It seems like TRD is to Toyota as AMG is to Mercedes-Benz. It’s just a name that has lost all of its meaning.

If you are like me, trying to read the TRD available parts in Japanese back early in 2000, then you would appreciate TRD version of Avalon. Imagine yourself buying a regular version of Avalon, then buying all these body kit parts, exhaust pipes and installing it. You wouldn't do it with your financed or leased car. Then you have a bunch of stock parts that you need to sell. In my mind, the fact that you can buy a car with TRD styling is awesome! I wish there would be an option to choose from Tom's, Modellista, WALD and etc. right in the dealership.

Interesting to note, the TRD Camry is actually considerably cheaper than the regular XSE V6. At least in Canada. I think you do lose a couple of internal features, though, but if you weren't really interested in them but still want the V6 its definitely worth it.

Glad you explained all this. But it still churns my butter that they badge these vehicles up to jack the price up and not impress me with any real performance upgrade. The trucks and SUV, TRD means something and is def. a noticeable improvement over a standard SR5 model. But in everything else.. it is sad that you are paying so much for so little improvement(if any)over standard trims.

I honestly like the mid and late 00s Avalon’s better. But I’m not who they are trying to get to buy it.

Other than Hellcat does any of the Performance sounding names like sport for example mean much other than cosmetics anymore? I like the idea of everything having the option of a Performance version for those that want it. And I'm not even saying it should be something track worthy. But it should be measurable better at something besides cosmetics and handling than the non performance version. As an example I think Sport should be abit faster on the top end than the reguler version. Not always by a huge amount,but maybe an extra 20 mph. I don't guess that's asking to much. If somebody has a justifiable reason as to why that's to much feel free to explain in a civil way. A towing package should safely handle more weight. I'm having trouble deciding how much more. Probably should depend on the vehicle class. Off Road should be more ground clearance and the ability to go farther off the beaten path than the reguler AWD version. I can even see having an off road Pro version for hard core off roading. I think folks can get what I'm trying to say. Maybe somebody else has some ideas. Also I doubt that the watering down is purely a Toyota thing. I suspect most of them do it.

They've just proven buy slapping "TRD" on everything that they make that "TRD" really does stand for "TURD".

It has all season tires !! Those aren’t performance tires , no cold air intake either ! All show no go !!

No extra power over a stock Avalon and that's the problem. This feels like a dishonest attempt to make a performance version of the Avalon.

All I could afford was a TUNDRA TRD OFF ROAD...my Tacoma is a TRD SPORT...needed a change..went with OFF ROAD. Hope my Tundra will be as good or better than my Taco. As for this car and any car...cars are useless for me.

TRD is nothing more than an appearance package with a choice in tires. The tacoma TRD Sport and OR aren't anything special over the SR5. Very disappointing considering that it's an acronym for Toyota RACING development. I own a TRD Sport and there is nothing about that truck that even hints at racing. Such a farce.

Price keeps going up while quality keeps going down. The only things new cars have going for them is gadgets and fuel economy. But when you take into account the original cost is the long term fuel savings actually going to you or the manufacturers? Manufacturers no longer build cars you pass down 2 3 or 4 generations but charge like it will last a lifetime. Thanks planned obsolescence.
