Pale white skin was the signature look for the upper class in the Elizabethan era and Queen Elizabeth I's makeup was perhaps one of the most iconic examples. But what was IN all that caked on makeup? Turns out, there was quite a cost for that noble, porcelain skin as the makeup contained lead. The price for beauty? Slowly poisoning yourself. Yikes.

Fun Fact: Women keeping their skin looking as pale as possible was fashionable for hundreds of years. It was a symbol of high status, that one was wealthy enough to not have to do hard labor in the sun. In the Post WW1 era of the 1920's, Coco Chanel became an international celebrity. She drastically changed women's fashions to more practical, comfortable, and sporty clothing. Everybody wanted to know what she was doing next. Once she was on a cruise and fell asleep on a deck chair on her yacht, and got a horrible sunburn. By the time her trip was over, her sunburn had turned into a golden tan. Because everybody was always watching what she was doing, people began to imitate her and intentionally tan themselves by laying out in the sun. And hence, the old fashioned pale white skin standard was shattered forever.

Also in South and East Asia the beauty standard of having fair skin is incredibly toxic to adolescents. Their worth is dictated by their appearance. Skin whitening creams and treatments are advertised a lot. And also in Eastern Asia, wrinkles are a big no-no. Asians from Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia etc… work abroad for richer families (eg in the Arabian Peninsula) as maids/servants.

The Elizabethan age is verily known as the golden age of British history from after death of K. Henry VIII, her father, who had no male heirs (for succession). Her life was full of struggles, from Mary Queen of Scots and the Roman Catholics. She mastered the situation both within her country as well as abroad. In order to look free from ailments, she depended much on her looks.

Paté, and "pate" are two separate things. One you spread on crackers, if you really want to eat fattened goose liver. The other, with a silent "e" and a long "ā," one syllable, is another word for "head." Elizabeth didn't have a paté.

She created the beauty standards. The white makeup had been used in the classes for years because she was a beautiful, fair skinned redhead. After she had smallpox, she had to use the same tricks to achieve the look. Despite what Hollywood likes to make us think, lead makeup was surprisingly natural looking, so would have been a preferable go to. White lead does not actually absorb well through skin, so any poisoning would have been through somehow ingesting it, or if it was a particularly strong batch. I don't know. Food for thought.

ethereal intoxicated canary Yeah, hating on the virgin like we’re back in the 60’s and if you weren’t sexually promiscuous you were made fun of and called a prude. For a generation that brags about sexual freedom they sure bullied each other into sex a lot 😒
@earthquakeerika
@earthquakeerika 5 жыл бұрын
Mrs LoveyDove I’ve never seen or heard of anyone being bullied for being a virgin or a prude. I have, however, seen countless females demonized and shamed as whores, sluts, loose, easy, and just generally being taught that we are nasty and dirty for having sex. I was taught to hate my body from a very young age, to uphold virginity as the ultimate indication of VALUE for a woman’s life, and when my mom found out that i had sex she spat on me and told me that i was disgusting and “used,” and that I would never be able to find a husband because without my virginity I was worthless and no man would want me. Idk what world you’re living in, but promiscuity isn’t encouraged for women, it’s not “cool,” and virginity is certainly NOT shamed. Also, there is a whole grey area between virginity and promiscuity that you’ve conveniently erased. Having sex once, aka not being a virgin, does not equate to promiscuity. Sex is natural and beautiful and sacred, and making love to someone is perfectly healthy and normal. Stop perpetuating the belief that we are either virgins or sluts. Sex is a basic biological function required for life to exist, not something that ranks or determines your worth, value, “coolness,” or acceptability. It has zero bearing on who you are as a person. Thanks for coming to my ted talk 🤓
@kiralong2246
@kiralong2246 5 жыл бұрын
Erika Baumann in the past few years a large majority of people have been losing their virginities at an earlier age and there isn’t a lot of cases of people waiting, etc. with the majority of people having sex, those who choose to wait or just haven’t done so yet, there is some people being called prudes and etc for not getting laid. i was one that waited until i was with the right person and i can’t remember being called anything in high school but i didn’t really have a lot of friends or talk to a lot of people. slut shaming definitely isn’t gone, and might be at its worst so far. however i don’t think there really is a whole lot of people that stay virgins for such long nowadays so it’s kinda shifted from slut shaming to prude shaming but they’re both still very alive. it’s not perpetuating a belief, that’s just how things are nowadays. it’s different in every area so maybe around you it doesn’t happen much but it could be different for other areas. either way i agree that it shouldn’t be something to look down on others for having done it or not
