Here in England I use a 40% shade cloth between the months of June and September, when UV levels are high. My containerised tropicals seem to fare better under the shadecloth during the height of summer. This year I purchased sapodilla and white sapote from the subtropical Canary Islands, Spain. I was surprised to see signs of sun scorch after exposure to just a few hours of direct June sun here in England. Surprised because I would assume that the sun's UV at a more southerly latitude (i.e. the Canary Islands, where the plant nursery is based) is a lot stronger than in England, which is a temperate maritime climate of a northerly latitude. My containerised opuntia (prickly pear) has slight fading on the face of the pads exposed to the sun. Again, I find this surprising, as opuntias are used to the strong sun in the hot and arid regions of the US. The sun in England is weak by comparison.

5:12 You might consider including your links such as facebook, instagram, and other links you want in each video description, just copy and paste standard links and info, at the end of each description you write so people can check them out? Almost like a business letterhead on a company email

I worked on a huge grow north of the rim. I learned our hoop houses had 80%. It was essential to have airflow through the canopy or heat stress was very difficult to overcome. Adding silica seemed to help with some of the stress but it’s not a miracle worker.

I've been considering 30% to 40% shade for plants but have also thought 40% could be too much shade. Thanks for your advice.

I use 80% and I still get leaves that burn. Used 60% before and it was burning everything around May. I am container growing and they range from 6 mos to 4 years, water everyday in the Summer time. I get growth especially on sugar apples, longans, mangoes, and jaboticaba. I get growth, but I also get burnt and damage leaves.

where do you live? I'm in San Fernando Valley of LA and I get the same. Although I don't think higher than 60% will do because not enough light comes through.

ZONE MATTERS!!!! Remember which Zone you are in matters the percentage. Im in zone 9 and it gets super hot and dry some days. Im considering 55% but im not sure if that is to shady 😅 Trial an error. Im sure Amazon will exchange it.

Shamus where do you get your shade fabric? link? And you live in Az! I'm in San Fernando Valley of LA, summers are 95-110F. With 60% shade cloth from Amazon, My tomato plants are still stressing so bad, turning yellow and brown, and also getting eaten by grasshoppers who love my shade.

A shade net greenhouse is way better than a plastic greenhouse. Some of the advantages of a shade house include being cheaper, being more durable, being more effective in summer, being safer to farm workers as it has great ventilation. Its also easier to build or repair. For most horticultural crops such s tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, green vegetables, runner beans, strawberries and bell peppers, a 40% white shade cloth is the best.

What % of shade fabric do you recommend for hydrangeas (big leaf / macrophylla) ? It seems to get burnt by afternoon sun. The plants are on raised bed. Located in Seattle area
@flutterby.2222 жыл бұрын
Would 70% be ok if it's not shading for the whole day? My (young white sapote) tree is still getting an hour or two of (Arizona) sun in the morning and late afternoon. I'm using some aluminium shade across a portion of my backyard to help with cooling for both plants and people. I plan to add more that would intermittently shade other trees and plants as well.

I want to use 47% shade cloth here in north Texas, to be precise Fort Worth Texas. I want to use it so the water won’t evaporate and so the plants I grow won’t get leaf burn in the summer. It almost gets up to 120 here some days, is 47% enough or do I go up to 50% ?

I’m in Asheville with a 12T x16W Crimson Queen maple that has been in the ground for 60 years. Recently it lost its shade on one side because a large limb of an adjacent dogwood which is in decline broke off. I am going to replace the dogwood eventually but in the meantime the maple will scorch every summer if I don’t create something to shade it. The problem is not direct overhead sun, because it is still shaded by another tree on the top and left side. Do you have advice about how I can make a structure to shade it until a replacement tree gets big enough to shade it?

Beautiful trees, I want to get a loquat, I noticed on your site it’s listed as good for container and the not good for container? I need it to be in a container for at least a year or two, but really want one ready to fruit. Is that ok here in Mesa AZ?

Yes; 90-100% shade cloth is too much/incorrect. In a recent video you recommend 70% for a loquat (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oN9nlrVl27rOeYU.html) yet in this video you recommend 50-60% for loquats. My in ground young loquat has grown nicely with 80% shade cloth this Summer. It suffered leaf scorch with anything less in years past.

Today I want to grow medical marijuana in my back yard and I need a shade cloth that my neighbor could not see through from her upstairs wind. I want as much light from the sun as possible but the law requires the plants are not visible to the public. What do you recommend?
