I am the original owner of a 1983 Seiko Quartz chronograph that survived a house fire with the mechanism just needing a new coil and cleaning. The construction and jeweling of that movement is amazing. It runs as well now as it did new. Not all quartz is the same.

Loved my Tuna when i worked on offshore oil rigs. Seiko and Victorinox make some of the toughest, meanest quartz watches out there that can take a beating day in and day out and still look and function great. Only watch snobs turn up their nose at a good quality quartz movement.

I have a Seiko 7c43 diver, I gravitate toward this watch as my daily more so than my previous daily, the SKX. The 7c43 is similar to the 7c46 movement, both 7 jewels, antimagnetic, high torque serviceable quartz movement. I do prefer a sweep seconds hand, but nothing is easier than picking up my 7c43 and knowing it as the perfect time without having to wind it up every other 42hrs. Just my $0.02 Great vid

As I sit here wearing a mid 80's Lorus quartz diver, I have no issues with quartz movements. That said, I also appreciate my vintage mechanical watches as well. If the watch accomplishes the task for which you wear it (fashion, status, or god forbid... telling time), then that's all that really matters. Love your videos sir.

The helium and nitrogen thing: under high pressure underwater, these gases start getting into the watch. When you come back up into regular pressure, the gases expand. This might damage the crystal or the movement. This watch has prevention and dispersion, which I assume means it is harder for the gases to get in and easier for them to get out.

Great video. You got me curious about the movment in my Marathon TSAR Diver. It’s an ETA FO6 with 3 jewels, all brass, high torque, and serviceable. Quartz has its place. The biggest problem with quartz is that at some point that battery will need to be changed, while an automatic can work well past its recommended service point.
@zm6658
@zm6658 2 жыл бұрын
to detriment of overall component health. the longer past service date you run it, the faster you're running down the service life of its components. like skipping an oil change. one may not hurt, but but several late changes over the life of the engine will significantly reduce its lifespan. also, hello from a fellow TSAR every day wearer!

A sister (or brother?) model, I loved the SBBN033 I owned. Focusing on the quartz movement, some may not understand it, but the second hand ticking is perfect. What many quartz watches fail to that this does is it hits precisely on each tick mark AND there is no play each time it does it. There's just something precisely solid and perfectly ticking that the Tuna's quartz movement does. You really want a high-quality quartz movement in a tool watch over any automatic mechancial watch for ultimate durability and reliability. However, I am surprised you paid $1300 for the watch. I've seen new for around low $900's (on rubber strap) to about $1000 (on the bracelet). And, all Tuna's are essentially JDM, as far as I am aware, and thus unless you live in Japan, the warranty is no good anywhere else anyways so I think one could and should buy new or used for the best price they are willing to pay for new or used.

Thanks for the review. Quartz lover here. The Tuna is nice but too big for me sadly. I don't dive but like a robust tool watch. I use the Citizen F150 movement in my Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Satellite Wave GPS Watch CC3060-10E. It is "only" rated to 200m WR but It has similar new anti-magnetic and shock tech PLUS it knows where you are on the planet and sets the correct time, day and date...automatically. It has the new, high-efficiency Eco-Dive with 7-year power reserve. It tops things off with a sapphire crystal, auto-correcting hands and lume you can read a book by. All in a thinner, much more compact 43.5mm diameter steel case with a clean dial. It's the highest tech timepiece in my collection and my go-to travel watch. (which I actually do).

From my understanding when a watch is subjected to saturation diving. Helium which is one of the gases used, can pass through the seals into the watch. Once the watch leaves the saturation environment the gas will remain inside the watch. If not vented through a pressure release valve. Its possible that the crystal will pop out as a diver ascends to the surface.
@insearchoftheperfectwatch934
@insearchoftheperfectwatch934 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The part that you left out is *how* the Tuna addresses this problem: instead of designing the case with a helium release valve (HRV) that allows the pressure to escape i.e. go back out of the case, they invented a special L-shaped gasket that never allows the helium to leak into the case, in the first place. It's kind f like instead of the gasket being a flat rubber ring, it's a rubber sleeve between the case and the crystal (no case back, on purpose: the movement is inserted from the front of the watch, then the crystal is installed. One less direction for helium to leak in). It's fascinating how engineers in various countries will use different methods to solve the same problem. BTW there are automatic versions of the Tuna, but I believe that the very first one was quartz.

Seiko watches are the best value for money. My father bought me my first Seiko in Bangkok in 1969. It was an automatic world time. Good ETA quartz movements in Longines watches, for example, are typically jeweled 6 or 7 or 8. Japanese quartz is not generally jeweled. Swiss jeweled quartz is the norm. And they are serviceable, if I'm correct. Regarding the Seiko: only Seiko has the capacity to service these, am I right? Just the opening process from the top is something very different.
@8AP1
@8AP1 6 жыл бұрын
The 7C46 quartz movement in this watch is 9 jewels, hand assembled, is high torque with dual rate trimmers, serviceable and fully rebuildable. Many Swiss quartz in this price bracket are throw away movements and there is no comparison in quality whatsoever. This is opened from the caseback like any regular watch- the 1000m tunas on the other hand have no caseback and need the shroud, bezel, crystal, movement removed in that order.

Hi Jory. Talk about a totally tool watch literally this Seiko. I like the Rolex sub but there's too much luxury (and expense) to really not want to take it off before a dive. This Seiko Tuna watch isn't cheap but not out of budget for a serious diver. Mechanical Swiss movements are too elegant for me to dive with. I would wear a Swiss mechanical to the office and use either this or a more budget friendly SKX for sports or diving. All luxury watches have their place unless you are astonishingly rich. Can't blame you for your love of this piece, especially for what it was actually designed for. Love you and Federico's videos. Thanks.
