In this tutorial we'll explore what makes a chord progression truly beautiful on the piano. Using a 16 measure chord sequence as an example, we'll delve into the harmonic principles and musical techniques that give this progression its special emotional impact.
We’ll go through six harmonic techniques that make this chord progression really effective - including techniques that use seemingly simple musical effects to make a big impact on the chord progression as a whole.
The basic music theory principle here is that a beautiful chord progression isn't just about the individual chords - it's about how they interact and flow together. So we'll spend some time talking about the overall harmonic structure of the progression, including concepts like chord function and modulation. We'll also touch on other aspects of harmony, like non-diatonic chords and pedal tones, and how they can be used to create musical drama and interest.
Throughout the tutorial, we'll be playing the chords on the piano, demonstrating how the different techniques and concepts sound in practice. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced pianist, you'll be able to follow along and learn something new about creating beautiful chord progressions.
So if you're interested in piano chords, harmony, and making beautiful music, be sure to check out this tutorial!

The style is very much Elton John - the kind of "rolling" approach he uses is right in there. The chords too: lots of Lydian IIs!

Yes, very much so, Dafydd - his "rolling" style (as he calls it) has played a really important role in building the vocabulary of pop piano over the past half century. A really big influence is church music, actually - you can heard loads of hymnal techniques in the suspensions. There's a lovely quote from him about songwriting: "when in doubt, I write a hymn!"

Most people seem to imagine me as a kind of raffish, floppy-haired, square-jawed mashup of Hugh Grant, Colin Firth and Daniel Craig. AND THEY'RE RIGHT! OK, maybe apart from the floppy hair
