it was just a film. I can't say the 2nd film is much better, if at all in those departments, but I found it more entertaining if nothing else. Had a bit more stuff going on in it. Didn't really care for the twist villain but I did like the bait and switch with that Queen whatever her name was. It's like the Sing movies. I much more enjoyed the second one than the first one. The first one just felt like watching Got Talent or Idol but with animals. At least the 2nd one had some much better set pieces and amazing animation and design to elevate above it. Of course, when I say I liked something more, I'm not saying it is better.

They were focused on specific characters, and used self-referential stereotypes as a plot device to further push their respective concepts lore forward. Sort've like how 22 jumpstreet and across the spiderverse did the same (also produced by Lord and Miller). Also Not Evil was catchier.
